at the university of iowa hospitals and clinics this morning. in news we first brought you yesterday morning-- a gunshot hurt the boy late sunday night. police say they found the boy with injuries to his jaw around 11-45 sunday night at 942 main street. police say the bullet came from a handgun. the hospital has not released his condition. police told tv-9 there is still quite a bit of confusion about what happened, including the first call for help. the original call to 9-1-1 said it happened at 9-20 main street. this is dispatch traffic right after the call came in. "all cars report of a possible shooting at 920 main street. we got a call from a subject saying there was a subject accidentally shot. they were going to be transporting

disconnected." " police say they arrived on the scene before the child left in that green camry. they say some people there told officers the child was not actually shot, but rather cut with some broken glass. but as paramedics took a closer look, they determined he did in fact have a gun shot wound. police say they still aren't sure if the person who pulled the trigger was an adult or one of the other children inside the building. "right now it does not appear to be any criminal intent in regards specifically to the gun shot wound. " according to the dubuque zoning department, the first floor of 9-42 main is zoned for commercial use only. but, police say the first floor of the building, where the shooting happened, was being used as a make shift apartment. the zoning department is now investigating why people were living here. right now, no one faces any charges, but they are possible. a des moines teen faces a gun charge after shooting another teen. police arrested a 15 year old for shooting another 15

inside a home around 1:30 thursday afternoon. the case is now in the hands of the juvenile court system. the victim is expected to survive. president obama is expected to formally announce executive action later this morning. among several measures, he's pushing expanded background checks across the nation to cover more firearms sold at places like gun shows or online dealers. the f-b-i will also add 230 agents to process those background checks. he wants these actions to reduce gun violence and recent mass shootings. gun stores across eastern iowa will be watching the president closely today. one store owner says there has been a lot more interest in guns for self-protection after shootings across the country. they say their sales are safe and that customers buying handguns or long guns all go through background checks. the owner of tactical creations in vinton says he doesn't see a need for changes to gun regulations.

" the president is expected to deliver his speech detailing the executive actions later this morning from the east room. some voters in eastern iowa can start submitting their ballots today for local elections. in johnson county, early voting for the special election for the county supervisor starts today. you can vote at the auditor's office in iowa city every weekday until the 19th. the office will be open to cast your ballot from 7:45 a-m to 5:30 p-m. there are also several satellite locations open, you can check out the full list on kcrg dot com. black hawk county is holding an election for the waterloo school district bond referendum. if it passes on february second, the district will build a career center and renovate east and west high school. voters can cast early ballots today at east high school from 3 until 9 p-m. iowa voters now have an easier way to register for

secretary of state paul pate unveiled the new electronic voter registration system in des moines. the iowa department of transportation is housing the new system and it's available on any device with internet connection. you have to have a driver's license or state-issued i-d to use the new system. secretary pate says he wants all eligible citizens to participate in the electoral process and this brings iowa closer to that goal. " this is going to be a great tool to help in the voting process in the election process because it'll give us more current and up to date records so we can reduce the lines on election day." some are concerned about the new system because it excludes roughly 145-thousand eligible voters who don't have a drivers license or state i-d. secretary pate said his office wants to fix that gap when more funding is available. both democrats and republicans are ramping up campaign efforts across iowa. republican marco rubio will

cedar rapids at 8 this morning. democrat hillary clinton made several stops throughout the state yesterday. and republican donald trump released his first t-v campaign ad. "he'll stop illegal immigration by building a wall on our southern border that mexico will pay for. we will make america great again." this is trump's first political ad, and it has already sparked controversy. according to politifact, the footage used during the mexico immigration segment is actually from morocco. the trump campaign responded, saying the use of that footage was intentional and selected to demonstrate the severe impact of an open border. with just a few weeks left until the iowa caucuses, the number of candidates visiting the state will increase. here is a calendar looking at all 15 major candidates--three democrats and a dozen republicans.

find a day without multiple candidates in the state. for example, january 6th -- huckabee, rubio, cruz and carson. or on january 9th -- cruz, o'malley, trump and sanders. we counted up 27 events by 10 candidates during that time period. yesterday, hillary clinton drew about 500 people to the newbo city market. although democrats have only three candidates on the ballot, some voters may still be undecided. it's an even more pressing question for republicans. with a dozen candidates, a party co-chair in linn county says it's likely more than half the county's republicans have not settled on one candidate. two weeks before the caucuses to decide. this month, hospitals around the country are raising awareness about cervical cancer. it was once one of the most common causes of cancer death for american women. according to the american cancer society, the cervical cancer death rate has gone down by more than 50 percent over the last 30 years. the main reason - more woman are getting screened. coming up in our next half hour, tv9's forrest saunders is going to be live at linn county public health. he'll be talking with employees there about the importance of screening. dozens of budding musicians in dubuque now have a more comfortable place to sit. flexsteel industries donated 12 new chairs yesterday to the the northeast iowa school of music. that school helps develop the musical skills of people of all ages, and it offers one-on-one lessons. the dubuque based furniture maker made the chairs for the school, which replace the old, ripped up chairs they were using. non profits like northeast iowa school of music achieve their goals. " the northeast iowa school of music works with students learning a variety of instruments as well as vocal training. with school back in session, it's time to announce our three finalists for january's student of the month. we'll start with 18 year old jenna boller, a senior at iowa mennonite school. she has a long list of academic acheivements and her positive attitude makes her a great role model to her siblings and others. next up - victoria lea, a 12 year old seventh grader from harding middle school in cedar rapids. victoria excels in the classroom and with her violin. she also loves to give away paintings and crafts. and our last finalist is 17 year old abby schulte, a senior at keota junior senior high school. she was instrumental in getting hillary clinton to visit her school and is active with her campaign. abby is the student council president and participates in several extra curricular activities.

father-and-son ranchers whose arson convictions caused gunmen to seize a federal building in oregon are now in custody. dwight and steven hammond said they started a fire in 2001 to reduce the growth of invasive plants and protect their property. but prosecutors say the hammonds set the fire to try and cover up poaching. yesterday the harney county sheriff confirmed the hammonds have started serving their five-year sentence. gunmen protesting the hammonds' conviction and sentence seized a national wildlife refuge saturday. the protesters say they are "concerned citizens" who want to restore and defend the u-s constitution. now for a quick check on your weather with meteorologist kaj o'mara. stay with tv9. it's . now, one last look at this
