[ gunfire ] you hear the end to it all there. it began with a domestic violence call. police were met with gunfire at the apartment. streets were closed off. nearby schools went into lockdown.

at the airport. the suspect eventually tossed his weapons out of a window and surrendered. and in central california, a college student is dead after he apparently stabbed four other people on campus two of his victims were injured seriously enough to be airlifted to the hospital. the attacker was shot and killed by police. students at the university of california-merced are in shock. they never expected something like this at their small rural campus. the motive is unknown. classes today have been canceled. >> more disturbing allegations following that staged suicide but a chicago area police officer. sources tell our chicago station that the widow and son of joe gliniewicz are under criminal investigation. it apparently stems from the money that gliniewicz was embezzling from the police explorer unit he ran with his wife and several others. investigators say he spent the money on mortgage payments, ravel and porn websites. >> gliniewicz committed the ultimate betrayal to the citizens he served and the

code 11, barricaded suspect, apartment 610. >> rounds came out from a room or a bathroom in the apartment, through a door. nearly hitting the officer. so, we're talking within inches of hitting the officer. >> more rounds going off. we're going to need some shields or something so we can get out of here safely. >> reporter: the shooter's ex-girlfriend who lives in the apartment was not home. tom next door was hiding in his bathroom. >> i was scared. i was definitely scared. >> reporter: darnell de palma stuck with her dog, filming the scene from a balcony. 10:15 a.m., the faa orders a full ground stop at san diego international airport. the shooter is hunkered down less than a mile from the approach end of runway 27. 1:30 p.m., a commotion, we're told it's tear gas fired into the apartment. an hour later, five hours after this standoff began, police report suspect in custody. the man in custody, 33-year-old titus colbert.

shots fired, near misses, but no injuries reported. nick watt, abc news, san diego. all right. now to the other major headline we're following this morning. word from british and american officials that a bomb is likely to blame for the crash of the russian passenger jet in egypt. counter-terrorism officials say new intelligence leads them to believe it was more likely explosives than a mechanical issue. the uk is scrambling to get 20,000 of its tourists back home after halting flights in and out of sharm el sheikh. >> terror groups operating in the region have been working extremely hard to develop explosives that can be smuggled on to an airplane undetected. >> all 224 people on board were killed in that crash. intelligence officials have acknowledged that isis may be responsible as it has repeatedly claimed. new details in that phoenix to new york flight diverted due

for threatening to kill passengers when he was refused a beer. the pilot made an emergency landing in wichita because of the incident on tuesday night. questions remain whether the woman accused of crashing into a homecoming parade is competent to stand trial. the 25-year-old woman has been charged with second degree murder. police say she drove into a crowd of people at the oklahoma state university parade last month. four people were killed and dozens injured. a psychologist hired by her attorneys say she's not competent to stand trial. the story in chicago just gets more stunning. and a stunning new twist in the death of that illinois police officer that attracted national attention. investigators say joe gliniewicz committed suicide staging it like a murder. he was about to be arrested for embezzling thousands of dollars. now we're getting word that his widow and son are under criminal investigation. abc's alex perez is there. >> reporter: the manhunt, massive. choppers in the air, police going door to door, hunting for

three men they believed killed lieutenant charles joseph gliniewicz. it began the morning of september 1st. lieutenant gliniewicz radios in saying he is pursuing three suspicious individuals. >> 10-4. did you need a second unit? >> 10-4. go ahead and start somebody. >> reporter: minutes later, police discover him dead. >> send everybody you possibly can. officer is down. >> reporter: the community is shaken. gliniewicz, nicknamed g.i. joe, was a husband and father of four. >> joe was my best friend, my world, my hero. >> reporter: hundreds of officers from all across the country attend his funeral. and it wasn't until october 1st, one month after lieutenant gliniewicz was found dead here at the scene that authorities revealed he was killed with his own gun, but they were still investigating the case primarily as a homicide. >> good morning. >> reporter: investigators revealed it wasn't murder at all. that the lieutenant staged his

even shooting himself twice, once under his bullet proof vest. they say he was about to be exposed as a thief for stealing thousands of dollars from a youth program run by the police department, spending it on mortgage payments, personal trips, gym memberships and even adult websites. >> gliniewicz committed the ultimate betrayal to the citizens he served and the entire law enforcement community. >> reporter: and police reportedly spent more than $300,000 on that manhunt and investigation. the family of lieutenant gliniewicz calls this another day of deep sorrow. alex perez, abc news, fox lake, illinois. >> an alabama boy missing for the past 13 years has been located in cleveland where he had been living with his father. >> julian hernandez was 5 years old when his mother reported him missing. she suspected he had been taken by his father but it took more than a decade to track him down after a social security number turned up bogus. the father has been charged with abduction. >> one former president bush

>> we do say good morning to you on this thursday morning. i'm kendis gibson. >> i'm reena ninan. we begin with the strong implications of terrorism in that air disaster in egypt. >> this after intelligence officials are now saying the russian jet that broke apart mid-air and crashed in the egyptian desert was likely brought down by a bomb. the british took immediate action spending all of its flights to and from the sinai peninsula. then the irish followed suit. for from abc's brian ross. >> reporter: counterterrorism officials tonight say new intelligence makes them believe it was more likely that a bomb, not a mechanical issue, brought down the russian jetliner. seen in this new video taken moments after the crash. >> we have concluded that there is a significant possibility that that crash was caused by an explosive device on board the aircraft. >> reporter: officials in egypt say investigators are looking for evidence that passengers in the back of the plane may have had injuries from an explosion

bodies as indication where a bomb might have been hidden. within hours of the crash a group claimed responsibility. now the group has become the prime suspect and they have posted a second claim of responsibility. the russian flight left saturday from the sharm el-sheik airport in egypt where all flights to and from britain were suspended after officials told abc news they found lax security there. >> terror groups working in the region have been working extremely hard to develop explosives that can be smuggled on to an airplane undetected. >> reporter: as u.s. and british officials have demonstrated, small amounts of explosives can cause cas catastrophic damage to a fuselage be. >> in milliseconds, the aircraft would basically break apart. >> reporter: even before the 9/11 attacks, passenger planes had long been and remain a prime target of terrorists.

in 1988 killing 270 people. al qaeda has since tried unsuccessfully with bombs hidden in underwear, a shoe and printer cartridges. for u.s. authorities, the concern is whether terrorists have developed a new explosive that can not be can detected by standard security procedures what they call the nightmare scenario. brian ross, abc news, new york. >> this really is a big deal. nearly a million british tourists visit egypt every year. the decision to ground the uk flights has left up to 20,000 of them stranded in sharm el sheikh. officials are now working to get them home on other flights. the government is advising against nonessential travel to that airport. now to the violence in this country. a five-hour standoff is over in san diego.
