here we go. let's watch as they start to open up the doors here. we have been watching the line here a couple of hours. we know the line formed yesterday. people showed up 6:00 p.m. on wednesday. here, we see the first people, they will be welcomed in to get the things they have been waiting for. when we arrived in the afternoon, the line was actually around the building. going toward the first part of the building and curving around the corner. here they come, the folks who have been waiting so long in night here. just to make sure they can get the products they wanted. so what did they want? well, the two big items we have been hearing about so far is a laptop as well as a tv. a special laptop you can get at a unique price. there are only a handful available in colorado. tvs you can see throughout. there is one tv under $200. that is a 49-inch. other tvs like the one we are showing you now.

who wants them or needs them. 300 volunteers have been working since saturday to put it all together. >> when the ad went up on facebook, i thought i would love to help. it has been great to give back and bring warmth and food and love to the denver community. >> by the end of the day, they will have fed nearly 5300 people. right now, calmer weather along the front range after a windy start to the day. this video taken from lookout mountain show gusts there shaking the trees and look at the images from mile high stadium. you can see the flags whipping around in the wind. let's get to meteorologist dave aguilera in colorado's weather center tonight. dave, the winds have died down a bit. >> they have, but the turkey was trying to hold on. a little windy thanksgiving behind a cold front that came through early this morning. here's a look at the winds we saw. 33 miles an hour in denver. 58 in boulder.

rocky flats and wheat ridge, 72 and 74 miles an hour winds respectively this morning. but, they have died down, now, that is pretty impress i when you keep in mind 75 miles an hour is hurricane force winds so it was really rocking and rolling out there this morning. here is what we are looking at. only a 26 miles an hour gust in golden. estes park. 12 in parker. so the winds have died down. 33 in winter park. as we go through the night, it will be a little breezy. it is dying down. the reason, there is a nice ridge of high pressure temperatures up a little bit tomorrow, karen. and, calm the winds just a little bit as well. so, i think you will like the friday forecast. and at least the first part of the weekend forecast as well which is coming up in a few minutes. >> thanks dave. now to an update on two teenagers rescued from the mount of the holy cross after being lost two days. only cbs4 was there when the crews came off the mountain after finding the teenagers. they are being treated at university of colorado

and rick, they have quite the story to tell. >> reporter: they certainly do this thanksgiving karen, thanksgiving indeed. they were up on that treacherous peak that is 14,000 feet high without sleeping bags or a tent. but that was for good reason. for reasons of balance. and they had planned to come down the same day. but then the snowstorm hit and everything changed. we just saw them, they are okay. and, in good tommy hendricks and matt smith are being treated here at the burn unit of university of colorado hospital. each survived the difficult ordeal with only frostbite to the toes, and the thumb. they were rescued yesterday when a black hawk helicopter and ground searchers spotted their tracks. they had reached the summit, but a snowstorm came in early creating white-out conditions. then they got lost in what is known as the bermuda triangle

>> absolutely not. fear is the epitome of doubt. and if you doubt yourself in the mountains you are screwed. and so, we didn't. we weren't fearful. >> fear is the enemy. >> it is. >> if you have fear, then you are never going the climb a mountain. you will never be able to climb any rock. if you are consumed with fear you won't be able to focus on what need to be done to get the right hand hold and foothold. and survive. treated here at the burn unit of university of colorado because this is one of the few in the country that has a special treatment for frostbite. at 6:00, we will hear much more from them and why this thanksgiving is especially one to be grateful for. rick sallinger, cbs4 news. >> thank you rick. developing now, a death investigation is underway in denver.

and filmore. police have not released information on who the victim is or how the person died. the people on the scene are not cooperating with the investigation. tragic start to thanksgiving for colorado family. teenager was killed in a head- on crash. this was on i-25 earlier this morning. state troopers say 25-year-old alex rodriguez was driving the wrongway near erie, crashed head on into a subaru. the passenger in that subaru, 19-year-old kyle nankos, the hospital we are told with life threatening injuries. troopers believe rodriguez was under the influence of alcohol. he is expected to survive. following a developing story tonight, a family in aurora is picking up the pieces after a devastating fire burned through their home. a mother and her 32-year-old son lost their lives in the fire. it happened last wednesdays in a home near sixth avenue and delmar circle.

