we do thank you for joining us on this final friday here in october. of course, we're going to get started with the very serious news coming out of fort lauderdale. >> the jetliner on fire there on a runway at the airport in south florida. >> we've gotten some new video from fort lauderdale that show the black smoke billowing from the plane while passengers exit on emergency slides, then sprint away from the burning aircraft. frightening images as an intense investigation gets under way. abc's linzie janis has the details. >> reporter: passengers frantically fleeing this burning jetliner, sliding down emergency evacuation chutes. >> i heard a loud bang, turned around, saw the lights, saw flames. ran for the front of the aircraft. >> reporter: at that point, the jet was still moving toward takeoff. flight attendants springing into action. >> he calmly as soon as the plane stopped, he opened the door, let the chute out, the chute opened to the side where the flames were.

just after 12:30. within two minutes, broward sheriff fire and rescue are there. a minute later all 101 on board are off the jet. within another 60 seconds, foam has knocked down the largest flames. >> all passengers are off the aircraft and the engine fire is out. >> reporter: i was scared, says this passenger who hurt her ankle running. at least 21 injured in all. including at least one serious injury. the dynamic airways jet was taxiing to take off to venezuela. what the pilot of the 767 didn't realize is that the jet was leaking fuel over the taxiways. another pilot seeing the leak. >> dynamic out of the left engine, looks like it's leaking a lot of -- i don't know if it's fuel, it has fluid leaking out of the left engine. >> okay, dynamic 405, do you copy? >> yes, sir, we copy. we'll probably need 0 go back to the ramp. >> about ten seconds later, that

fuel ignites. >> engine's on fire. engine's on fire. >> those few moments of panic gave way to a mystery. why was it leaking fuel? >> it sounds very much to me like the culprit may be a fuel line in the engine because fuel was seen spilling out of the engine and rapidly ignited. >> reporter: that plane with the red tail still on the tarmac and it will likely be here for many more hours. but the emergency evacuation is being called textbook. it could have been so much worse. linzie janis, abc news, fort lauderdale, florida. >> federal investigators want to know what caused a plane crash that killed four in arkansas outside of little rock. no one on the ground was injured. the small plane crashed shortly after takeoff and burst into flames. investigators say it was foggy when the plane went down. >> an american airlines made an emergency landing because of a passenger. the flight from los angeles to philadelphia diverted to phoenix. a man was arrested there and taken for psychiatric

evaluation. passengers say he had gotten up from his seat during the flight and ranted about the military, the government and 9/11. >> the poor guy needs help. i mean, but he scared the hell out of everybody. i think he scared me because you know, we didn't know at first if he had somebody with him and he was very hostile to people with money. >> other passengers and the flight crew took the man back to his seat until the jet landed in phoenix. there were 153 passengers and six crew members on board. they arrived in philadelphia about seven hours late. terror in the air for a peruvian sky diver, his ordeal captured on camera as he dangles in the air for 30 minutes. his jumpsuit caught on plane. he was finally cut the legs off of his jumpsuit with a knife and parachuted to the ground and landed safely. incredibly, his only injury was a minor cut to his hand. >> that's absolutely amazing. >> quick thinking. turning to politics now, republican presidential hopeful jeb bush is doing damage control

one day after what many political insiders feel was a disastrous debate for him. jeb bush denies his campaign is "terminal." bush told an interviewer just saying that is pretty funny. he points out there are still about 100 days before the new hampshire primary. he's on the defensive about the way he's conducting his campaign though. >> i will campaign the way that i will govern. i will campaign with my arms wide open. with a hopeful optimistic message, not one that is trying to prey on people's fears. >> but in a private conference call to nervous donors yesterday afternoon, bush reportedly admitted he was -- he has to do better. fellow republican chris christie is facing trouble. today's "new york times" editorial board is telling the governor his campaign is terminal and it's time to go. now, vice president joe

the first class cabin and began making threatening statements even mentioning september 11th. other passengers and flight crew put him back in the seat till police took him off in phoenix. the flight arrived hours late in philadelphia. breaking news from kentucky where the search for an armed and dangerous fugitive is over. police say floyd cook was shot and killed after he refused to comply with the officers' demands. the convicted robber and rapist had been the subject of an intense manhunt for the past week. he was last spotted yesterday afternoon when he asked a resident for a ride. american military jets were forced to scramble because of the russians. the white house says russian bombers flew near the aircraft carrier "u.s.s. ronald reagan." the ship was conducting military exercises in the sea of japan. russia's military has been reminded to follow international protocol. and secretary of state john kerry is in vienna, austria

