came as a shock. shocked all of america. the broadway star turned tv star died at the age of 82 years old. good morning. one of the stories we're covering today on this black friday. i'm alan gionet. live look, chilly morning as we get started. 31 degrees out there now in denver. ashton is telling us what's ahead. what do we have? it's going to be warmer today. good morning. sun will be up in about hour. temperatures now in the 20s and 30s around town. typical for a late november morning. if anything, it's a little warmer than normal outside. today and tomorrow we'll be in the 60s and colder weather starts coming in on sunday. a lot of snow coming in for the end of the weekend as well. details on that straight ahead. now let's get over to joe for a check on traffic. >> reporter: south side of town into downtown, castle rock to

bridges to downtown looking nice and wide open. i'll give you your full traffic update coming up. >> sounds good. dozens of big box stores are opening. millions hunting for the best deals. they hit the doors early this morning. off they went. a lot of stores opened yesterday. this best buy where people flooded in to get their hands on all kinds of gadgets was busy. let's go to lane lyon, he's live at the lone tree. what's going on? >> reporter: opening up at 5:00 a.m. today. this line here, we asked someone, what are you waiting for? this is the line to check out. all of these people got up nice and early today to make sure they're hitting some of the deals, get the early birds getting the worm we might say. it's been interesting, the last couple of years when it comes to black friday, traditionally this was the day most people did their shopping.

opening at different times, best buy you just mentioned, opened up yesterday and isn't reopening until 8:00 this morning. we ran into some shoppers today, where is best buy? some stores weren't opening at all so employees could celebrate their thanksgiving weekend. we're live on channel 4 now. >> hi. >> reporter: you're up early. why do this? >> because they had a really good gps on sale for my husband. >> reporter: i hope he's not watching. does they get up early -- he get up early? >> he's over there. it's not a surprise. >> reporter: is it worth it? >> it's fun to do together while the kids are still sleeping. >> reporter: thank you for talking to us. we'll be here the rest of the morning telling you what you can find here and more information where the deals are and the fact americans are

aren't as busy. >> thanks a lot. great to see you out there. two colorado teenagers are telling a story of survival after they were trapped on one of colorado's highest peaks. they were rescued wednesday from mount of the holy cross in eagle county. our rick salinger reports they got stuck in what's known as the bermuda triangle of the rockies. >> reporter: tommy hendricks on the right and matt smith spent two treacherous nights on a frigid peak with only rocks to provide protection. >> snow and what not. put my head under the jacket and have to smell his feet. >> literally just snuggling up next to each other, because we had to have that body heat to survive. >> reporter: and survive they did. suffering only frost bite to the toes and the thigh. >> did you ever think it might not turn out this way? >> absolutely not. fear is the epitome of doubt and if you doubt yourself in the mountains you're screwed.

definitely with us. probably the only thing keeping us alive and our ability to know we would get back down safely. >> reporter: rescue teams pulled the two colorado springs teens from the mountain after spotting their tracks. >> i was thankful because i really wanted to just see my family for thanksgiving. so i didn't want to be hiking and eating cold ramen on thanksgiving. i was >> when that chopper saw us, moment of pure joy. we knew we would get out of there and would be okay. >> reporter: they were taken by ambulance for treatment first in vail, before being transported to the denver area. >> that's rick salinger reporting. the two are in the burn unit at the university of colorado hospital because they have expertise in special treatment for frost bite there. let's get to your weather and traffic. here's ashton. good morning to you, alan.

holiday weekend. but for today, improvements across much of colorado. for the time being, it is cold. no matter where you're at. the coldest temperatures in the mountain valleys like avon, it's 8 degrees there. at the base of beaver creek, vail and beaver creek both open. 28 near the utah line over in we have clear skies along with light winds. it's the recipe for maximum radiational cooling. without something on top of us to help keep the heat trapped, it escapes overnight and it's one of the reasons why temperatures are so cold. the opposite is clear this afternoon. with clear skies sun will warm us up, about 10 degrees warmer today than yesterday. about 60 this afternoon. then evening temperatures will be down into the 30s for anything you have planned for this evening.

