the central city fire department is investigating damage at a house that caught fire. several fire deartments responded to 22-hundred central city road around 8-30 last night. the central city fire chief told tv-9 no one was hurt. we're working on trying to find out how much daage there is and how the fire started. stay with tv-9 and kcrg dot com for updates. there was a lototf opposition to a proposed weapons ban on city property in north liberty, last night. dozens of people packed the city council chambers during a meeting to urge members not to pass the resolution. kcrg-tv's forrest saunders joins us at the desk this morning. forrest, a lot of the tension was because people were confused about the resolution. that's right guys. according to the mayor, a lot of people thoughhthis was a city-wide weapons ban. but instead, the resolution would only prohibit firearms on city property. this is the second time the council has looked at the ban, since 2013. it's become an extremely hot

topic. the mayor said council members have received more than 300 messages on the matter. she said some were quote "inappropriate and foul". last nigh, the resolution faced more stiff oppositioio. during public comment, opponents called the ban dangerous, that it would make public spaces unsafe.,one man shared a story of when he used his weapon to protect himself. " 16:6:6:00 what would happen if i didn't have a pistol - whether it be private property, city property, government owned property or who cares what kind of property it is. i wouldn't be here today." this follows the release of a video that showed a white police officer shooting and killing a black teenager. innhe dashboarr cameraaideo from october of last year, you can see the officer shooting 17- year-old laquan mcdonald 16 times. he later died from those injuries. the officer jason van dyke now facc first degree mmder charges. "the officer in this case took a young man's life and he's going to have to account for his actions." got a call about a man with a knife trying to break into vehicles. police say when mcdonald ignored orders to drop theknife-- van dyke sttrted shooting. the investigation shows van dyke was on scene for less than 30 seconds before he started shooting. entered through mcdonald's back. sure iowa's doors are open to refugees from alll countries. they protested outside the state capitol hoping governor branstad will reverse his stance on syrian refugees.

after the errorist attacks on paris, branstad ordered all state agencies to stop work on resettling syrian refugees. critics of his decision accuse him of fer mongering. they say thhy want to make a statement that promotes human rights. iowa city's emergency winter shelter. this year, it will be run out of this building that southgate companies owns. it's near shelter house, he main homeless shelter. " it's a tremendous relief, now we are just eager to proceed honestly, we were concerned that the costs were going to be prohibitive and we wouldn't be able to make it this year, but southgate came fofoward, they were able to donate the space free of rent, and so like i said, we're really relieved and anxious to start moving forward with the program. " they are still looking to raise about 30-thhsand 70-thousand dollar project open for 13 weeks this winter. shelter house hopes to open this location by mid december. donations to an annuallelethon will helppfeed eastern iowa's seniors. kcrg-tv9 and the heritage ready to hold the "fill the plate" telethon next month. these people are enjoying an early thanksgiving meal at the c cmmunity center, but they're also celebrating the re-opening of the ely senior dining program. the funding from the

sponsored meal program. it closed because of cost, and governmenn funding is not going up. getting together a couple of times a week is important to these seniors. "they come for the meal, but it's more than the meal. it's again the companionship, feeling part of a family, feeling apart of the community." this year's "fill the plate" telethon will be from 5:00 to 9:00 on sunday, decemberrsixth. you can watch it live on kcrg nine point two. all of the money will benefit the heritage agency on aging's regional nutrition program. that provides hundreds of thousands of meals to eastern iowaas at-riskkenior citizens. a dubuque family spent the day delivering more than one hundred thanksgiving meals to people in need. it was all to honor the memory of their 8 year old son. last november, jackson hohman unexpectedlylydied from an undiagnosed intestinal problem. his mom, angie, says her son loved to help people and especially loved to serve thanksgiving meals to those in need. so yesterday, his family delivered more than 110