and the victim of an apparent game of sexual conquest spoke out in court. abc's marci gonzalez has more. >> reporter: owen labrie, the former prep school student convicted this summer of sex crimes against a 15-year-old school mate sentenced to a year in jail plus probation. >> this is a case where lives have been destroyed, yours and the victim's. >> this was a mission for him. this was a sexual conquest. and it was a game. >> reporter: the victim not in the courtroom but in a recorded statement pleaded for justice. tearfully describing the lasting impact of the assault. we have distorted her voice to protect her identity. >> what he did to me made me feel like i didn't belong on this planet. and that i would be better off dead. >> prosecutors allege the 2014 assault at the prestigious st. paul school in new hampshire was part of a so-called senior salute.

labrie who maintains he did not have sex with the victim was acquitted of the most serious forcible rape charges but the jury found him guilty of other charges including luring a minor by a computer which is a felony. the now 20-year-old lost his acceptance to harvard. his mother saying he spent four days on suicide watch. she wrote to the judge he has been punished beyond a degree that anyone else could possibly understand. after the hearing, labrie had to rescue as a very much offender. he was then allowed to go home and he will remain free on bail while his attorneys appeal. kendis and reena. >> thank you so much. an elderly kentucky man is recovering after spending five days trapped in his car. police say wilbur herod went off an embankment earlier this week. frustrated family member searched area roadways without any luck. then a driver happened to spot the car wednesday just in the nick of time. >> to me somewhat of a miracle he was spotted because i don't believe in his age and his medical condition he would have

made it up to the roadway. >> the driver was dehydrated when rescuers found him but he was alert and able to talk to them. a 10-year-old in hawaii says the shark that bit him popped out of nowhere. the youngster is recovering in a hospital this morning with several wounds to his leg. he says he kicked the shark in the nose and that he wasn't afraid. abc's matt gutman with more. >> reporter: the shark attack volting the boy boogie boarding off hawaii clear out of the surf. >> i saw a kid get lifted out of the water. >> reporter: another body boarder's go pro capturing the attack in the distance. off duty lifeguard kelly crohn paddling to the boy noticing the deep gashes in his thigh. >> i gave the distress signal to the lifeguards that something was up. >> reporter: it was the seventh shark attack in hawaii this year. last week, tony lee was pulled under by a tiger shark.

nancy pelosi says the embodiment of the american dream. federal investigators are now looking into why an airline jet engine caught fire just before takeoff. an engine on a dynamic airways jet was leaking fuel. then the engine went up in flames. the plane was heading to venezuela from fort lauderdale. 110 people were forced to evacuate down emergency slides. 21 were injured. one seriously. the flames were put out quickly as you can see there. the airport was closed, however, for several hours. records indicate the plane was last inspected in june. crews recovering all the parts of that military surveillance blimp that broke free is expected to go on again today. workers removed the sensitive electronics. questions remain why it got loose in the first place. abc's linsey davis reports. >> reporter: an active investigation and recovery mission tonight of what remains of this $175 million balloon, now deflated and pierced with 100 bullet holes. >> you may have heard shotgun shots.

that is how we are deflating it. >> reporter: this wild ride. >> somebody might ought to call 911. >> reporter: now, the herculean recovery effort begins, as they attempt to return this 10,000-plus pound balloon back to maryland. this 240-foot blimp detaching from a maryland military base, reaching altitudes as high as 16,000 feet. dragging a 6,600-foot metal cable behind it, knocking out power to nearly 30,000 customers. floating unmanned at about 50 miles per hour for a 160-mile journey to these pennsylvania woods. >> look at the size of that thing. >> reporter: this blimp, paid for with taxpayer dollars now tattered, torn, and twisted. it's part of a nearly $3 billion test system now being used to defend the nation's capital against airborne attacks, with technology designed to find low-flying, fast-moving, small threats. but some argue it's too expensive and ineffective. >> something this expensive, this sophisticated should never have been able to just drift away. but this is a program that the