for the mountains straight ahead. now let's get over to joe in for joel this morning with traffic. >> reporter: good morning. here's a look at i-25 and highway 36 from copter 4. quite a nice drive in fact, especially on the highway. if you need to use the highways to get to the malls this morning, or your favorite store to do black friday shopping, it's going to look good. let's take a look at park meadows. county line on and off to i-25, also yosemite, those be their busiest, park meadow center drive is always a headache especially this time and black friday. but no accidents or at alls in the mall area. developing story out of fort collins, investigators say they're working on a sexual assault case that ended with a police chase on wednesday night. we've learned the suspect was released early from prison for a separated violent attack. here's our jeff todd. >> reporter: it was wednesday night around 10:00 when the fort collins police were called

the busy intersection of harmony and college. >> the suspect reportedly threatened the female victim with a knife. victim was able to escape with just minor injuries. >> reporter: when police arrived, the suspect took off. with the assistance of larimer county sheriffs department and state patrol, followed the suspect vehicle. the suspect attempted to hit fled into this neighborhood. >> he fled on foot. he was apprehended a short time later. we're always grateful when nobody is injured. >> reporter: online records show he was arrested in 1997 for stabbing a convenience store clerk and stealing money. online reports indicate he was released after serving 18 years of a 32 year sentence.

several felonies. >> we heard one larimer county sheriffs vehicle was damaged in that chase. it's likely the suspect has a court hearing this morning. but jail records indicate he will not be getting out on bond this time. detectives are looking at what happened to a person found dead thanksgiving morning at 43rd and fillmore, south of i- 70. police haven't released information on who died there. officers tell us people at scene were not cooperating. this thanksgiving weekend a family is mourning the death of a teenager who police say was killed by a drunk driver. that crash happened yesterday morning on i-25 and highway 7 in broomfield county. police suspect the man driving an suv was drunk when he hit that blue car that had two teenagers inside. 19-year-old died, the 16-year- old driver seriously hurt. the drunk driver will be

he's released from the hospital. overnight we found this gofundme page set up for kyle's funeral expenses. so far they've raised over $7,000. a tough, tough situation for that family. president-elect trump is now raising millions of dollars for his inauguration in january. sources close to his administration say he set a $1 million donation limit for corporations, but no limit during the campaign he vowed to drain the swamp of special interests. meanwhile, the committee will reportedly not accept money from any registered lobbyists. if you'd like to decorate your tree with an election souvenir, donald trump will sell you that. make america great again brass ornament is for sale.

vail, they open today. there's the wild wood express. lift will start at 9:00 this morning. i'm not sure that specific chair will be. vail opens today. look at the temperature, 8, that's from a thermometer that's much, much lower than 13,000 feet. mountain valleys are very cold this morning. avon you can see, nearby beaver creek opens, they're at 8. leadville at 8. front range, 20s and 30s now. te warmer today than yesterday. that will put us up near 60 in the metro area. mostly sunny skies state-wide. two weather makers, high pressure on top of us now, keeping us dry today and tomorrow. and snow coming back into the mountains tomorrow night. futurecast from 9:00 a.m. today until 9:00 9:00 p.m.

continuing sunday and into monday as well. precipitation will try to make its way to the metro area. because the storm will be coming in from the west and flow will be out of the west. down slope along the front range, preventing any precipitation for us. the mountains this will be a sizable storm. ten to 14 inches for the san juan mountains, saturday night through monday. 8to 12 mountains north, steamboat. summit county and much of the i- 70 corridor at least 5 to 10 inches. winter driving conditions and slowdowns expected weekend. meanwhile in denver sunday, broncos game, kickoff temperature 39. fourth quarter, 35. joe is here for joel. >> reporter: good morning. here's a look at the highway drive from copter 4. no major accidents or stalls to report on much of the highways. if you need to use those to get your shopping going, that's probably a good place to do so. let's focus on the aurora mall.

