good afternoon, everyone. snow flying this morning in washington state, as that big system arrives onshore. now it is moving our way. this is the news. thanks for joining us. i'm britt moreno. but before the snow, we have already hit another record high for the temperature on this day.

we have skipped autumn. >> that's right. and we're going from summertime today straight into winter tomorrow. no autumn in between. right now here in downtown denver we have 74 with partly cloudy skies. the only thermometer that matters is the one at dia and that's one of the warmest spots around now, 78 out there at the airport. the record for today previously was 77. we have broken a 75-year old record with 78 we're still climbing. i think we could reach 80 officially for today. most neighborhoods lower to middle 70s. it's warm for november everywhere, including in the mountains. avon already up to 66. steamboat at 64. salida at 58. everything is about to change for everybody as this cold front that's right here near salt lake city makes its way toward us. 40-degree temperature drop

colorado high country. this won't be a major storm for the mountains, but 5 to 10 niches in the flattops -- inches in the flat stop. 4to 8 inches in summit county. mountain valleys maybe an inch or two there. denver and front range, not much, if any, accumulating snowfall. up to an inch maybe on grassy surfaces. we'll talk about the change for tomorrow friday and the weekend, full forecast is coming up. thank you. one person has died after a fire at a house in aurora this morning. it started after 7:30. aurora fire actually tweeted out this video and our jennifer brice is on the scene. jennifer, i understand you first heard about all this from the fire department. >> reporter: yeah, that's right. when we got out here things

this home. firefighters confirm one person has died, four others were taken to the hospital with one being in critical condition. you can see how bad this fire is by looking at the cars and the truck in the driveway. also we're going to pan up to the roof on this house. that is sagging, which means it is not safe for firefighters to go inside. the smoke was incredibly thick, dark and difficult to see through. firefighters say one home where they believe the fire began was engulfed in flames by the time around 7:30 a.m. by 8:00 a.m. i'm told the crews were still out here fighting those flames. firefighters also say it was so involved and hot that the flames spread to neighboring homes. both the homes to the left and right are also affected. >> main structure is too unsafe, so we're spraying water from the outside. until we get the fire out we can't really get going on the

>> reporter: people tell me there was a neighbor helping to rescue people inside that home that you were just looking at as firefighters came out here and arrived. clearly a tragic situation. we confirmed one person has died. four others taken to the hospital and of those four, one is in critical condition. live in aurora, jennifer brice, cbs4 news. >> very sad for that neighborhood. jennifer, thank you so much. state patrol is investigating a car fire that we showed you during it's possible the car here engulfed in flames hit a deer and that is what sparked the fire. the case of teenage girls accused of making threats against mountain vista high school is back before a judge today. those girls have been in custody since december. our jamie leary is at the douglas county justice center, and jamie, i understand only one of those girls was in court today. >> reporter: yeah, both being

but attending hearings separately. at one point the attorney tried to distance brooke from sienna johnson. the outcome of this hearing could very likely be one of the most significant outcomes of this case. since they were hired, higgins' attorneys have been trying to get her case sent back to sentence would be less severe. she would be given the chance eventually to live a normal life. she and her friend johnson were 16 when they were arrested last september. both are being charged as adults. the two allegedly had written out plans to kill students and staff at mountain vista high school. the only reason authorities found out was because somebody tipped them off. higgins' attorneys argued this is a thought crime at best. because of the sensitive

it has been closed to the public. there's a total of four days slated for this hearing. it was supposed to start in mid- december, but because of scheduling conflicts with one of the witnesses they started day one today. and after today it will continue as scheduled again in mid-december. this has been a really, really long process. both girls are still in custody nearly a year later. each facing a million dollar bond to get bailed out. parents have been attending these hearings every single one of them. it'sin but we'll continue to follow it. live from douglas county courthouse, jamie leary, cbs4 news. thank you. we are learning how law enforcement offices in douglas county are working with domestic violence advocates to protect even more victims. the idea here is to try and get officers to prevent deaths

lethality assessment. >> what we are learning is it becomes very impactful for a police officer to sit with a victim of domestic violence and tell them that you are in a high danger of being killed by your domestic partner. it's impactful and a powerful statement to hear from law enforcement. >> if a victim is determined to be at that high risk, officers immediately get them in touch with resources and a place. last year douglas county had 800 calls related to domestic violence. new information about a deadly shooting at the oklahoma city airport. police say lloyd bowie was a former southwest airlines employee and likely targeted a southwest airlines employee. police say he shot and killed michael winchester. investigators say he was lying in wait and shot and killed winchester with a suspected rifle. they say it's not clear if he in fact had planned to shoot

went to the airport. the shooting they say could be in retaliation for something that caused his resignation in 2015. organized process, that is how president-elect trump is describing the transition process. vice president-elect mike pence ordered the removal of all lobbyists. >> >> reporter: president-elect donald trump's children and members of his transition team returned to trump tower this morning to fill key cabinet positions and craft an agenda. former goldman sachs partner is said said to be front-runner for treasury secretary. >> taxes, regulatory trade and

