of another government shutdown even after we have a new president. presidential candidates, senators ted cruz and rand paul, led the opposition against the bill this morning. an unusually high number of small town elections will have no names on the ballots on tuesday. dubuque county auditor denise dolan says a change in state law means candidates now file their paper work at their county auditor's office instead of with their city clerk. that meant some candidates missed the filing deadline. holy cross, for example, has three vacant city council seats, and no names on the ballot. but city leaders say at least two people are running as write-ins. dolan says calculating those write in votes will mean more work on election night. "and then they start going through the ballots and they have to start keeping track of who's who and how many votes and it always delays us getting the returns out. " dolan plans to urge state lawmakers to change the

this cedar rapids man has pleaded guilty to lascivious acts with a child for sexually abusing a 13- year-old girl in 2013. 44 year old troy davenport admitted to fondling or touching the girl. the charge carries a sentence of up to 10 years in prison. but a plea agreement says the state will recommend a suspended sentence and probation. davenport has already been in jail for two years pending trial. the judge has not set a date for sentencing. in a tv-9 follow-up this morning.. prosecutors are charging an arlington man for colliding with a school bus near manchester earlier this month. police have charged 41 year old monte klink with serious injury by vehicle and second offense o-w-i. the state patrol says klink didn't yield at the intersection of 195th street and 200th avenue, three miles north of manchester. his s-u-v hit a west delaware school bus carrying 32 students. the bus rolled over, and all the students had to go to the manchester

hospital for evaluation before they went home with their parents. no one had life threatening injuries. the new university of iowa president - bruce harreld - starts his job on monday. state regents and the university of iowa spent at least 308-thousand dollars in the presidential search. that includes a 200-thousand dollar service charge to parker executive search, the firm regents used for the search. other expenses - which include advertising for the position - have reached more than 108- thousand dollars. the regents and the university say the numbers aren't final, as more expenses could come in. the regents chose harreld - a businessman - to replace sally mason. since then, several student and faculty groups have expressed concern over the selection, saying the three other finalists in the search are more qualified for position. iowa city police are warning parents, trick-or-treaters, and football fans to be careful this weekend. that's because trick-or-treaters will hit the street, around the same time the iowa hawkeye football game ends.

iowa city police say they plan to have extra officers focusing on this part of town around that time. about 65 to 70 thousand people are expected to be at the game. university heights actually moved their trick-or-treat date to tonight to avoid this situation. the game time wasn't announced by the big ten conference until october 19th. police say they have concerns as alcohol might be a factor for some fans. they say if you live in this area, consider trick-or- treating somewhere else for the night. "alarms.... engine's on fire! engine's on fire!" passengers sliding down the burning planes evacuation chutes... then running to safety. i heard a loud bang, turned around saw the lights, saw flames... ran to the fron of the aircraft.

the dynamic airways jet is taxiing for departure to venezuela. another pilot on the tarmac... spots the problem. other pilot: dynamic is, out of the left engine , it looks like it's leaking a lot of? i don't know if it's fuel, it's fluid leaking out of the left engine. tower: okay dynamic, 4058, do you copy? pilot: uh, yes sir, we copy. we'll probably need to go back, to the, um ramp. but just 10 seconds later... the fuel ignites. i heard a bump and heard screaming running to front. it's flames all over. within three minutes, all 101 on board are off the jet. in another minute... the largest flames... knocked down. "all passengers are off the aircraft and the engine fire is out" at least 21 passengers are hurt, mostly from bumps or falls during evacuation. airport officials tout their quick response... as the ntsb and faa investigate this extremely close call. we averted a disaster today.
