with police. we have the details on this late night incident coming up. police in cedar rapids are going to schools to talk about gun violence. officers are hoping kids will make a pledge against guns. one teacher in oelwein is thanking her student's science project for saving her life. a simple reading led to a big issue she can now keep track of. one man is dead this morning in cedar rapids after police shot him late last night. it started when officers tried to pull three suspects over in an ongoing narcotics investigation. that happened in the 32 hundred block of ravenwood terrace northwest. it's also where the shooting happened just after 10-30 last night. the three suspects inside the vehicle were believed to be involved in drug-related activity at a nearby drug store. when officers pulled them over, one of the men got out and fled. two officers used a police k-9 to track the man down, here, within the block. as they closed in to make an arrest, the suspect opened fire,

shooting a weapon at the officers. they fired back. the man, who police say was in his early 20s, was fatally wounded. he has since died from his injuries. the two officers and the k-9 were not hurt. police are waiting to release the suspect's name until family has been notified. as part of procedure, the two officers involved in the shooting are now on paid administrative leave. the iowa dvision of criminal investigation is looking into the incident. police have not released any information about the two other suspects or the names of the officersnvolved. we will continue to follow this story throughout the morning. live in cedar rapids, forrest saunders, kcrg-tv9. a new york police officer is dead this morning after a gunman shot him during a chase in east harlem. police say housing cop randolph holder was responding to reports of a man with a gun last night. he and his partner, both in plainclothes, shot at the suspects. the gunman shot holder, and he died at harlem hospital. police arrested him four blocks away - he's in custody with gunshot wounds to the leg. three others are also in custody. "

morning to talk to students. local law enforcement and an assistant u-s attorney talked about this with students yesterday at jefferson high school. students told tv-9 they think violence is an issue in cedar rapids. students at jefferson and at several schools in the area are also signing pledges against gun violence as part of the day of national concern. they're omising never to bring a gun to school and never to use a gun to settle a personal problem. law enforcement officials are challenging the teens to hold true to that pledge. an artist in iowa city and his wife hope some of their artwork survived a fire at their home. firefighters saw flames and smoke at 623 east college street. that happened about 5:15 yesterday evening. witness think a lightning strike caused the fire. they told tv-9 they heard a loud boom before it started. everyone in the home made it out safely. t-v nine has confirmed that well-known artist hans breder lives at this house. police say a cedar rapids man broke into anempty home and started a fire. 50 year old richard alatalo faces arson and burglary charges. police say a witness at a gas station near the house at 16-16 j street southwest saw a man kick in the front door. officers weren't sure if the man was armed, so they surrounded the home with guns drawn. then they arrested alatalo when he ran out through

the back door. police put out a small fire on a bedroom floor. several groups in iowa city plan to protest at the board of regents meeting today. the union called the campaign to organize graduate students is partnering with iowa defending our universities for the protest. they will gather outside where the board of regents meet today at 3 this afternoon. they claim the board is corrupt and doesn't have the best interests of students, faculty, and the community in mind. one of their problems with the board is their appointment of the new university president. the board made bruce harreld the new president last month. they passed up 3 other candidates that had more education experience. harreld says people should give him a chance. he starts as president on november second. today the board of regents ill discuss the final terms of the university of iowa taking over the american institute of business college in des moines. last month, the des moines business record reported that the board of regents considered getting a consultant to determine if des moines was the best location for

a-i-b. an oelwein teacher says a middle school science project saved her life. two students studied how age affects blood pressure. to collect data they asked young children, high school students and some teachers to wear an automated blood pressure cuff. math teacher michelle gearhart says her numbers came back shockingly high. 196 over 110 - a hypertensive crisis according to the american heart association. 15:20:25 "first i went to the school nurse and asked her to check it again, i was sure the numbers were wrong. she agreed, she thought no, that can't be right. so she took it and i think it was even higher when she took it. so i called my doctor and got checked out and it's definitely a problem." gearhart says doctors gave her medicine to lower her numbers while they work to determine the cause. congratulations to our gazette, kcrg-tv9 student of the month - kailin lust. she's a senior at west high

"nobody should be afraid to go to school. no one should fear going down a hallway, going into a classroom, going to a bathroom, being on a bus by themselves, if we have all of the same information and we have a concerted effort to stop that kind of behavior, it will happen. " jelinske says he has adults come up to him after his

talks saying bullying can be felt even in adulthood. he has been traveling to different schools with this message for 12 years. asbury children will soon have a new place to splash and play. the city bought land in 2000 on sanibel lane to create cloie creek park. it will start developing the land into a splash pad, playground area and recreational trail among other things next spring. asbury's mayor says the town has needed something like this for a while. "our park system has not kept up with the growth. we've just, we've got to get this park going. we've got to give people the green space and the amenities, all the quality of life things that we are so proud of in asbury. this is what we are behind in, this is why it's so important to get this done and continue to move forward." this will be the first splash pad in the asbury - dubuque area. asbury will start taking bids this fall for the various projects in the park. it's expected to be finished by june.
