westbound lanes. you will see a lot of cars coming through backed ill as far as evergreen and beyond waiting for them to get things back open. traffic is moving. but, they are not going to be going very far, because it is closed at vail pass. we are having problems down that way. here is video of what things look like. this all started up here at least in the mountains where the conditions started getting pretty bad. just before noon today. this is where we started seeing jackknife trucks the chain and traction laws are in place right now. but a lot of folks are just not obeying the laws. >> they said about a foot. and, i think it will be. and it is getting used to little slip and slide. but, uh, i think, um, it is like anything i guess. it is just a little change of driving. >> reporter: depending on where you are standing we are seeing different snow levels right here. this is all built up in the

and, the winds have kind of changed directions up here. they will have their work cut out for them. we have seen all sorts of wrecks on the way toward silverthorne. we are live at the eisenhower tunnel, matt kroschel, cbs4 mountain news room. >> thanks matt. we are keeping an eye on the storm in douglas county as well. meteorologist chris spears is live in lone tree and chris, the snow is really coming where you are. >> reporter: it is. if you are a meteorologist in colorado, you have to be prepared to be humble in all storms. this one is certainly overperforming. storms across the rockies get out onto the open planes with no obstacles and i can can wrap up like a top and slam us with wind and snow. interstate 45. we have been out here now about two hours.

almost five degrees. almost creating flash freeze type scenarios where the pavement, you can see the parking lot here suddenly becomes very icy and snow packed and i did walk over and check i-25. there's absolutely a lot of snow between those lanes. 24 degrees here at my location and lauren whitney, i just saw the storm prediction center has outlined northeast colorado for a band of heavy snow over the next six hours. they are saying one inch per hour >> and that storm actually is starting to get a bit more intense out on the eastern plainsment they are filling in quite a bit more. earlier, there was some rain and thunderstorms out that direction. and now, that is changing over into snow. you can still see in parts of the eastern plains as you head down to the southeast, it is still on the rainy side as temperatures are warmer that direction. we will start zooming into the denver area. we have nice moderate rainfall. downtown, snowfall, i should say. downtown, not too bad. but chris spears south of town,

snowfall. so around town, moderate. up north, some heavier snowfall all the way to fort collins. the nunn area, boulder has seen a lot of snow as well. sticking to some areas. decker and conifer, parts of the south foothills, we have decent snowfalls a well. out on the eastern plains, all of this is shifting out in are the direction it could stick around several more hours probably until about midnight. western slopes still a little action out here as well. from grand juti way through coleburn and montrose as well. temperatures have significantly dropped as well with the front and system moving through. we are 40 degrees cooler in boulder and dia, 28 degrees cooler at burlington. headed to the high country, 32 degrees different craig and steam boat. so, we will talk about our cold night coming up ahead. when the snow wraps up and the next chance of snow coming up in a few moments, for now, we will send it back to you guys. >> thanks lauren. we have an update on a

the life of a mother. cbs4 has now learned that mother died when flames burned through her home wednesday morning. a family of seven lived there. the woman's son is suffering life threatening injuries because he tried to rescue his mom. she was in the shower. they were doing chest compressions on him. all i could think was >> the fire department is still investigating what started that fire. now, new information on the moratorium on oil and gas in boulder has been extended by the county commissioners through the end of january. the federal government says it is canceling 25 oil and gas leases in western colorado. >> there were plans to drill in the thompson divide. that is just south of glenwood

[ laughter ] >> reporter: yeah, so much damage, this mama bear caused a huge mess when she broke into an suv, similar to this one, and got stuck inside leaving her little cubs outside. but, colorado parks and wildlife says this snow should help them head into hibernation, but they say, we are not out of the woods just yet. now, friends of the steamboat pilot caught the bear on camera. she got stuck inside the suv

the driver's door and sneaking inside. she did not make a graceful exit destroying the suv. he tried to get out. the mama bear escaped to safety after a witness opened the door. parks and wildlife says it is not uncommon for bears to be active this late in the year. >> bears can come in and out of hibernation if we have warm days. they will poke their heads out and look for food. we have to do right by our bear to bear proof along the foothills of colorado. >> reporter: now, parks and wildlife says bears getting food out of vehicles. they remind you not to leave any trash or food inside your car and if you are a fan of air fresheners, they will go after those as welshing even if your car is locked. reporting live, andrea flores, cbs4 news. >> thank you. that bear getting one last hurrah before hibernation. >> and that should come soon. we are so tired of talking record highs. now we have snow. 9:00 in the morning you can see