tonight. a tough thanksgiving for this family for sure. >> reporter: certainly. and it has been one week since john vargas lost his wife and son to this devastating fire. he has since returned to flowers and messages of support from the community. but, despite losing everything, vargas says he still has a lot to be thankful for. >> because it happened so fast. it was within minutes. my whole world turned around. >> reporter: last wednesday, an early morning fire the vargas family's home in aurora destroying everything in its path. john vargas and his four sons were able to escape. his wife janelle was in the shower. >> the smoke was so thick, you couldn't see walls or anything. but i had to get in. i kept yelling for her and yelling for her .... >> reporter: when john couldn't get to her, his son gabriel went back in to try and help.

and he wasn't about to quit. >> reporter: janelle didn't make it out. >> my wife is 4' 7", a tiny little woman but the biggest heart in the world. >> reporter: gabrielle was left in critical condition after trying to save her. he was taken off of life support over the weekend. >> he would tell his mother so many times that i would die for you mom. and ironically, it pass, he did just that. he died trying to save his mother he loved so much. >> reporter: while it might be their first thanksgiving apart, john says they will always be together. >> they are both going to be there. her and my son will both be there. they will never be forgotten, that's for sure. >> reporter: now, the family rushed out of the home and managed to only get out with the clothes they had on. some even without shoes. friends and family members have started a go fund me page to help the family as they try to

,, >> now, to a sad update on the deadly school bus crash in tennessee. a sixth child who was on board the bus has died. eight-year-old cavonte wilson died yesterday at the hospital. 37 children were riding the bus when it smashed into a tree monday in chattanooga. five students died at the scene. five others remain in the hospital. the location of the crash was not along a designated bus route the driver should have been on. toxicology reports say the driver did not have drugs or

time. new information after an e- cigarette explodes. it happened in new york. surveillance video shows otis gooding talking to coworkers there when suddenly sparks and fire erupt out of the pockets of his pants. gooding was rushed to the hospital. >> met with him today. saw the injury to his thigh and leg. which is absolutely horrible. this man is going to need surgery. who knows what result will this terrible burn. >> the u.s. fire administration says there were more than two dozen incidents of explosions caused by e-cigarettes between 2009 and 2014. most are linked to the vaporizer's lithium ion battery. a category 2 hurricane is slamming central america. otto made landfall along the

hurricane to hit the coast. it is weakening into a tropical storm as it moves across costa rica. a small mountain town has a unique holiday tradition. matt kroschel tells us how salida does it. >> it is a huge tradition. >> reporter: salida is known for its heart. >> just a magical time. >> reporter: and it is on tenderfoot mountain at the end of main street every year, heart is in bright li >> the whole town fills up down main street. doesn't matter if it is freezing out or you know ... it is a huge celebration. >> reporter: workers putting up christmas lights here count the strands by the dozens as locals prepare for the big reveal. >> when it started it was all volunteers. just a few years ago, financial sup fort from the city. >> reporter: and volunteers put up more than 10,000 christmas

>> it is one of the largest christmas trees that we know of in the united states. >> reporter: this is what it will look like tomorrow evening. >> the biggest christmas tree i have ever seen. >> reporter: a larger than life tradition that attracts thousands here every year to witness. and can even be seen from passing commercial planes above. reporting from the heart of the rockies, matt kroschel, cbs4 mountain news room. >> that is pretty cool. matt. thank you. happening now, four ski rert celebrating opening day. crested butte shared this picture on their facebook page. they got nine inches of snow in the last seven days. aspen mountain, wolf creek and snow mass opened. vail and beaver creek scheduled to open tomorrow. we are enjoying a pleasant thanksgiving day. meteorologist dave aguilera joins us now to learn more about the weekend. >> i tell you what, all things considered, it has turned out to be a beautiful holiday. earlier this morning we had a little precipitation over northern colorado as the cold front came through. a little bit of snow in the

