>> our first snow of the season brings major transportation issues tonight. drivers found themselves stuck for hours on i-25 in douglas county. one of those vehicles our mobile weather lab. chris spears has an update shortly. >> dia the other big problem spot. nearly every united airlines flight has been canceled or delayed. some several hours because of deicing problems. passengers have been frustrated since about and our karen morfitt will have the latest. first, an update on the storm from lauren whitney. has it finally left the state? >> it has not left the state. we have plenty of snow in the eastern plains but it has cleared from some areas. western slope, a few flurries, skys are clearing and it is very cold out that way. as we head toward the denver area, not much for us left in the city. we do still have cloudy skies but a little bit of clearing on the east side of town. in the foothills, light snowfall, snow in the high

along the northern part of i- 25. fort collins, platteville. and on the south side of town, we have snow there in some spots near larkspur. but, the eastern plains, this is where we have a little more action out near leader, fort morgan, headed out to holy hook. that is where we have heavier snowfall. we are going to start to clear as we head toward the later evening idledale with 6.6. just over five-and-a-half. got about four inches of snow. it is noticeably significantly cooler outside. 20 degrees cooler in denver than this time yesterday. it stopped snowing a little bit, but it is still cold where you are at chris christian. >> chris spears. >> reporter: yeah, we have a few flurries here.

that really wreaked havoc on the roads. behind me, i-25, good news. here at ridge gate parkway, things have opened back up. a look at this video. this was just under an hour ago, it was a complete parking lot southbound headed from ridge gate to castle pines. it took one hour and ten minutes to make the small two to three mile trip. it was just a very tough time. back out here live, 25 degrees. we are hearing of some issues in douglas county in the town area. there have been a few rescues at i-70 and i-25. people taken to warmer places when they had to abandon their vehicle. jim benemann, i have two resources coming up for you, ed and lauren. they will break down how low the temperature will go and preview the weekend. thanksgiving is next week. big travel time. right now, anger an frustration at the airport. this picture is from inside a

the tarmac. the passenger writing you know united has left you on the tarmac a long time. you can see the windows coated with snow and ice. our karen morfitt out at dia. karen, united says it simply cannot deice the planes fast enough. >> reporter: exactly jim, that has created quite the mess for their passengers. it seems to be getting back on track tonight. but take a look at the information board. some of the flights that have not been canceled are delayed. and not by a few minutes. this fargo flight was set for 7:50, now scheduled after 1:00 in the morning. that is what we have seen all evening. take a look at this video from a passenger inside the concourse. you can see a number of people lined up at the united customer service desk trying to get answers from those agents agents or maybe new flights. the extended delays are because of deicing and that some of the equipment operated by their

those deicing issues cause several incoming flights to come for a gate to open causing some passengers to wait for hours on the tarmac causing a number of cancellations for those threing to leave dia. >> that was the most painful part. feeling that we have landed. there shouldn't be really anything delaying us. and yet, it was the most trapped i felt coming on the plane in quite a long time. because, we are, you know, a few hundred feet from walking off the plane. >> the landing was okay. it was a was okay. then the pilot comes on, we had been waiting ten minutes and he told us all the gates were taken up and we had to wait. >> so we originally thought it was a delay from a previous flight. then we found out it was canceled so i assumed the snow. but we don't know overall. >> reporter: now, a spokesperson for united couldn't say exactly how many of their flights were impacted but they did say that they are

possible. for now, live at dia, karen morfitt, cbs4 news. >> thank you karen. while the snow has been great news for our ski resorts, i-70 was a disaster for drivers. crashes closed the road between georgetown and silverthorne. then a pileup brought traffic to a standstill at evergreen. stan bush live along the interstate 4. and what a mess today. >> reporter: no kidding karen. and two people were injured in that major pileup. we ha the foothills hit vigorously by teams of plows trying to clear the roadway. they are usually followed by a long line of cars. it has been a long day up here. and it is going to be a longer night. traffic through the mountains was standing still when the heaviest snow blew in. it took the most experienced high country drivers by surprise. and then, there was brenda carmona who flew in today from los angeles.

heavy duty suv. >> for some reason, we are the only car that is still moving. most cars are just stuck. the wheels are turning. i asked her what is happening. what is going on. i think they can't move. >> reporter: when traffic rolled, it looked a lot like this. a 20 car pile up on floyd hill that shut down i-70 for hours. alternate routes add more time to even the shortest drives and plenty of white knuckle moments throughout the day. >> it is not easy no matter what you you have to watch out for the other people out there. and make sure everything is under control. >> reporter: the snow has passed in this area, now, the big story is the freezing temperatures. and cdot will be working all night long to ensure that by the morning this roadway is not coated in ice. we are live in morrison, stan bush, cbs4 news. >> thank you stan. the road conditions could be a mess in the morning with the cold temperatures overnight. lauren is back with ed greene with the full forecast coming up in ten minutes.

