you. i'm kendis gibson. >> i'm reena ninan. we begin with the latest on that doomed russian passenger jet in egypt. british and american officials now saying a bomb is likely to be blamed. >> those intelligence officials are leaning heavily toward an act of terrorism as the cause of that crash, even though the official investigation is far from over. more now from abc's stephanie ramos. >> reporter: families grieve. bodies identified. all while egyptian authorities lead the investigation into what caused a russian passenger jet to break apart in the sky over the sinai desert. all 224 people headed back home to russia killed. now, u.s. and british officials say new preliminary information shows it is more likely a bomb, not a mechanical issue that brought down the russian jet seen in this new video taken moments after the crash. >> we must suspend flights to sharm el sheik and advise against all but essential travel

the voice and data recorders from the jet are now being analyzed by russian, egyptian and other international teams. the cockpit voice recorder is partially damaged but investigators are working to get as much information from it as they can. back to you. >> reporter: a lot of people want to know what impact isis has in the sinai desert. the sinaigh has a lot of extremists and they had for many years pledged allegianceton al qaeda because that was their big funder. with al qaeda the way it is today, isis growing and having much more financial means, they've claimed allegiance to isis. a lot of people say isis has never had such a super strong hold in the sinai. so it will be interesting to see what comes out through intelligence of just how far their reach is and also in the past, al qaeda groups have been able to take down very, very small low flying helicopter. one incident actually. but to take down a jet through a shoulder fired missile, they're

saying it's like a bomb of some sort. >> it's not possible above 26,000 feet. they believe isis doesn't have the that sort of equipment. it is still a very volatile region though. >> it definitely is. but the good news for us here in america. u.s. airlines, faa saying that they are not taking any special precautions here. intelligence not indicating there's reason to be concerned on domestic flights. so that's good. we are going to move on to breaking news overnight in the mystery in the dark waters off new york city. a 911 call about a downed small plane sparked a huge search. that plane finally found by police and fire units. the pilot was killed. his single engine aircraft had taken off from philadelphia and was headed to portsmith, new hampshire. a five-hour stand off in san diego caused chaos and the closure of the international airport. [ gunfire ] you hear the end to it all there. it began with a domestic violence call. police were met with gunfire at the apartment. streets were closed off. nearby schools went into lockdown.

at the airport. the suspect eventually tossed his weapons out of a window and surrendered. and in central california, a college student is dead after he apparently stabbed four other people on campus two of his victims were injured seriously enough to be airlifted to the hospital. the attacker was shot and killed by police. students at the university of california-merced are in shock. they never expected something like this at their small rural campus. the motive is unknown. classes today have been canceled. >> more disturbing allegations following that staged suicide but a chicago area police officer. sources tell our chicago station that the widow and son of joe gliniewicz are under criminal investigation. it apparently stems from the money that gliniewicz was embezzling from the police explorer unit he ran with his wife and several others. investigators say he spent the money on mortgage payments, ravel and porn websites. >> gliniewicz committed the ultimate betrayal to the citizens he served and the

three men they believed killed lieutenant charles joseph gliniewicz. it began the morning of september 1st. lieutenant gliniewicz radios in saying he is pursuing three suspicious individuals. >> 10-4. did you need a second unit? >> 10-4. go ahead and start somebody. >> reporter: minutes later, police discover him dead. >> send everybody you possibly can. officer is down. >> reporter: the community is shaken. gliniewicz, nicknamed g.i. joe, was a husband and father of four. >> joe was my best friend, my world, my hero. >> reporter: hundreds of officers from all across the country attend his funeral. and it wasn't until october 1st, one month after lieutenant gliniewicz was found dead here at the scene that authorities revealed he was killed with his own gun, but they were still investigating the case primarily as a homicide. >> good morning. >> reporter: investigators revealed it wasn't murder at all. that the lieutenant staged his
