thanksgiving week, great to have you with us, this is the news on cbs4. and we have rain and snow inight really is -- britt it really is. rain and snow today and tonight, but the storm system will quickly exit colorado tomorrow. so for those of you who have travel plans late in the day tomorrow or into wednesday, you should be just fine. the main issues are actually tonight into early tomorrow and the bilgest impact in the colorado high country. that's where we expect to have snow-covered roadways and winter driving conditions for sure in the mountains from later today through tonight. fo

we had last week, therefore mainly rain here, break down the timing straight ahead. right now straight over the joel. well, ashton the map's colorful this morning as you head to the western slope. so this is all to the west of vail pass. you get to the east of that and it's pretty good ??9wdrive out there. but gypsum glenwood springs, rifle, debeck return to speeds to the west of debeck. but the pink the possibility of ice and britt it's just icy along i-70. it's right next to the river plus there's nothing underneath it. it's vale ited out there -- elevated out there and it becomes a skating relationship. after a denver elementary school is vandalized with antisemitic graffiti. cbs4's shawn chitnis is reporting on this one and right now police are trying to figure out -- are trying to figure out who's responsible. >> reporter: right britt and they're hoping the security cameras in the area by the school may give them the clue

parents are going to bring students back to school for the first time since this happened over the weekend. someone spraying a swastika on one of the outside doors of the school. take a look at this photo, that was provided to us, that gives us a closer look at at swastika. that was put on the school. and that was before the community came together to clean it up. many of them learned about it on social media when a watch group for the stapleton neighborhood shared that photo. parents of isabella in the community were concerned and wanted to act quickly. they washed away that symbol of hate and then covered the same wall with hearts that had messages of love and hope on there. and one of the parents was telling us that this is a fairly new school. so it was disturbing to see that swastika because it goes against everything this school represents. >> it was horrifying. this is where my kids go to school. this is my community, this is where i live. you know, this is a place that

around tolerance. around justice. >> reporter: now the community willespond again. they are planning a solidarity parade that's going to be organized with the help of the stapleton jewish life center. and that will happen on december 27th. while the police officer was involved in a traffic stop about 8:00 last night. the officer was staken to a hospital where he was treated and released. san bell is an island right near fort myers and another shooting happened in kansas city, missouri. a suburb there, police say an officer was shot during a traffic stop at about 10:45 last night. that officer works for the city of gladstone and is expected to live. the suspect was shot and killed. plus, a suspect involved in an ambush attack on a police

he was kill ld in a shootout with police. the officer in this case was targeted while sitting in his car around 7:30 last night. he was hit twice in the face. >> the officer says he saw the muzzle flashes and felt the glass breaking and his window as the shots came through and struck him in the head. >> the officer was able to get on the radio and call for assistance. officers quickly responded to the scene and transported the sergeant here to the hospital. >> now that officer we understand is in critical stable condition right conducng a tffic to have ?nn,front of -- stop front of ?4

fired a second shot. >> reporter: the 50-year-old officer was rushed to the hospital where he later died. >> most families will be celebrating the holidays. sapd will be burying one of its own because of an ultimate act of cowardice. >> reporter: police say the suspect got abay in a -- away in a black car with tinted windows. the ambush killings of police officers in iowa, texas and louisiana earlier this year. >> this type of senseles violence is unacceptable. >> reporter: texas governor greg abbott released a statement expressing his condolences and also said attack against law enforcement officers will not be tolerated in texas. and must be met with swift justice. marlie hall, cbs news. time now for a check of weather and traffic. and ashton is tracking another round of rain and snow. >> yes indeed. here we go again britt. it was dry but really chilly over the weekend on saturday we warmed up yesterday and we still have that warm air in

range. meanwhile, on the western slope, joel was talking about this earlier. once you get west of vail pass, that's when the precipitation starts. how mild it is. richard our cbs4 weather watcher down in littleton has 51. it's going the stay mostly cloudy at the bus stop and temperatures right around 40 for the kids. so a lot warmer at the bus stop this morning than it was back on frid mor?. talkabout when the precip arrives in denver and have the forecast for thanksgiving straight ahead. right now joel? we are watching that drive up into the high country i was just czeching my e-mail to see red mountain pass there along highway 550 if that had had

46-year-old kevin lyons is facing 12 felony counts including first degree murder. investigators say in april, the lyons shot his wife in their front yard in centennial and then shot two neighbors who tried to help. good samaritan dr. ken atkinson was killed. prosecutors say they are considering seeking the death penalty in this case. sentencing is expected today for a man found guilty in a child prostitution case. 21-year-old stray vaughn la cay malloy was convicted of pimping a 17-year-old runaway in jefferson county. court documents say malloy forced that teenaged girl to have sex with men in exchange for giving the girl a place to live. today president-elect donald trump's back at trump tower in new york city for more transition meetings. this weekend, at his golf course in new jersey he met with self-prominent republicans being considered for top jobs. among them, former rival mitt romney. and retired marine corps

