healthier than this, a nororl weight body with a so-called beer belly which doubles the mortality risk. it's called normal weight central obesitit the tutd di of more than 15,000 people found the spare tire is responsible for more total and cardiovascular death. >> it's tucked next to your organs and feeding them toxins, this is the riskiest fat in your body. >> reporter: there's one important number to know. your waist to hip ratio. so we turned to abc news nutrition and wellness editor dave zinczenko, author of "the zero belly diet." >> first youou waist, about an inch above your navel, 33 and widest part, 39. >> reporter: 33 combied divided by 39, 0.84. >> as long as you're under 0.9 you're in great shape. >> time to put on fake pounds. add a few inches which is not goinggo happen.

see it so we're looking ging for non noninvasive ways to measure it. >> what's the best way to get rid of it? >> exactly. that's the silver lining in this whole thing is that there is a lot you can do even though you can't see this fat to kind of pro-vent it and reduce it from having an impact on you. the first thing is exercise. more is better. different kinds of exercise are important. you want to mix up cardio with believe it or not resistance or weights and really want to get that in six days a week. the way you eat, that's key. so you want toend to go for a indict et low in saturated fat and sugar and it's never toooo late to correct bad dietary habits then, of course, in the pharmaceutical world there is drugs in the pipeline and research and development that will just hopefully target visceral fat. >> when we talk about bmi, body mass index, everybody -- all the confusion about it. this study seems to indicate that other factors are more important. >> they are. and remember that in medicine when we look at one thing, it's never just one thing. we're lookinggt a constellation

>> incredible.today, a man who shot a dubuque police officer will appear in court for re- sentencing. 77-year-old eddie chest pleaded guilty for the shooting during an armed robbery in 20- 09. as part of the plea agreement, prosecutors agreed to recommend that chest serve two 25- year terms concurrently. instead, a judge e ast year sentenced chest to serve the terms consecutively , resulting in a 50-year sentence. last month, the iowa court of appeals overturned that sentence, saying prosecutors didn't push the judge to consider he lighter sentence.

whatever that means and now they're using words like diabetes, obesity, cholesterol and saying fit all the time. i had no idea -- >> and healthy. and i saw and i heard compassion. >> yes, there was. they're having a better understanding of what actually healthy means. i don't know if i understood exactly what that meant when i was their age and it's a really good thing but there's still a -- i don't know, it was very interesting to hear their perception. >> in fact, you gaveves a picture of yourself when you were 12. >> yes. >> you touched on this but how did you perceive yourself and in relative terms to what you heard from these young women? >> when i was 12 years old i only knew what skinny was and i knew what fat was. i had no idea what fit was and i think you can tell they're being educated now. they're bei educated to understand that obesity can lead to all of the diseases that they were naming off. >> right, and you also brought along an unretouched photo of yourself to the girls. >> yes. >> you posted on your social

>> have a great day.sheriff's offices are preparing to see an influx of people looking to renew their permit to carry weapons. that't' because of a law that went into effect a few years ago. on january first of 2011, this new law required sheriff's offices toissue permits to all applicants unless they met certain isqualifiers.. before that, authorities could issue permits at their discretion. the new iowa law led to a wave of new permits. in 20-10, iowa auttorities issuee around 39-thousand permits to the public. in 20-11 - after the law took effect - authorities issued more than 101- thousand permits to carry weapons. the new law said the permit was good for five years, so many start to expire at the beginning of 2016. but people who want to new need to do so at least 30 days prior to the expiration date on the card, so for some people thatts coming very quickly. the renewaa process also

has a training requirement. we posted some more information about the rules with this story on kcrg dot com. and now here's your first alert forecast. plan on annther nice one all acacss eastern iowa. temperatures will be slightly warmer with highs innthe middle and uppee 50s area-wide. more clouds will build tonight setting us up for our next area of low pressure that will impact iowa on wednesday. most of the area qill see rain by the afternoon and evening hours with thunderstorm s also possible. given how strong this low pressure system is, we may have a few strong storms within all this as well. there is a risk of severe weather over southern iowa, and much of this will hinge on how much sun we see as to whether severe storms will materialize or not. we'll be monitoring it closely. moving
