before the storm. 61 is the temperature right now. this is not going to have a huge impact on the metro area but the western slope and mountains will be hit with a bit of welcome snow fall. doppler 4000, we'll zoom in, that's all snow that's been falling. as we zoom out, here is the storm system coming out of southern california, moving over las vegas. look at the precipitation in iz all of that will be making its way into colorado. that's why we anticipate seeing such significant snow amounts for the high country, winter weather advisories, winter storm warnings in effect through tomorrow morning. travel for the next couple hours won't be bad but as time goes on especially this evening and tonight, conditions will deteriorate. in the san juan,

will be dry through sunset. the sun goes down around 4:45. after sunset we can see a couple rain showers tonight in denver. overnight as temperatures drop close to freezing, a few snow flakes are mixed in. it could be a rain-snow mix for the commute in denver tomorrow, only slushy accumulation expected. in the mountains, snowpacked roads, winter driving conditions, you name it. it ca we'll talk more about this in detail and have the outlook for thanksgiving. >> thank you so much. another delay for a man to enter a plea on charges who shot and killed a popular doctor in centennial. prosecutors said they may seek the death penalty against kevin lion. he is accused of shooting and killing dr. ken atkinson. lions is also charged with

neighbor. his defense is expected to let the court know if they will enter a not guilty by reason of insanity plea. lions has been found competent to stand trial. happening now, the second trial is underway for lester jones, the man accused of killing page burgfield in 2007. she was a single mother who led a double life as a paid escort. jones was a client and one of the last people to see her beforesh her remains were not found until 2012, years later. jones' lawyers argue there is no physical evidence connecting him to the crime. the jury in the first trial could not reach a unanimous verdict. right now, president elect donald trump is back in new york city meeting with reporters and medium executives. among them, cbs' charlie rose and political director john dickerson. kenneth craig is outside trump

>> reporter: oklahoma governor mary foulen was among the latest potential job seekers to meet with donald trump in trump tower today. >> it was an initial meeting to discuss a wide range of topics. >> reporter: the former texas governor and one time gop rival rick perry met with mr. trump this morning. over the weekend he hosted other high profile republicans at his golf course in new jersey. among considered for secretary of state. >> there was a great deal to discuss, mutual respect. i had a productive conversation. >> reporter: among top contenders is will bert ross for secretary of commerce and steve mnuchin for secretary of the treasury. aids believe these highly publicized meetings at trump tower and new jersey prove the president elect is trying to be transparent during the process.

car as 44 year old philip penny. that car was found in a ditch at 9th and allison. investigators say they're following up on leads but so far have not made arrests. they're asking anyone who may know something about the shooting to give them a call. pope francis is extending his year of mercy indefinitely. the catholic church has considered abortion a sin and automatically ex communicated anyone who gets one or aids the procedure. last year the pope allowed all priests the power to dissolve what the church called the sin of abortion. now they will be able to continue that practice. the church still says abortion is a grave sin but pope francis says there is no sin that cannot be wiped away by the mercy of god. four police officers were shot in unrelated attacks around the nation this weekend. three of the officers are expected to survive but an you

an intense man hunt for the suspect. >> officer down in front of headquarters. >> reporter: that urgent call came moments moments after ben marconi was shot. police have video of this man being buzzed in hours before the incident. he left a short time later. they believe he is behind the attack. >> i think the target and anyone who happened along was the person he targeted. >> reporter: the police chief william mcmanis says the detective pulled over somebody in front of police headquarters just before noon. the suspect parked behind the patrol car and approached the driver's side window where marconi was sitting. he allegedly shot him twice in the head before running to his

teens at the end of next weekend. 61 in denver. we are warming to the 60s for most areas. meanwhile most mountain areas are in the 40s or 50s. we'll warm up a few more degrees in most spots but that's it. we'll see more and more cloud cover as we go through the day. i want to take the clouds off so we can see a closer view of where the rain and snow is. as we zoom into the western grand junction into montrose. it's been snow through much of the day so far in the san juan mountains. a storm system is moving out of southern california across northern arizona and toward us. since the storm is from the southwest it will be the san juans who see the highest amounts. we'll say 8 to 14 inches for

tomorrow morning. these are the totals by tomorrow morning. most of this will fall nii-70 corridor. we have five to ten inches for summit county, north through winter park, going towards steamboat springs. here is the futurecast. i want to pause this at 5:00 p.m. between now and 5:00 i will be surprised if we see moisture here. in the mountains we will see scattered snow showers. tonight after midnight will be our best po precipitation in denver. it doesn't get that cold tonight. we'll stay above freezing. therefore we expect rain the metro area and it may briefly change to snow. this is 9:00 am tomorrow. it's probably going to be a rain snow mix. there could be enough to create slushy accumulation on grassy surfaces. tomorrow afternoon the sun comes back as the storm moves away. look at the nebraska, dakotas, iowa, minnesota, that's the end of the day tomorrow, a lot of

,, a consumer alert as toys r us stops the sale of this truck after one caught fire in the bed of a pickup truck. a couple in washington state had just bought a 12-volt tonka mighty wheels for their grandson. this happened and they realized it was on fire. the couple got out of the truck and no one was hurricane

they figure out why this one caught fire. a report shows how dangerous it can be to walk through a parking lot. up to 2/3 of drivers may be distracted. >> reporter: video captured the moment a speeding driver struck a mother pushing her 15 month old baby's stroller. the 24 year old died and her baby survived. wisconsin police released this video of a driver who lost control of his vehicle slamming into nine a stop, amazingly no one was seriously injured. the national safety council found that on average at least 60,000 are injured and 500 or more die in 50,000 plus crashes in parking lots and garages every year. >> it's just as dangerous to be distracted in a parking lot going 5 miles an hour as it is to be going 50 miles an hour. >> deborah hersmann runs

>> people have their heads down. they're in their phones. there is a lot of inattention out there. >> a survey found 66% felt comfortable making calls driving in a parking lot. more than half would text. roughly half were okay with sending e-mail, using social media, taking pictures, watching video. 42% said they would video chat. on average every year, 51 people die in accidents where a car is backing up in the parking lot. extra second as a driver to double check behind you on are use the back up camera before you start driving.