congress has kept alive even though the pentagon wants to get rid of it. >> reporter: the army says the most sensitive equipment has already been removed from the woods right behind me. the rest is expected to come out in a day or so likely by to oklahoma city where a police officer accused of punching a high school student is facing charges. the incident is from a few weeks ago but captured on surveillance video. the veteran officer claims he struck the 16-year-old in self-defense. a police spokesman says the officer's response was not appropriate. and is on paid administrative leave and faces misdemeanor assault as well as battery charges. a look at the deadly shoot-out in the waco, texas, video leaked shows the moment of chaos and terror. here's ryan owens. >> reporter: as the cases against more than 100 bikers involved in a motorcycle gang shootout at this waco, texas,

restaurant move forward, a stunning new look at the action in a series of videos apparently leaked from the case file. in one video, the gun fire erupts just offcamera, but watch the reaction of the bikers. some grab guns, others hit the floor and crawl to safety. one surveillance camera catches a biker firing a shot toward the parking lot as he runs inside. the videos obtained by cnn appear to be part of the evidence, after the shootout left nine dead and 18 injured. waco police say they did not release the surveillance videos and whoever did may be in legal trouble. the videos also show terrified twin peaks employees running for cover. minutes later, a parade of bikers surrendering with their hands up. these videos are being made public just as the grand jury down in waco hears all of the cases against all of those bikers. and that's why police and the prosecutor are so upset. they're worried this leak could

affect the outcome. ryan owens, abc news, dallas. to southern california where there was quite a shock for a man there. he discovered a five-foot python in a dumpster. the snake was near death after spending the night outside an apartment building. investigators say the person who abandoned the snake could be charged with animal cruelty. the reptile is now recuperating at an animal shelter in riverside county. it will be turned over to a rescue operation because exotic animals are not put up for adoption here. that's why i don't take out the trash. >> it's a good reason not to take out the trash. honey, i'm sorry. >> there could be a python there. during a different half-hour of "world news now" yesterday morning, we told that you kittens would be taking over offices across the country. >> well, that did happen. they were brought to workplaces in 55 cities. someone in those offices made

a los angeles woman is terrified after catching her neighbor setting her minivan on fire. security cameras capturing the scene there. she walks up to the minivan and pours lighter fluid on it. a few hours later the neighbor returns and tries again. felicia mcdaniel says she and the neighbor were once friends but police and fire departments

are now investigating. convicted child molester jerry sandusky wants a new trial. he argues his lawyers were not effective during his trial and that his rights were violated. his court appearance yesterday follows reports of leaks of grand jury testimony in his case. the judge now investigating and wants a state attorney general to turn over any information. now to another high-profile case of sexual assault on campus ended with a judge describing the defendant as neither an angel or a devil but still guilty. >> a case of a former top student of an elite new england prep school once headed to harvard now headed to prison. abc's gio benitez has the story. >> reporter: 20-year-old owen labrie saying a quiet prayer at his sentencing today, convicted in august for sexually assaulting a 15-year-old freshman girl in the dark science building of their elite prep school. the victim breaking down on the stand. we are distorting her voice. >> i was raped. i was violated in so many ways.

>> reporter: prosecutors argued it was part of a so-called school tradition, the senior salute. graduating seniors spending time with younger students. sometimes intimately. they claimed labrie was trying to rack up sexual conquests as part of a game. the jury acquitted him of the most serious charge felony rape but found him guilt of misdemeanor sexual assault and of using e-mail and facebook to lure the underage girl. his victim in a video statement, today saying shy -- she has been harassed for coming forward. >> what he did to me made me feel like i didn't belong on this planet and that i would be better off dead. >> reporter: labrie says he never forced himself on the girl. his mother begging for mercy. the defense submitting pictures of him as a young boy and visiting harvard, where, they say, he planned to study divinity. the judge calling labrie a very good liar, saying his 15-year-old victim was not able to consent. >> that's the crime you were convicted of.

engaging in sexual penetration with someone who is not old enough to know how to handle it. >> reporter: labrie faced 11 years behind bars, but was sentenced to one. afterwards, embracing his family with a smile. and owen labrie is actually out on bail as he pursues an appeal, but did he have to officially register as a sex offender. he could be on that list for the rest of his life. gio benitez, concord, new hampshire. >> prosecutors say they're considering other charges against him including for deleting 119 incriminating messages sent between him and friends. >> the victim's family had an impact statement. the father, the victim's father say, "my little girl stood up to the rape culture that allows boys to be boys." they were saying that was part of the culture at that school. sad case all around. >> absolutely. coming up, the one question that many parents can't answer. >> that is, what did your child wear to school today?