cbs4 has learned a mother died when the flames raced through her home yesterday morning. a family of seven lived there. the woman's son suffered life threatening injuries. trying to rescue her from the flames. >> he was trying to bang on the door to get mom. she was in the shower. the paramedics were looking on him frantically trying to do chest compressions. and ... all i could do is sit there thinking oh god, oh god, please help this person. >> just an fire department still determining what started that fire. a man is suing the police department claiming he was attacked by officers having a diabetic episode behind the wheel and the department was having issues. our jeff todd has been looking into this case. the justice department might also be interested. >> reporter: yeah, jim. police reports say this driver was erratic and forcing other cars off of the road, but that driver says that his blood

low. instead of police getting him medical attention, they beat him, pepper sprayed him, and tazed him. it was two years ago when police found this car swerving along tower road near 120th. >> they admit, like, we just went up there. knocked on the window. pulled him out of the car to the ground. boom. started hitting him in the leg. >> reporter: this is allegedly a wound from being hit with a baton. this is marks from where he was tazed. >> they just went straight to force >> reporter: karl is still in therapy dealing with the trauma from this event. his attorneys say they want to see this case bring change to commerce city police. >> it is just poor training. as soon as the emts show up, they recognize the guy has a problem. they immediately start talking to him. he explains he, you know, he has diabetes. >> reporter: he faced three charges, all were later dismissed. five officers responded to this reckless driving case and tried

from the department. one was ken lord who shot himself? a hoax. he pled guilty to avoid jail time. >> you can't have dangerous people like that in police uniform. when you have officers doing the wrong thing and the department knows it they should fix it. >> reporter: officials from the city of commerce city told us they have not yet been served with this lawsuit. so, they had no comment. as for this investigation, from the department of justice, the first recommendations have we are expecting those in the next few weeks. we are live in commerce city, jeff todd, cbs4 news. new tonight, the owner of a denver apartment complex is facing criminal charges for exposing residents to asbestos during a renovation. lauren dispirito what happened out there? >> reporter: the problem started in two of the towers on the complex.

contained asbestos. so when a contractor sanded the hallways, that sent the harmful particles airborne. the owner of a den very apartment complex and one of the exec tyes are facing federal charges after asbestos exposure putures dents at risk. in february of 2014, health officials found renovation work at the overlook at mile high caused the hazardous material to be as the residents of nearly 100 units had to be evacuated and moved into hotels. now, according to court documents, the ownership company, wilmax capital management is charged with a felony accused of vie lathing a federal rule by failing to inspect for asbestos. and the executive john tom williams is facing one misdemeanor count for negligence in the case.

client is taking responsibility and plans to plead guilty. earlier this year, the ownership company settled a class action civil lawsuit with 43 people who lived in the apartments at the time of the release. now, for his role, this executive is facing up to one year in prison and up to $100,000 in fines. his attorney said tonight that to date, no one has been sickened as a result. but, tonight, health officials in this state and the city were not able to verify we are live in denver, lauren dispirito, cbs4 news. developing tonight, donald trump reaches out to one of his campaign enemies. >> donald trump is a phony. >> coming up, the role mitt romney could play in the administration. >> plus, the surgeon general takes a new approach to addiction with our country in an opiate crisis. >> the addiction is a chronic disease of the brain. >> and new video of the thief who took everything including

opioid overdose. dr. murphy says addiction has to be treated as a disease. not a character flaw. >> the science tells us clearly the addiction is a chronic disease of the brain. we have to treat wit the same skill as any chronic illness. >> medication and counseling do work. the surgeon general says only one in ten substance abusers is getting the treatment they need. now, that thief in texas who did get away with everything including that kitchen sink, ho heist, family was doing remodeling work after an earlier tornado. the contractor ran to the store for some parts. that is when the guy pulled up and a trailer and stole the kitchen sink. two bathroom sinks and a garbage disposal from the driveway. >> he grabbed it. ran one time from where the cameras could get it on the driveway. the second time, he came and he stayed in the grass area with the kitchen sink and disposal.

are reporting. luke in evergreen, six-and-a- half inches. and from highlands ranch, debbie, 5.3 inches for us. and, in broomfield, susan reporting 4 for us. in steamboat springs, 3.3 inches. and they are firing up the snow guns in that area. looking at the futurecast, skys will clear. even more throughout the rest of the night. by tomorrow morning, early, early hours by the time the morning show starts tomorrow, there may be snow in the high country with a few clouds. here in be very clear and it is going to be very cold tonight as well. then by about 10:00 a.m., meg most everything should be gone. we are in for very chilly temperatures tonight. 14 craig, telluride, down to 8 degrees. 15 for eagle and steamboat. in denver, we will get into the teens, 18 degrees for us tonight. 19 in greeley. 23 in burlington. bring the pets in tonight. make sure everyone is warm and