biggest headaches this morning. i would throw abilene in this as well. i-225 around alameda and mississippi area looking good for now. joe, thanks a lot. only been hours since thanksgiving ended, but this morning we know how much americans spent shopping online yesterday. this is the news from wall street now. let's go to jill wagner live in the new york stock exchange this morning. good morning, jill. >> reporter: good morning, alan. markets reop thanksgiving holiday in record high territory again. dow rose 59 points to a new high. nasdaq fell 5. markets only open today about half a day. futures pointing to a higher open. a lot of people already started shopping online. according to early numbers, thanksgiving day brought in $1.15 billion in online sales. that's about 14% more than last year. breakfast could be getting more

harvest problem in canada. rain and snow delayed harvests there. companies like general mills and quaker mills use canadian oats. and black friday could be going to the dogs. numbers found 30% of black friday shoppers are planning to buy something for pets this year, up from 17% last year. big difference. alan. >> thanks a lot, jill. great to see you, hope you had a good thanksgiving. top stories now this as people shopped yesterday. one person was killed outside a macy's at a mall in new jersey. it happened early this morning. police have not said if they have arrested anybody yet. fight over a parking space led somebody to pull a gun at a wal- mart in reno, nevada last night. one person is dead. police have not said if this was related to black friday shopping, but it did happen at

after they escape from jail in san jose on thanksgiving day. two other inmates also made it out, but authorities caught them. investigators are trying to figure out if this was planned for a long time. they say the inmates all shared the same cell. criminals on the run are considered dangerous. happening today, if you'd rather spend your black friday outdoors you can. you can do this. the state park system is making an offer that is hard to resist. l waiving fees today as a way to encourage people to get outside. also today, vail and beaver creek resorts are open. crested butte opened yesterday. shared these pictures with us on our facebook, or on their facebook page. they had a great shot there. 9inches of snow. aspen, snowmass, wolf creek opened yesterday. beaver creek today.

as our sunset gets earlier and earlier. another month of this before the trend reverses and the days gradual start getting longer again. high of 60. joel hillan is off today. that's all right, because joe is here. >> reporter: good morning. here's a look at the drive from the west side of town, i-70 eastbound 6th avenue, eastbound hampden and highway 285, and also eastbound c-470 are looking nice and wide open for now. i'll have your full traffic picture coming up. >> black friday. some shoppers have been at it for hours. they're lining up for the deals. our lane lyon is at the cabala's in lone tree now. they've been open since midnight, lane. >> reporter: that's right, alan. the national retail federation expects americans will spend more this year, even though there's a lot of options to purchase and deals really kind of hit, became more available through online sales two, three

we look for the deals and we get up early and it's part of what we like to do. others are saying, i'm staying home, i'm ordering online. we will see how the numbers shake out. coming up, though, i'm going to talk with a representative from cabala's who say they expected big crowds. stay tuned for that. >> lane, thanks a lot. new details about a legal fight between a wolfgang puck. the owner of the kitchen filed a lawsuit. karen morfitt takes a closer look. >> reporter: these two images may look the same, but they're two competing restaurants. on the left, the kitchen which started in boulder more than 10 years ago. >> we're simply asking that they find another name. >> reporter: the one on the right is also the kitchen, but

letters there's also by wolfgang puck. the owner of the boulder restaurant says the name is trademark infringement. the director of marketing for the company explains their concerns. >> it erodes the brand. and that's really the fear is their brand is not our brand promise that we have continued to create and they're using our good will we've created with the communities we've worked with. >> reporter: they've filed lawsuit, claiming musk met with puck in 2012 to discuss and share advice about the industry, allegedly snapping this photo following the meeting. >> he unveiled all his plans to wolfgang under the guise ofment orship -- mentorship and trusted him. to have wolfgang and his them open the kitchen -- team open the kitchen, it's like a punch in the gut. >> reporter: a statement was

saying they consider the action to be without merit and have vowed to defend vigorously. in denver, karen morfitt, cbs4 news. let's get the latest on what's happened with the weather. >> stuck at 31, and that's warm compared to a lot of places around the state. leadville at 8. alamosa has 6. 14 weld county at greeley. for everybody you have to bundle up. definitely is chilly. this afternoon will be pleasant. highs upper 50s. close to 60 for everod the front range. fort collins 56. boulder at 58. the springs a little cooler, 52 in el paso county. couple of clouds, but that's it. mostly sunny skies. storm system approaching the west coast. as this moves closer it's going to spread snow back into the mountains and could create quite the travel headache for trying to get out of the high country if your plan is to come back to the metro area sunday. futurecast from 9:00 a.m. this morning through 9:00 p.m. tomorrow, not showing anything.

