longtime cedar falls mayor jon crews is stepping down rather than trying to win a run-off election. crews has served cedar falls for 30 of the last 44 years. but tuesday's election put crews in a run-off with businessman jim brown. neither candidate was able to get the 50 percent needed to secure the position. crews sent out a news release yesterday saying a majority of voters did not support him voters office marking the end of his 16th term. mayoral terms in cedar falls run 2 years. crews reached out on the cedar falls board of education - to inform him of his decision. transition. "i've run 3 runoff and i was behind before and so it's not like i haven't done this before but it's no guarantee but it's hard and it was going to be a tough runoff. 4 more weeks of

" there is another variable at play. dave halterman received 20 percent support on tuesday - good for third place. he's not on the runoff ballot, but given crews' retirement, halterman told tv-9 that will he will be in the race as a write in candidate. a recount is over for a city council seat in university heights. johnson county auditor travis weipert ordered the recount after two candidates finished within one vote of each other tuesday night. jerry zimmerman is now the winner, beating stephanie gahn. university heights had the highest voter turnout in all of johnson county tuesday night at nearly 57 percent. the mayor and homeless protestors in cedar rapids are working together to solve some issues. this group started protesting

hall wednesday night after they were kicked out of a park. when mayor ron corbett heard they wanted to meet with him, he set up time for a meeting. the protesters talked about their frustrations and the lack of beds in cedar rapids, and the inability to get an id. mayor corbett says he can't do anything overnight, but police will help them find a place to stay. "i think we opened the mayors eyes to basically a problem he didn't realize was as big as it was. i think we got him to sit down and think a little bit more about the homeless population. " the executive director of the willis dady emergency shelter says the service agencies that help the homeless in cedar rapids will announce a plan on tuesday for an emergency shelter. this shelter will provide extra beds for the homeless as temperatures drop. a group that opposes an oil pipeline across iowa says the state utilities board is limiting public

the utilities board will hold a hearing next week on the proposed pipeline that would run through iowa, carrying oil from north dakota to illinois. because so many people want to comment, the board is limiting the number to just over 200. half of the speakers will be supporters, the other half will be opponents.... each getting just two minutes to speak. the iowa citizens for community improvement says that creates a false illusion of opinion on the project. " nathan 3:44 it paints the illusion that the number of folks who are opposed is equal to the number of supporters which isn't the case. " cecil 17:18 splitting it 50/50 seemed to be the fairest way to provide both sides to speak at the public hearing." the utilities board will decide in the next couple of months on whether to allow the pipeline to cut through 18 counties in the state. iowa livestock farmers are concerned the trade deal called the trans-pacific partnership will be good for businesses but bad for workers. officials released the details of that plan yesterday. the deal is between 12 pacific

nations and is aimed at freeing up commerce in 40 percent of the world's economy. the white house says the deal will increase u-s exports and protect american workers. congress must still approve the agreement. iowa already exports nine billion dollars worth or 60 percent of its goods to nations in the t-p-p. the trade deal would also reduce export taxes on many iowa products. those include pork, which would see a 388 percent reduction, and beef, which would see a 50 percent reduction. legislation against expanding the "water of the u-s" rule is on its way to the house for approval. iowa senator joni ernst was among the u-s senators who voted against it on wednesday. ernst says the bill would have given the environmental protection agency and other governing agencies too much control over bodies of water in the country. other senators including chuck grassley agreed with her and say the bill had more to do with control than water quality. "i'm proud to stand with the majority of my colleagues in voting to scrap it. the senate

" grassley and ernst say this is a win for farmers, ranchers and manufacturer s. the iowa department of natural resources is about to release 2 thousand trout into the prairie park fishery in cedar rapids. and the anglers will be right coming right after them. they've held this event for four years. once in the fall. once around late winter, early spring when they tag trout and host a competition. this is part of the state's urban fish program. it's popularity has reached an all-time high. more people than ever before have purchased the stamps

needed to fish trout. 13 dollars for residents, 15 dollars for non-residents according to the dnr's website. trout stocking, like what you'll see today, happens at more than 15 locations around the state. according to officials the program got it start because the state wanted to bring more fish species to more people. " the urban fishery program, in the state of iowa, was created to get more interest in local fishing. you don't have to drive to northern iowa. today, the department of homeland security is expected to call for heightened security at strategic foreign airports that have direct flights to the u.s. this after reports that terrorists were likely responsible for placing an explosive device on a russian plane that crashed in egypt, killing all 224 people aboard. this plane crash would be the worst attack since 9/11 if it is proved to be terrorism. other security measures being discussed include more baggage screenings, and to include matching of luggage to manifest lists before takeoff. investigators say a fox lake, illinois, officer who staged his suicide tried to have a village administrator killed. police say that's because lieutenant charles gliniewicz thought the administrator would find out that he had embezzling money from a police program. police say he shot