>> reporter: trump tweeted this morning, totally wrong on transition. it is going so smoothly. the tweet comes after mike pence removed all lobbyists from the team. >> he's putting together his team. it's never easy to do, particularly when you're coming in not having been in government, so let's give him some space to do that. >> reporter: the president- elect is raising eyebrows after his team told his press pool he was in for the night. instead he went to dinner >> reporter: the white house correspondent's association issued a statement saying reporters are in place to cover the president-elect and it's critical they be allowed to do their jobs. many businesses took down the gold letters of trump tower names after tenants petitioned the removal. new york city's mayor met with the president-elect this

relationship. but the known liberal said he felt it was important to deliver a message to mr. trump. >> my job is to make crystal clear what's happening out there in this city. and i said on wednesday, even though i have very real differences with the president- elect, he is a new yorker. i do think he loves this city. but i thought it was very important for him to hear what people are feeling and very important for him to hear what our experience has been. for example and frisk. getting away from that policy made us safer. or for him to know we have 900 muslim american nypd members. that's not lecturing, that's giving perspective. >> he described the meeting as respectful and full of give and take. why the faa is looking at ways to keep drones out of the air space around airports, including here in denver.

white drone. >> reporter: since dia started tracking drones back in 2015, there have been 13 reports in just one year. on tuesday, the faa and homeland security started testing new technologies for de teching unmanned airport near airports. >> what they're trying to do is make it to where if there's an accident caused because of a drone they can find out who it belonged to. >> reporter: last week the point man on drones for the faa said they would be in denver trying to find a way to near airports. >> the game plan is to test out new equipment. i have a feeling most of it will be radar-style. >> reporter: another way is called geofencing. >> it is almost going to put a fence around them and it would make a huge almost like a force field. it would put a signal to disable it and lower it down,

person is flying it and what it's registered to. >> reporter: the problem is the availability of drones to the public is outpacing how the government can control and keep them safe. jeff todd, cbs4 news. ashton is joining us now. i want to get to the snow, but firstly let's talk about this record we have broken. tell me when it was set. >> before we get to winter weather tomorrow, summer-like weather today. 75 years ago on this date, that's the warmest we've ever been on the 16th of november. the last 20 minutes, dia just climbed to 78. and it's climbing. we could hit 80 at dia this afternoon. >> wow. >> remarkable for this time of year. everything is about to change. downtown denver we have 74 degrees. it's not quite as warm here as it is out at the airport. of course, 1941, there was no dia. had the record location not moved, yeah, wouldn't be a

79 in greeley. here are the high temperatures. going to climb a couple more degrees. 80 denver. 80 in boulder. southeast part of the state well into the 80s. most mountain towns in the 50s or 60s for high temperatures this afternoon. there is a red flag warning for the southeast part of the state. gusty winds, dry soil, and of course warm temperatures bad combination for fires. we've got the red flag warning that goes through this evening. also winter storm wa this includes the aspen area, telluride towards steamboat springs. 5to 10 inches in the blue area. 1to 3 mountain valleys. east of vail pass, including summited county and winter park, accumulating snowfall there, because of this cold front that has now made its way past salt lake city. 40-degree temperature drop with this front. you can see it as it passes over colorado. move over denver around 3:00 in

builds back in. sunshine returns on friday. it will be cold friday and saturday. but it will be sunny and dry. a quick shot of precipitation. this is one of the down sides of this system. it's moving so quickly we're never going to get the opportunity to see a ton of in the mountains -- snow in the mountains. noon tomorrow still snow in the mountains. maybe a few could rain showers for denver and front range tomorrow morning. as we go through time, some of e transition into snowflakes for denver and on the plains. just not going to be much. moisture is a problem with this system. it's just moving so quickly. here's the forecast in terms of snow. from aorta's to an inch -- a trace to an inch tomorrow, mainly on grassy surfaces. roads will be so warm, tough to see accumulation. up to 2 inches on the northern plains. not a big storm system. 5to 10 around the flattops.

already broke the record. tomorrow cold rain, switching over to light snow. again, there's just not going to be much precipitation. britt, really the bigger impact from this storm is going to be the drop in temperatures. 42 tomorrow. that will happen early in the day. 30s tomorrow afternoon. friday we wake up with 19 degrees and only up to 40. for the weekend, high temperatures climbing back into the 50s and 60s. it will be warmer by sunday. >> we should be conditioned to the cold this time of year. >> we should be, we stay warm. prescription prices on some drugs are skyrocketing and people are finding them cheaper on web sites that claim they're canadian. rick salinger takes a look at whether this is an option you should choose. >> reporter: with prices on the upbeat, and drugs so high, parents joke -- >> it's cheaper to buy a ticket to europe and fly there to get your epipens than buy them in
