the president's speech. he had discussed many of these proposals previously. aides say these remarks and their tone were important to president, who worked on the speech throughout the weekend. >> the threat from terrorism is real. but we will overcome it. we'll destroy isil and any other organizationonhat tries to harm us. our success won't depend on tough talk or abandoning our values. or giving in to fear. >> reporter: in a rare primetime oval office address, president obama spoke directly to the american public. >> as commander in chief, i have no greater responsibility than the security of the american people. >> reporter: the president outlined his approach to fight terrorisiss new face. calling on congress to vote to authorize the continued use of military force against isis. >> i think it's time for congress to vote to demonstrate that the american people are united and committed to this fight. >> reporter: he urged legislation that would prevent anyone on the terror watch list from easily buying a gun. and ordered a review of the visa program that allowed the female

shooting to enr the united ates. republican presidential candidates wasted no time responding to the president's speech. on fox, marco rubio said this was more of the same. >> nothing that happened in the speech tonight is going to assuage people's fears. >> reporter: and immediately after the speech, donald trump tweeted, is that all there is? we need a new president fast. in his remarks, the president seemed to anticipate that response. >> even in this political season, let's not forget that freedom is more powerful than fear. >> reporter: and the president addressed muslims directly, enlisting their support in tryingngo help fight back against radicalization. and called on all americans to reject discrimination. reena? richard? >> lana, the president relayed three things he wants from lawmakers. congress to make sure no one on the no-fly list is able to buy a gun. he wants congress to have stronger screening for travelers

and he wants continued use of military force against isis. do you think he can expect cooperation from congress? >> reporter: if the initial response by republicans is any indication, he'll face an uphill battle when it comes to dealing with congreses that very legislation about trying to stop terrorists from allowi anybody on the terrorort watch list to purcrcse a gun actually failed in the senate just a few days ago. of those three things, the one most likely to get bipartisan support is probably tougher screenings for anyone wanting to come to the united states. reena? richard? >> okay, lana zak, live in washington. thank you so much, lana. >> thank you. san bernardino public health employees are returning to work this morning for the first time since their colleagues were killed in n e shooting rampage. >> several who made it out alive are theiring the horror that they witness. one person saying, the shooters burst into the room from the left. blowing out windows.

jumping through the shattered glass. in this morning's "usa today" the widow of nicholas thalasinos says her husband a farook were arguing about the holocaust right before the shooting. >> fbi agents around the globe are scrambling to find out just how the terror plot originated. >> over the weekend, investigators made two trips to the home of farook's former neighbor and friend, accused of purchasing two of the murder weapons. here's more from cecilia vega. >> reporter: the investigation into that deadly shooting turning to a raid of the family home of enriququmarquez. law enforcement saying he's farook's one-time friend and neighbor, suspected of supplying him with those two high-powered rifles used in the massacre. the fbi raiding the home. >> did he provide the guns to farook? >> reporter: authorities say there is no information that marquez played any role in the shooting that left 14 people dead. marquez now reportedly checked himself into a mental health facility. this neighbor says she noticed a change in farook about a year

video captured three masked thieves using a sledgdg hammer to smash jewelry store cases at the mall in riverside. sending people running in fear. witnesses say the noise sounded like gunshots. the army of police officers arrived on the scene, putting the mall on lockdown while they searched for the robbers. but they managed to slip away. in london, an apparent lone wolf terror attack on the subway. the suspect stabbed two people. witnesses say he shouted this is for syria. cell phone video, you can see there, captured it all. police brought him down with a taser. he's charged with attempted murder. british authorities are investigating the attack as a rrorist incident. there are several major developments in the chicago police shooting of laquan mcdonald. video of that shooting sparked national outrage after it showed the teen being hit by 16 bullets. the justice department is launching an investigation into the patterns and practices of the police department.
