partially nude pictures with one another. the sexting happened over the summer off the school's network. but the district is now taking steps to educate students, parents, and staff about the issue. vo it started with a presentation to more than 200 parents thursday night. an fbi expert says her biggest tip for parents is not to be afraid of being the mean mom or dad. that means monitoring apps, browser history, contact lists, and pictures. rules some parents do use. alan temperly - parent of two "all devices need to be in our living room, no closed doors with their internet devices." school officials say while safety starts with parents, it's also important for teachers to be aware. that's why dozens of staff members are receiving training today. mae hingtgen - behavior support specialist "inform the staff about the types of behaviors we're seeing with students and then how we should react if they become aware that students at school are engaging n sexting or any other inappropriate behaviors with their cell phones." sarah mccarthy if you'd like to see all the tips given to parents thursday night, look for a link to that information under this story on kcrg dot com.

kcrg-tv9 news. a new mentoring program in dubuque aims to keep at-risk high school students from dropping out of school. the program is called "check and connect." loras college undergraduates serve as mentors for students at the alternative learning center. the college students monitor the high school students' attendance and grades. they also talk about life and social issues as well as ways to prepare for college. "a lot of them think, "i can't afford it". so we do a lot of coaching and what the fafsa form looks like. " yesterday, governor branstad signed a proclamation that made january-- mentoring month. president obama is sticking to his plans for stronger gun control. he reinforced his idea during a nationally televised town-hall meeting in virginia last night. president obama defended his executive

checks on some gun sales. he told people that he believes in the constitutiona l right to bear arms - and that he is not trying to take guns away from people. " if we could combine gun safety with sensible background checks and some other checks, we're not going to eliminate gun violence but we will lessen it. " a new cnn-orc poll shows 67 percent support president obama's executive actions he announced this week. but less than half think they will reduce gun- related deaths. one of president obama's goals is to close the gun show loophole. he says buyers often miss background checks at a gun show. there's one in cedar rapids this weekend. officials says crowds at gun shows have grown since president obama has been in office. those hoping to take over the president's office next year are in eastern iowa campaigning today. republican presidential candidate ted cruz will be in northern iowa today. he starts his day in mason city and ends in decorah,

tonight. he has been ranking in the top three in recent polls of g-o-p candidates. another g-o-p presidential candidate is starting in the opposite side of the state. senator rand paul is starting in southeast iowa today. then he will be in marion at 4 o'clock this afternoon and north liberty at 5:30. paul's recent poll numbers are below 5 percent support. on the other side of party line, senator bernie sanders will be in waverly, toledo, and cedar rapids today. the democratic candidate will hold town meetings in each place, ending with one in cedar rapids at 7 o'clock tonight. that will be at the veterans memorial building. bill clinton is trying to drum up support for his wife in eastern iowa. "53:40: she's made things good. she made good things. you need somebody who just shows up and goes to work. someone who can find common ground, someone who can stand her ground."

front of hundreds of people at hotel julien in dubuque last night. he touched on many of hillary's key campaign points - including more gun control and fighting drug abuse. the former president also spoke to voters at the national czech and slovak museum in cedar rapids yesterday. bill clinton dedicated the museum when he was president. he talked about flood recovery and how hillary will restore economic growth. republican presidential candidate ben carson also stopped in cedar rapids. yesterday, he held a town hall at isaac newton christian academy. some have questioned carson's qualifications for president because of his limited experience with foreign policy. carson told tv-9 he feels he is qualified. "fortunantly for me, i have a brain. i have the ability to read, to go to lots of sources, to cross-reference to check things, much in the same way that i did

carson was a neurosurgeo n. yesterday he took a jab at the governors and congressmen in the presidential race, saying they don't necessarily have superior foreign policy experience. to see the extended interview with carson, head to kcrg-tv9's facebook page. microsoft has developed a caucus reporting app for precinct captains to use on caucus night. the iowa republican and democratic parties say they've done hundreds of training sessions to teach people how it works. they're also making sure a precinct worker brings a smartphone to each caucus location. once each caucus records its results, it sends them to the party headquarters for review. "they can verify that those results look reasonable. are within the error bounds they expect them to be in. they can reach back out to the chair if they need to. ask for clarification. they can reach out to chairs who haven't reported to see if they need some help. republican caucuses. early results gave the win to mitt romney, and then 16 days later the party declared rick santorum was the actual winner. the deadline to sign up for the affordable care act is fast approaching. if you want coverage by next month you have to sign up by the 15th. that's just a week away. kcrg-tv9's forrest saunders joins me on the desk this morning. forrest, missing the big january 31st deadline has some consequences ? yeah. they're costly. bigger than if you weren't insured last year. depending on which is greater, 2,085 bucks or 2.5% of your annual household income, due on your 2016 taxes. according to the the insurance experts at unitypoint st. luke's, iowa still has a bunch of uninsured going into these last weeks. we're talking about six percent of the state's population. six percent of those people live in linn county, about 11,280. that's the second highest

uninsured in iowa, next to polk county. the largest chunk of those without insurance? hispanic men, ages 18 to 34. they're closely followed by african american men in the same age group. officials call them the "invincibles". " we're seeing a greater number of uninsured people between the ages of 18-34, who think that they're not going to get sick. i always tell them, you can't plan an appendectomy. the best health won't keep you from having appendicitis. thanks a lot forrest. dietary vegetables guidelines come out every five years, affecting packaging labels, school lunches, government- funded meals, and doctors' advice. right now, 13 percent of the average american's diet consists of sugar. the new guidelines call for americans to drop that down so less than 10 percent of their daily calories come from sugar. 11 percent of the average american's diet consists of saturated fats. the new guidelines say that number should be less than 10 percent. and when it comes to salt intake, right now the average american consumes 34-hundred milligrams of sodium each day. the guidelines say we should be eating fewer than 23-hundred milligrams of sodium daily. a dietitian from mercy medical center in dubuque has advice to cut back on the bad sugars. kristie jacobson says think of natural

a treat. and think about added sugars as something you really want to cut back on - sugars in dessert, frosted cereals and white breads. and keep an eye out for sugars in low fat foods. "when manufactures take fat out of a product, often they do have to add sugar in order to make the recipe work. and it's kind of a balance. i tell people to buy the regular and keep the portion size under control. we have an update on a story we reported last month. a cedar rapids man has raised more than 28- hundred dollars to help struggling families in the city. hassan selim is a religious leader at the islamic center of cedar rapids. he says he wants to help his neighbors and create a positive message surrounding the muslim community. selim recently presented a check to the salvation army. the organization says the money will help provide rent or utility support to about 19 households in the cedar rapids area. many people are loyal to their favorite pizza delivery chain. but pizza hut is taking it a step further for its fans to show their support. that's coming up in today's america's money.
