while investigating an accident. >> he will be really missed. >> a man risks his life to save neighbors from a fire. why wisconsin will recount its ballots from the presidential election. >> a car fire, a chase, then a crash. now, two murder suspects are behind bars. >> developing now, a salute to a fallen hero. a colorado state trooper was killed along i-25 this reminder about the importance of moving over and slowing down so that law enforcement can safely do their jobs. our melissa garcia is live in castle rock, especially sad because these types of accidents can always be avoided. >> reporter: and that was certainly the case with this accident. the troopers say it could have been avoided, jim. this stretch of i-25 northbound after being shut down for most of the afternoon, and, into the

traffic, but, deputies are right now investigating the crash that killed trooper donahue. >> he was really a good kid. good family man. >> reporter: hearts are broken in a community mourning the loss of trooper cody donahue. an 11-year veteran of the colorado state patrol killed in the line of duty friday afternoon. donahue was outside of his vehicle investigating an accident on northbound i-25 just south of castle rock when a passing commercial food him. >> this is becoming much too frequent in our community. and quite frankly, it needs to stop. >> reporter: officers on scene covered the trooper's body with an american flag before saluting and escorting him away in procession. >> he has reached his destination. thank you for your sacrifice. >> reporter: trooper donahue leaves behind a wife and their two elementary school aged

district attorney to determine the case. >> we don't call them accidents. this is a crash. and this could be avoided. when you see the troopers and the law enforcement officers out there just trying to do their job, please move over. give them the room that they need because if not, this is what happens and it continues to happen on a regular basis. >> county sheriffs deputies now are looking into the exact cause of the crash. more details are expected to come as that investigation continues. one thing that investigators say that they are also looking at in their investigation is dash cam from inside two csp trooper vehicles as well as the truck that hit and killed the trooper. we are live in douglas county, melissa garcia, cbs4 news. >> and you will recall another state trooper was killed one

accident scene. jamie juevics was hit and killed. she left behind a husband and a baby daughter. one man's quick thinking might have saved lives when a fire broke out in an apartment complex in thornton. christian andrewson is a former volunteer firefighter. he first heard a smoke alarm going off in a unit two doors down. and then spotted the flames inside the apartment. that is when he jumped in, helping a man in the burning unit get calling 911. >> at that point, the front window blew out and it just accelerated. and, i finally went back inside. so i crawled around on the first floor, trying to find him. the smoke got too bad. i started pounding on the doors and getting everyone out. >> the man anderson helped to safety intentionally had set a couch on fire. he is now facing arson charges. no one was injured in that fire, but some families lost

knit community in mourning. a suspected drunk driver going the wrong way on i-25 crashed into a car carrying two teenagers. one died. now, 24-year-old alex rodriguez is charged with vehicular homicide and dui. tonight in windsor, there was a memorial vigil at the football field for the teen who lost his life. also, prayers for the boy who is badly hurt. cbs4's dillon >> reporter: tonight at windsor high school, hundreds gathered at the football field to pay their final respects to a teenager who lost his life in a dui crash and to say prayers to the student who premains in the hospital. remains in the hospital. >> windsor is missing someone tonight. but, we have an angel in heaven protecting us. >> reporter: for the family of 19-year-old kyle nackos. >> he always put a smile on your face. no matter what was going on.

chance to share memories of kyle. >> a goof ball. a class clown. >> reporter: with his best friends. >> it was neat to see how much support he had. and how much love he had. >> reporter: nackos was killed thursday morning in a suspected wrongway dui crash. friday night, hundreds of his classmates joined his family at windsor high for a vigil. >> for many of them, this is the first time they have lost a close friend. going through the experience is tough. >> reporter: while prayers were said for his family nash, they called for others to honor their brother by making their decision making process. >> never get behind the wheel and drive drunk. because of someone's stupid choice, our brother is now gone and nash is fighting for his life and that guy walked away okay. >> reporter: in hope of saving someone else's family and friends from going through the

>> we would rather teach these lessons in the classroom. >> reporter: the family says they want to continue to pray for the suspect in the dui crash saying he needs as many prayers as anyone else. dillon thomas, cbs4 news. police tweeted out a powerful warning about drinking and driving. you can see a car with an open beer in the center consol. the tweet reeds dangerous dui passed out behind the wheel while stopped southbound in the northbound lanes. it could have been friday for another driver. just in, wisconsin is preparing to recount all the votes cast in the presidential election. green party candidate jill stein filed the request. her campaign raised more than $5 million online to cover the cost of the recounts in wisconsin, michigan, and pennsylvania. she says she wants to make sure hackers didn't skew the results in those swing states. >> a lot of hacks taking place around the election.

party data bases and individual e-mail accounts. what we also know is that the equipment that we use, much of it is not just open to hacks. it basically invites hacks. >> the deadline to file a recount in pennsylvania is monday. for michigan, it is wednesday. a developing story, a chase through denver neighborhoods ends with murder suspects in handcuffs. and, we have learned this case started with a shooting in aurora yesterday. our jeff todd is live where the police to collar these two guys. >> reporter: yeah jim, the chase was on the other side of federal through some neighborhoods but when it came into this commercial area south of mile high stadium, officers knew this was their chance. it ended right here. the case started thursday morning at this travel lodge in aurora. a man was found at 2:30 in the morning with gunshot wounds. he later died. investigators were looking for

the car was still on fire when we got on scene. arson investigators are looking into if it was intentionally set on fire. police saw the suspects nearby and that is when the chase started. officers caught up to the suspects near federal and ninth. a chase went into the neighborhood where this mini van was hit and then on the east side of federal, the chase came to an end as denver police officers executed a maneuver to stop the car. the suspects tried to run, both were tan for nonlife threatening injuries. after being treated it is expected they will be headed to jail. aurora police are not mentioning much about this homicide investigation or the suspects. we expect to find out much more tomorrow. we are live in denver tomorrow, jeff todd, cbs4 news. a popular denver restaurant is closed indefinitely after a fire broke out in the kitchen wednesday night. the owners of the cherry cricket say some of the stoves and kitchen equipment are a

erratic movements. one student said he stopped abruptly so they would hit their heads. the principal also reported the bus was speeding once leaving campus. video shows a restaurant employee fighting an armed robber. this is a popeyes restaurant in minnesota. the worker fights the guy off. this all happens on a sloppy slippery wet floor t. escape. tonight, police are still searching for him after that tussle. well, today, flowers cover florence henderson's star on the hollywood walk of fame. she died yesterday at the age of 28. the nickname came from her best known role. carol brady on the iconic tv sitcom the brady bunch.