here. some of it was rain to the south. a little lightning. now it blankets the northeast with the snow. and it continues to go at this hour, you can see the rain mixed with snow as the pink shaded area. we have snow all around the metro. it continues until about news time tonight. there is the cold air that came along with it. gave us the snow. it is slowly moving out of here, but it did drop snow. let's go to lauren in colorado weather center. some areas got a little more. >> some areas did. this system accumulated a little more in the south side of denver. so checking in with the weather watchers. shannon in steamboat reporting two inches for us. checking in with some others, debbie reporting 4.1 inches in highlands ranch. mark russell in walden, almost four inches.

looking at the futurecast, what we are expecting the cold front cruises on through. we are going to see this clear out overnight tonight. so woman so areas in the eastern plains, you may linger a little longer but the rest of us start to clear out. by midnight tonight, most of it has been wrapped up and we start to see skies clear. so it is going to get a little chilly around here. high country, there may be a few clouds to start the day. but ed, there is plenty of winter some areas are not done yet. >> we have one in the northwest, one in the southwest. the warning and the advisory until midnight tonight. they will stack up to about a foot of snow before all is said and done. telluride very happy getting some snow today. and take a look at this. this is hunter, our junior weather watcher with his little brother. he is out with the official weather watcher measuring stick. he is checking out the snow amounts. he lives in northglen. as we look at the temperatures we had today, 39.

afternoon. this is how the temperature dropped during the day. 43 down up to. 51 normal. 76 the record. 27 and 26 right now. 88% humidity with a rising barometerment lows tonight, teens, 20 over the eastern plains. single digits and teens for the high country. out west, teens 20s . and tomorrow, 30s and 40s. and that is statewide. so it is going to be chilly. but there is a warmup on the way. you will see it in the five day forecast. with the clearing skies, cold, 20 and 18 for the overnight lows. then, tomorrow, we will see 40s , but sunshine, that will make it feel a little better and the next several days we will take a look at warmer weather saturday. more of the same monday, the next system comes in tuesday. but, not with the cold weather. but, it does have a little moisture. maybe rain showers instead and in the 50s. >> nice to see the classic football weather saturday.

>> live, from colorado's news channel, this is cbs4 news at 6:30. >> it was a difficult drive all day along i-70 in the high country. our mountain news room captured this video of snow packed roads. they even drove past a jackknifed semi. denver national airport say theres is no problem getting out to the airport.

delays because of deicing and none of the united flights coming to denver are on time. some are delayed by several hours. the ski resorts are happy to see all the snow. look at the video from ski stone, the snow has arrived just in time for thanksgiving. our meteorologist chris spears is tracking the storm from the mobile weather lab in lone tree. chris, i can not believe that snow is around you. >> reporter: it has been coming down like this, britt, for a couple of hours as the low pressure winds up. we are at i-25 and lincoln. if you have friends or family coming southbound on i-25 and douglas county, they are probably right behind me siting in slow and go stop and do traffic. the roads have deteriorated as the snow has picked up. the storm we have been tracking

it has arrived and crossed over the rocky mountains and it is now sitting out here on the east central plains of colorado and straddling the southwest side of kansas. that low as it spins up and intensifies it is drawing warm rich moist air out of the gulf of mexico. cold air straight out of canada and is really invigorating this low pressure system. it is a little stronger than we anticipated as it starts to pull off to the northeast, it will bend our winds from the that should shut the snowfall off here along the front range. northeast colorado has a while to go. they could get one inch per hour of snowfall rate as the storm system winds up. >> it is already intensifying now on the eastern plains. they filled in much, much more than they were earlier. starting to clear a bit more. off to the west, the clouds are clearing more. and temperatures are going to plummet in that area. so take a look at the eastern plains. once you leave town, headed toward the airport, out toward
