exploding some of them behind the house. and of her price is on the scene. why the evacuations today? >> reporter: well, eight homes were actually evacuated around this home that you see behind me. this was done by the bomb squad and the castle rock fire department. this is the second time they have come into this house to remove dangerous and explosive chemical -- ch this all started around halloween when police came to the home to find the parents of a teenager arrested on an unrelated incident. it led officers to this home. when a police officer walked around, he noticed a large amount of chemicals in plainview. that kicked off a criminal investigation. those chemicals were removed that night and now today, more dangerous ones are taken out. the family that was at this home had to hire a company to take most of it out but the

most dangerous bottles of chemicals which is why the technicians were out here today. the fire chief told me this house is now clear but police are investigating why so many chemicals were even in here to begin with.>> with what we removed today, the biggest risk was explosion and fire. so with that, the precautions that we took were to make sure that the bomb techs had the ability -- that's why we if these erupted into fire, which is what they were more potential love was reactive, to snow, humidity, they wanted to be able to drop it and run away. >> reporter: sources and neighbors say the teenager that lives here they believe was very involved in chemistry and had a passion for chemistry but the criminal investigation now being done by castle rock police department will now determine if any charges will

that were found inside that home. because of the danger that it put not only the occupants of the home in, the homeowners, their children, but also the people that live in this neighborhood, a very quiet and normal neighborhood. live in castle rock, jennifer brice cbs 4 news. >> thank you for that. happening now, the busy thanksgiving travel season is well underway. aaa says 43.5 million people are expected to drive this year. here in colorado, state patrol is reminding everyone to buc in that important step. our jamie leary has spent her morning at dia. how are things moving at this hour? >> reporter: it's actually pretty unbelievable. if you look at the normal security line, i think wait

the tsa last year admitted they were understaffed so this year they contacted extra employees and it seems to be working. still, dia is expecting record travel numbers. it is anticipated over 1 million passengers will travel through. over the next few days. that is 10% more than last year with the busiest day expected to be sunday. across the nation, aaa says it hasn't seen this many travelers since 2007, between 43 and 49 million people expected to hit the road or sky. big -- busy travel aside, being at the airport allows you to talk with a lot of different people about their holiday travels. it for things having and surprising a couple of my sisters. we are going to do it on saturday after thanksgiving so pretty exciting. >> reporter: this is a huge deal. how are you feeling? >> i am really nervous. >> reporter: what are your expectations traveling with this guy? >> he has fallen before and it was a case i'm not too worried. he usually calms down after security. >> reporter: hopefully he will map on the plane.>> yeah. >> reporter: lots of great

we're starting to see the wind picked up if you're heading west out of denver you will hit a pretty gusty west wind as you start to climb the foothills toward the continental divide. need a good grip on that steering well. no cloud cover over the state except a few high clouds in the west but that is going to change. there is a new storm coming onshore in the pacific northwest and out ahead of it, it has a cold front with a band of snow just about to work its way into salt lake city utah. as we roll through time and get into the overni into colorado and it is going to pick up our wind, drop our temperatures, and some of us are going to see snow. in the big weather segment, i will outline those details for you and get you through your holiday travel. right now, president-elect trump is at his home in south florida but he continues to work on his cabinet appointments. he just appointed one person whom he had previously criticized. weijia jiang has the latest.

donald trump's offer to be the u.s. ambassador to the united nations out of a sense of duty. mr. trump is in florida for thanksgiving. in a statement this morning, the president-elect praised the daughter of indian immigrants saying she has a proven track record of bringing people together. during the republican primaries, nikki haley was a trump critic who endorsed marco rubio and mr. trump tweeted months ago that the people of north carolina are embarrassed by nikki haley. former rival dr. ben carson who is in the running to be th urban development to social media to announce that a announcement is forthcoming. >> reporter: president-elect may be walking back several controversial campaign positions. during an interview with the nori -- with the new york times, reporters life we did shifts in policy including his promise to investigate hillary clinton. >> to get a special prosecutor to look into your situation. >> reporter: according to one

the man was bleeding from his chest. so far, police have not identified that man or how he may have died. we have learned a mother convicted in the deaths of her two young sons is out of prison after serving only a third of her sentence. matt kroschel talked with heather jensen about her life after prison and the loss of her sons. >> it's very hard. >> reporter: a terrible dream that won't and even as heather jensen leaves a jail cell for a halfway house. it's even if i didn't go to prison or if i was still in there, i don't get to watch them grow up. >> reporter: in 2012, she left her children in a toyota four runner near a ski area while she was having sex with a man in another car. four-year-old tyler and his two- year-old brother william overheated and died. jensen was sentenced to nearly a decade. >> we find defendant heather jensen guilty. >> reporter: but she has only

years. that has the toddler's grandparents angry.>> i don't think she would've hat -- would have even been to court if we didn't raise a stink. she got sentenced only five euros per child. >> reporter: according to the department of corrections, jensen was accepted to the community corrections in july of this year. a decision the grandparents of the two boys who died say they didn't know until this week. >> cannot believe it. i saw a picture of her at the >> reporter: jensen says she can't take back what happened but is trying to move forward. >> if i was still in there or out or never went, i have to spend the rest of my life that my kids. >> reporter: matt kroschel cbs news. coming up, how cdot is making driving easier for travelers this weekend. later, a warning for

,, happening today, cdot will open a stretch of highway 34 to all drivers between loveland and estes park. crews closed the 3 mile stretch to all but local travel to make repairs to damage left by the 2013 floods. drivers should expect some delays. that closure will be back in

thanksgiving and chris spears is joining us now to talk about this important travel day. >> we are always in the hot seat the day before thanksgiving in the weather department. it certainly could be worse. let's take a look at the current temperatures right now. we are mostly in the 30s and 40s across the state. we do have a couple of 50s showing up way over there on the far eastern plains. 54 degrees here and 50 degrees in tomorrow but they seasonable checking with weather watchers, 46 degrees in northwest brush. 42 degrees in northeast arvada. right now just a few high clouds are starting to filter into northwest colorado. this is the forerunner of a new system that came onshore last night. it is making some progress sitting over salt lake city utah into idaho. this will bring a wind shift and some slightly cooler weather to colorado. we going to see a little

snow will increase in our western and central mountains through the overnight. if you are planning to travel after work tonight, could be dicey on your higher passes. but as we get into the midday on thursday, this will clear on out. we will be left with some pretty gusty wind from time to time and talk to bless no around. a little bit of travel trouble if you are heading north and west out of denver. we don't have any winter weather advisories or warnings at this time. inches of snow. you notice darker blue in and around steamboat springs. some of the northwest facing slips could get into the 2 to 4 inch or 5 inch accumulation but this is not a big snow maker, just enough to freshen up the ski slopes for thanksgiving and create a little travel hazard overnight. mostly 20s across the state. the wind will keep our temperatures up. older, fort collins, you could hang around 30 degrees. telluride down to about 15