folks to get out and really enjoy the day. behind the front was a little bit cooler today. on the big picture, what we are watching is a high pressure ridge. it is sliding in tomorrow, saturday, giverring us a pretty good start to the weekend. then we turn our attention to the little cold front that is moving into portland. it will change things upstarting sunday into the start of next week. here we go into tomorrow. we are mostly clear across the state. the high pressure ridge is righ clear skies wall to wall across the state. so we are looking good to end the week on a friday. and saturday, we will be ahead of this guy. it will be a little breezy. still a nice day. this is sunday morning. if you are in western colorado, you could see snow, maybe some rain. and we will start to cloud up sunday east of the continental divide as the low from las vegas starts to move closer into colorado. but then by the afternoon, a little dry slot pulls in. we start to see the moisture dry up.

mostly cloudy and a few breaks in the clouds in the afternoon on sunday. much cooler temperatures coming for monday and tuesday. here is the way things shook out today. we were 49 at the airport. and normal highs of 48. this is where we should be. 40 degrees out there. downtown, and dia has already dropped like a rock. weather watchers, michelle kelly in westminster coming in at 46. brewer and silverthorne cold. 22 decrees. we will have clear skies so it will be chilly. 20s and teens across the east. single digits and teens in the mountains. grand junction, 24 overnight. then tomorrow, 50s , across the eastern plains. so just a little bit warmer than what we had today with 40s and 50s in the mountains and west as the cool air stays locked in out there. so mostly clear, breezy, we will be about 25 in town. we have poor air quality out there this evening. tomorrow, mostly sunny. upper 50s to near 60 degrees right here in town.

on saturday and warmer, 61. 57 on sunday. the next system starts to move in. cooling down to 45. tuesday, we drop down to 35 and another chance of light rain. i think the holiday has been pretty nice. >> it has been awesome. >> thanks dave. nearly 80 dogs from northern texas up for adoption at the dumb friends league. they were brought to colorado from an overburdened shelter some good homes. they range in age from puppies to adults and include breeds of all different sizes. super cute. broncos had to go to work today before celebrating with their family and friends tonight. coming up, the team tells us about one of the things they are thankful for and they hope

>> not everybody get to take a day off. >> broncos had to work today. but they got it out of quickly to spend the rest of the day with their families. they have plenty to be thankful for. their 7-3 record. they could easily be 6-4 or 5- 5. they could be thank. for their health and the return of family and friends. broncos about as healthy as you could hope for in late november. with the return of aqib talib and derek wolf, the defense pretty much back to full strength. wolf says he is thankful to be back. he said it was miserable having

so, you happen to stand on the sidelines. standing on the sidelines is miserable. just standing there three hours is not fun. then you have to watch your team go out there and grind. thankfully, we won. but you know, it is not fun to watch. >> we started getting guys healthy again. and, we look around the huddle. see the starters. every that you start the season with. it is a beautiful thing to see. and, hopefully, we can take that momentum and use it for the rest of the season. >> turkey day football in oi the first in the north. matt stafford to anquan bolew. they have had to rally. they tied the score at 13 with two minutes left. picked off sam bradford with 30 seconds left. then matt prader with 0 seconds left. detroit in first place. the avalanche scored a first period gold last night for the first time in 11 games. scored two in fact.

the oilers and lost 6-3. the nuggets got off to a real slow start in salt lake as the jazz jumped out to a 19-3 lead with both sets of starters on the floor. now, the nuggets bench made the game interesting by halftime. then they started on a 17--3 run. a 25 point blow-out for the jazz. >> by no means is there any need to panic. we had a bad game tonight. it happens in the nba. we but the starting group has to come out and play with a lot more responsibility. they have a responsibility as the starting lineup to get us off to a good start. that has not been the case lately. >> see if i take it more serious tomorrow. they host the thunder.
