a 14-year-old cedar rapids teen plans to plead guilty to voluntary manslaughter today. authorities say he shot and killed another teen after their two rival groups threatened each otheheon social media andd over text message. police say robert humbles killed 15-year-old aaron richardson. humbles also plans to plead guilty on twtwother charges. altogether he faces 25 years in prison. he would be in a juvenile facility until he turns 18. a judge would then decide whether to lease him or make him serve the rest of his prison sentence. on september 6th, two rival groups met near redmond park. court documents show humbles fired his gun and hit aaron richardson in the abdomen. richards then ran to a house in the 300 block of 16th street soututast. from there, first responders took him to a cedar rapids hospital where he died after surgery. cedar rapids police say violent crime has gone down over the past yeye. chief wayne jermanan gave that report during a public

night. he says the number of violent crimes has dropped 9 and a half percent since november 2014. however, jerman says burglaries have increased in certain neighborhoods. "significantly last month we saw burglaries were almost two times the average normal number of events reported so that was very concerning we've identified a number of groups and individidls who were rereonsible we've made some arrests for those cases " erman says people should always lock their doors and windows when leaving their homes. he says the numbers of violent crimes are down because of vigilant officers, and citizens notifying police. some students and staff at cedar rapids washington high schchl may have been exposed to asbestos during renovations last school year. a d-n-r investigation may lead to legal action ainst the school distict and an asbestos removal company. a complaint started the investigation. the dnr says the company the district hired to

specialties, failed on multiple levels. the district t s insisted the work never exposed students or school staff to the material. but the litigation report from the dnr cited thretimes potential asbestos exposure happeped during the school year: in december 2014, abatement specialties used a negative air machine when cleaning up an asbestos containment area. it was apparently blowing air into the school hallway rather than outside. but we don't know if any of that air had asbestos in it. in april 2015 - three air tests in the women's locker rowm failed - two measured particulate overload and one measured high asbestos counts. but we don't know if this was an area any students of staff had access to. in may, the company hired to check on asbestos levels, shive-hattery, found a "substantial amount of asbestos debris scattered throughout the boiler room floor." again we don't know if anyone

construction workers were near that area. the dnr litigation report also says at least 119 construction workers and 7 subcontractin g companies we on the school te in june and july when more testing showed high levels of asbestos. the district responded yesterday with a statement that reads in part, "at this time the district has not been provided with any infofoation indicating thahaany individual has tested positive for asbestos as a result of their presence on the job sit." in a tv-9 follow-up this morning.. a judge re-sentenced a dubuque man to 50 years in prison for robbing a bar and shooting a police officer in 2009. this was 77 year old eddie chest's third sentencing. chest took a plea agreement and was charged with robbery and attempted murder for the armed robbery at knicker's saloon. that's where he shot dubuque police lt. scott baxter. his last two sentences went against that plea agreement. in court yesterdayayprosecutors mme a

they chest should serve two 25 year sentences at the same time. his attorney said the shot chest t red ricocheted off the ground, then hit lieutenant baxter. but the judge told chest, that doesn't matter. he said chest pointed the gun in lt. baxter's direction. "this is a very serious offense. given the time of day ananthe fact that it's two armed individuals in a public establishment, multiple patrons and the nature of the firearm in question. " the judge also pointed out chest had spent most of his adult life in andout of prison for various crimes. the state medical examiner is performing an autopsy today on a body found in the cedar river close to gilbertville. a trapper found the body sunday morning while ecking traps. authorities said it's not yet clear when the person died. they haven't said if the remains

the iowa city fire department is investigating 3 diffefent building fires in one day. at 8:30 yesterday morning, crews responded to 18 commercial drive, where they put out a fire on the roof of streb concrete. thent about 10:15 last night, fire crews responded to a dumpster fire at 630 capitol street. the fire department went to that address, right after finishing up at 816 north dubuque street. that fire was at the beta theta pi fraternity house. the fire department says they found flames in the third floor bedroom. they were able to contain the fire to that room. only one person was displaced. no one was hurt in any of those fires. four people face drug charges in vinton - as part of an ongoing investigation. there were two searches yesterday morning at 704 east eighth street and at 512 west 1 1h street. officers arrted 42 year old martin lundvall and 41 year old edward finley on charges of

they alslsarrested 37 year oldld kathy johnson and 36 year old jonathon franklin for possession of drug paraphernalia . and they arrested fifth person, 34-year-old phillip horak on an outstanding warrant for contempt of court. the survival rates for woman with stage four breast cancer has improved ove the last 20 years..& the university of iowa conducted a study to find those numbers and what factors have contributed to the improvements. kcrg-tv9's forrest saunders joins us at the desk this morning. forrest, what sorts of things did this study find? researchers looked at survival rates of 21- thousand wowon over the past two and a half decades. officials found from 88 to 91, median survival was around 20 months. that's jumpedo 26 months between the years 2007 and 2011. nene patients love to hear. sharon juon was diagnosed with stage four about five years ago. doctors thought

at first. but it turned out to be much worse. "i was conditioned for it being&cancer. i wasn't conditioned for it bebeg stage four.r.ver the optimist, sharon put a challenge to her doctor. she booked an expensive trip to europe a few years out. sharon was committed to getting there. a river crse through europe, that i had put together on my bucket list. i needed heheto help me achieve it. the uihc's dr. alexandra thomas came through. sharon, was able to get to europe and take her trip, and since has even gone to australia. prolongfd success like sharon's is what prompted dr. thomas to take a closer look at survival rates in the first place. "we're seeing more and more stories like that. we wanted to ask, what does this look like broadly in the united states."dr. thomas said the data study suggested why some woman like sharon may be living longer, primary tumor removal. in the past, it was ignored to give patients as much quality of life as possible, but the research suggests if removed it could lengthen lives. the
