rear-ended the school van at the intersection. police told a tv9 crew at the scene that ambulances took 6 people to the hospital. investigators say several of those injured were students. they didn't say how many were students or how badly they were hurt. also in waterloo,o,ire crews are investigating a house fire as suspicious. firefighters responded to a home at 71 mulberry street around 8:45 last night - near mulberry and mullan avenue. no one was injured. the fire epartment says people inside the home had put out most of the flames by the time fire crews arrived. in a tv-9 follow-up this morning.. prosecutors have filed new charges against a man who they say tried to kiki a woman in elkader last month. 24ear-old brandon thoma now faces first degree burglary and second degree theft charges. that's in addition to the original attemptpt murder charge. police say thoma broke into a home last month after the woman's husband left for work. they say he then repeatedly punched and kicked her. police don't think it was a

this morning, , cedar rapids man is waiting sentencing after a jury found him guilty of second degree murder. 47-year-old edward cusic beat his mother to death with a crow bar three years ago. it happened at her home on old marion road ne. he faces up to 50 years in prison. police say he admitted beating his 68 year old mother at the time, but he claimed it was self-defense. he was on trial for first degree murder, but the jury found him guilty on the lesser charge. members of a charitable organization in iowa city say someone stole 2 flags and some rigigng from outside their building. members of the fraternal order of eagles noticed that a u-s flag and a fraternal order of eagles flag were missing tuesday night. the group's building is on highway 1, a block from riverside drive. iowa city police say they have not heard any report from the eagles about the missing flags. new cameras installed in the jones county sheriff's office prisoner transport van are helping deputies keep an eye on offenders. this van is similar to what

maryland, used when they arrested freddie gray last april. gray died from a spinal injury while in police custody, ananhis death set off nationwide protests. six baltimore police officers face charges, and one is already on trial. in addition to keeping prisoners safe, jones county sheriff greg grer says the system also covers his office from a legal standpoint. he says the freddie gray case exposed potential liabilities in how they transported prisoners. there's a camera inside each of the 3 pods and one at the dash, all feeding to a computer screen. "it records in high definition, it records all the cameras at the same time, so you don't have to worry about the user forgetting to turn on a camera " sheriff graver says the entire camera system cost the county around 15-thousand dollars. the coralville ecumenical food pantry will soon have a new and much larger home. it's a space workers say they've needed for years, but couldn't find an affordable solution. kcrg-tv9's sarah mccarthy shows

new spot that should fix this growing need. "this is the former coralville post office - it's just t short drive away from where the food pantry sits now. you can see there's a lot of open space here, but it won't be empty long. over here is where workers will put food and shelving. and if you look this way, this is where they'll being installing offices as early as friday." at the pantry's current location, shelf space is tight. the group takes in about a thousand pounds of food each month from community members that feeds 24-hundred people every year. and the organiniation's executive director says that need is growing. "food storage has been a really big obstacle for us. we've had to find creative ways to store food and at times we've had to turn donations away just because we don't have space for them." because the city of coralville owns this property, this is all happening because the council unanimously approved the move. coralville mayor john lundell says it's a gogo use for space that would otherwise sit empty. "i'm really pleased it'll be occupied again and there will be more activity around here and the food pantry will dress it up a little bit. it'll be great to have a tenant in here."

red kettles are being left unmanned thisisear. officials say that's unfortunate because kettles with a bell ringer perform significantly better. the johohon county salvation army reports its goal this year is 350,000 dollars. so far it's collected st under half of that about 153,000. these holiday donations make up 60% of johnson county salvation army's annual budget. and this isn't just a johnson county problem. linn county has reported a similar shortage. if yoyowant to help out, we'll

the carnegie- stout public library in dubuque is developing detection procedures to try to prevent bed bugs. in october, the library got rid of two couches, hundreds of newspapers, and closed a section for a week after staff found bed bugs. the library will now carefully check all items people return and will also check furniture weekly. for all of the people who get parking tickets in cedar rapids, the city is offering a way out... by helping others. until december 23rd, they can get out of tickets by donating items like baby wipes, laundry soap, and blankets to benefit horizons, the willis dady shelter, and waypoint. each donated item has a price attached to it, and adding those items together can cover parking fines up to $100. for more information go to our website, kcrg.com. donald trump is still getting a lot of backlash over a proposal about muslims. despite the controversial comments, the republican candidate says he's still confident in his bid for the

a baltimore police officer is claming his innocence in the death of freddie gray. officer william porter is the first of six officers to go to trial. gray died while in police custody in april. andrew spencer reports this trial is expected to wrap up by the end of next week. officer william porter testified that he knew freddie gray from his patrols of the west baltimore neighborhood. he said, quote, "freddie gray and i weren't friends, but we had a mutual respect." when one of porter's lawyers asked if he was sorry

gray died in april, a week after officers put him in the back of a police van -- shackling him but not putting him in a seat belt. during the ride, somehow, gray suffered a broken neck. the van made six stops during his 45-minute ride to the police station. prosecutors allege porter should have called for a medic after the fourth stop, when gray asked for help. porter testified that he didn't realize gray needed immediate medical assistance until the last stop. with one of his attorneys at times demonstratin g gray's position, porter testified that people transported in wagons were never secured with seat belts -- certainly not the people he put in wagons: roughly 150, he says, since joining the baltimore police department in 2010. on wednesday, porter told the jury, quote, "it is the responsibility of the wagon driver to get the prisoner from point a to point b." during cross examination, the state's attorney accused porter of doing nothing to protect freddie gray's life. porter called that, "untrue."

prosecutors formally charged the alleged planned parenthood shooter with 179 felony counts, including 1st degree murder. they accuse robert dear of killing 3 people, including a police officer, in colorado springs. the november 27th shooting also injured 9 others. during his court hearing today, dear repeatedly interrupted the proceedings. the f-b-i is uncovering more information about the married couple that killed 14 people a week ago today in san bernardino, california. the director of the agency say syed farook and tashfeen malik talked about an attack as early as 20-13. investigators now believe the couple had become radicalized before they met or started dating online two years ago. they also say farook might have plotted an attack with the man accused of providing him assault rifles used in the shooting. "as early as the end of 2013 they were talking to each other about jihad and martyrdom,

" law enforcement officials tell a-b-c that images on electronics the couple tried to destroy show other locations, including a high school. but they don't know if they were targets. republican presidential candidate marco rubio commented on the san bernardino shooting while campaigning in michigan. the florida senator says homegrown terrorism is becoming a real threat to the united states. during a speech to about 150 people, he also called for stronger action against terrorism around the wold. rubio was also critical of president obama's oval office speech on terrorism earlier this week.