,, t hold on. before you eat it. the company is issuing voltarial recall on different versions of its product because of a possible listeria contamination problem. the fda says the affected products were made before november 8th and they have a best before date through january 23rd of 2017. listeria is nasty and you can have fever and muscleaches and stiffness and abdominal pain. let's move on to something brighter and better to talk about. 5:44 here's ashton with the

you. and it's not quite bright outside yet. but we do see the lights at the top of the dirkham mountain at keystone. you know breckenridge opened over the weekend, they had a successful opening. today eldora will open. they will be the seventh of the 25 ski areas to open this season. then later this week four more are set to open and after a rather grim start to the ski season things are really rapidly changing. for snow in the colorado high country for today tonight and tomorrow. meanwhile, for denver, take a look at over the weekend we went from 45 on saturday to 69 yesterday. today not quite as warm as yesterday. but still far above normal billion 63 -- with 63. then tomorrow as our storm system moves in. we drop to 46. but that's it. just 46. last frill, we never climbed above freezing. so this storm is not nearly as cold as the one last week and therefore for the most part, this is going to be rain for us. wednesday will be dry with temperatures up near 50 and then 40s on the way for thanksgiving. right now we're in the 40s around denver and boulder.

greeley. it's a relatively mild start for a late november morning. mountain areas will be in the 40s later on today. 50s for high atures on the western slope. and that's where we have some rain and snow falling this morning. snow down in the san juans and rain around grand junction over toward rifle and into the western sections of eagle county. our actual storm system is down here between l. a. and las vegas. and since it's coming in from the southwest, this san juan mountains will bear the brunt of this storm that's where the most significant snow amounts will be. 8 to 14 inches for purgatory and telluride. 6 to 12 up along the i-70 corridor west of vail pass and then 5 to 10 inches for the mountains of summit county. winter park up towards oat and granby. not ite that much over around kremmling but some accumulation if we get anything here it's going to be some slush on the grass and that's for the most part going to be tomorrow morning. during the commute. but with precipitation expected

slow go even with fewer cars than normal on the roadways. here's noon today notice snow in the mountains especially down in the san juans and here's 5:00 p.m. that's rain around denver late this afternoon and into the evening hours we expect a few rain showers for the denver boulder and fort collins areas. and then overnight tonight, as colder air tries to come in, it's going to try to change over to snow and that may happen briefly. it's possible we could have a rain/snow mix during the morning commute tomorrow in denver but again, any accumulation would just be some slush mainly on the 46 tomorrow. tomorrow afternoon the sun will be back. and then wednesday sunshine all day and high 50. and then for turkey day we have 46 on there on thursday. joel, just warm enough that if you need to escape the family and go outside for a little bit it should be just fine. not that i would ever do that. >> not my family. >> just saying it will be okay to do that. there you go. hey take a look up into the hire, sometimes you have to get there first and so if you're traveling this morning, just to the west of vail pass, along i- 70, that's where you are going to see you know tougher

road weather index to the north and to the south of i-70. not actually along i-70 itself. but of course that can change quickly and washton warming -- ashton warning us to be careful along 550 as well. making your way out to telluride. here we are to the east of ?qvav pass. ther?s?e along i-70. it's much eri$?drivthugh idaho springs we have some wet roads out there and you can see it's showing up as snow on the road weather index and not causing any delays for folks or tough conditions. across the denver metro area it's a great drive. southbound coming down into minutes drive from thornton to denver. thanks joel. peyton manning retired as a denver bronco but this weekend, he got a chance to put on his colts' jersey again. and he celebrated the tenth anniversary of his first super bowl win. 50 members of that super bowl xli team took part in ha halftime celebration. they were at lucas oil stadium the home of the colts. and peyton manning talked about the honor. >> i really don't miss being on the field because i feel like i kind of left it ??:"alout there but i did it for a long time.

welcome back to the cbs4 morning news. here on this monday morning. live doppler 4000 showing cloud cover state wide and rain and snow falling on colorado's western slope. as we go through time that precipitation will move to the east and arrives in denver this afternoon as rain. not snow. cbs4 weather greenspan down in telluride has 38 and reporting some light snow there at his house near telluride. jeff on the eastern plains not far from the kansas line, he has 47 in burlington. and phil curly in east franktown, 49 looks like phil has something to say. let's see -- you're absolutely right phil. and in fact that 49 you have? that's a normal high temperature in franktown this time of year, we'll check the full planning forecast and including the thanksgiving outlook coming up. right now over to joel.

bit this morning ashton as you're heading out across the denver metro area. take a look from the cdot cameras, this is i-76 and i-270 and of course both directions loading up. we have got a couple more days to get out there and get to work. the good news is you don't have a lot of school traffic a lot of schools already off for the thanksgiving break. up into the high country, a little bit of a different situation once you get west of vail pass, some icy condit especially from springs. the annual champagne cascades were last night.