spreads throughout the mountains. precipitation tries to move towards denver. we'll have a down slope here. i think we'll stay dry for denver and the front range. 5to 10 inches of snow along most of the i-70 corridor. more than that north and south of 70. the san juans will likely see the most significant snow, 10 to 14 inches. that's from late saturday night through monday. meanwhile, sunshine today, tomorrow and sunday. though it will turn cooler and it will be breezy on sunday. kickoff temperature for the broncos, doesn't look as as it once did. little bit warmer, but still chilly. 39 at kickoff sunday night. >> reporter: here's a look at copter 4, this is i-25 and hampden. there's actually a few more cars on the highways now compared to earlier this morning. either way, it's looking good. here's a look at flatiron crossing. highway 36 is looking good around that area. the exits on 96 and also west

but northwest parkway still having problems. few delays on that part of the highways. otherwise, alan, no major accidents or stalls to report. it's why you see a lot of green out there. one aurora family is going through heart breaking loss this thanksgiving holiday weekend. fire last week killed a mother and son. father and husband went through thanksgiving yesterday without them. our andrea flores spoke with him and he says he still has a lot to be thankful for. >> because it within minutes, my whole world turned around. >> reporter: last wednesday an early morning fire tore through the vargas family home in aurora, destroying everything. john vargas and his four sons were able to escape. his wife was in the shower. >> immediately when you open the door, the smoke, it was so thick, you couldn't see anything. i have to get in. i kept yelling for her, yelling for her. it wasn't going to happen.

get to her, his son gabriel went back in. >> he ran back in and he wasn't about to quitted. >> reporter: janelle didn't make it out. >> my wife is 4'7". tiny woman. but the biggest heart in the world made her seem like she was 6 feet tall. >> reporter: gabriel was taken off life support over the weekend. >> he would tell his mother so many times, i'd die for mom. ironically it came to pass, he died trying to save his mother. >> reporter: while it member their first thanksgiving apart, john says they'll always be together. >> they're both going to be there, her and my son will be there. they'll never be forgotten that's for sure. >> reporter: andrea flores, cbs4 news. >> the family rushed out of the home and had only the clothes on their backs. there is a gofundme page set up

welcome back. it's 6:44 here on this black friday morning. it is time for weather and traffic together on the 4's. beautiful start to the day, but it is cold. our camera at lookout mountain reporting 23 degrees. sun will be up at 6:56. just over 10 minutes from now. not far from lookout mountain is evergreen. 25 there, our weather watcher john kirkpatrick checking in. 50s the last couple of days. actually yesterday we didn't make it 49our official high on thanksgiving. right on the money in terms of normal. today about 10 degrees warmer than yesterday. 60. tomorrow 62 for saturday. and then on sunday we drop to 55. it's a little deceiving, because there will be a lot of wind sunday that will make it feel cooler than that. sunday night the broncos game. we'll check the game forecast and talk about snow in the mountains this weekend straight ahead. let's get over to joe. >> reporter: good morning. here's a look from copter 4 at

their run starts this sunday against the chiefs. here's how it lays now. raiders are atop the division at 8-2. broncos and chiefs tied at 7-3. broncos have six games left to climb back to the top and try for a 6th consecutive division title. they're as healthy as they've been this season after the bye and for the first time since week two, all of the defensive starters are finally ready to take the field, together. talib says he feels super playoff games, a healthy defense will be key in the broncos' run to make the most season -- postseason, especially sunday. the numbers tell us the chief's defense will make it hard for the broncos' offense to score. chiefs fifth in the league in scoring defense and have forced a ton of turnovers. plus 29. in those games, they're 17-3. those numbers speak volumes.
