we're trying to get more information on what happened. this is video from around 8 o'clock last night - police wouldn't confirm any other details. but we will bring you the latest as soon as we know more. this morning we have more information on that deadly crash in benton county that we told you about yesterday morning. the iowa state patrol says icy roads may have caused the crash that killed 3 people. a minivan and a pick-up truck crashed around 5:15 yesterday morning, on highway 30, just east of 16th avenue. that's near keystone. the state patrol says the driver of the minivan carrying 10 people lost control. another vehicle then hit the minivan, causing 2 other vehicles to crash. three people from the cedar rapids area, who were all inside the minivan, died at the scene. investigators have not released their names yet. trooper bob conrad with the iowa state patrol says while it appears ice did play a role, he says it also seems the driver of the minivan failed to maintain control. he says the van was also overloaded. cathy cutler with the d-o-t district office says they had

stretch of highway 30 during and after the storm that hit earlier this week. trooper conrad says all 3 people killed were not wearing seat belts, and 2 of them were ejected from the vehicle. "53:07-:15 "i cannot say enough about seat belts. two of the fatalities were fully ejected out of this vehicle. seat belts anywhere in the vehicle make a difference. seat belts save lives. " ":13-:24 "we actually had called in extra people, just because of the duration of this storm. especially in the rural areas, we were seeing some blowing and drifting snow. so we wanted to make sure we did have that presence 24/7. " conrad also mentioned their effort to notify family members was taking a bit longer than expected. they had expanded their search outside u-s borders. iowa lawmakers are considering a bill that would require local governments and authorities to tell federal agencies when they have illegal immigrants in custody. a subcommittee passed the bill after house republicans proposed it. normally, immigration officers ask local police departments to hold illegal immigrants until federal authorities can

but some cities and counties are considered sanctuaries. those are places in the u-s that refuse to hold illegal immigrants after their court ordered detention. the bill would prevent that from happening. according to the center for immigration studies, more than 20 counties in iowa follow sanctuary policies. that includes linn, johnson, dubuque and benton counties. the iowa workforce development has installed new software into its system after wrongfully paying out nearly $100,000. a report from the state auditor shows i-w-d wrongfully paid out more than $909,000 dollars in unemployment benefits from 2012 through 2014. those included overpayments and payouts to fake companies. the auditor's office found more than $700,000 in overpayments were due to a telephone system malfunction. on march 8, 2014, iowa workforce development's phone system did not properly record information called in. so the organization paid out the maximum benefit on each claim that week.

bill you saw action on yesterday is the sum total of the house bill that came over last year. " an amendment would let cities in iowa to continue to ban fireworks even if the bill passes. the university of iowa's dance marathon is just hours away. students will dance non- stop for 24 hours to youth cancer patients and their families at the university of iowa children's hospital. kcrg-tv9's brea love is live at the u-i hospitals and clinics where a radio-thon starts at 6 a-m. brea, how are things going there? chris, nicole--things are just getting set up here. so far the marathon has raised more than 16 million dollars. and the plan as usual, is to keep it up. this is ava swift. she's a healthy 6 year old, who has been through a real battle. when ava was 6 months old, her parents noticed

4:01 "when we fed her she would like sweat, like her head would sweat on our arm, she would sweat when she woke up, but being our first child we didn't know if that's normal." as time went on they noticed her stomach was swelling. they went to multiple specialists who said ava was fine. until one recommended the family make the trip from their home in northwest iowa, to the children's hospital. 5:13 "they started test right away, and that's when they told us she was diagnosed with stage 4, neuroblastoma." that would send the family on a year long journey featuring 14 chemo treatments, and surgery. which can be devastating to watch a child go through. 5:59 "to a mother, like i was in the bathroom, crying, vomiting because i'm like quit hurting my child." swift says ava took it like a champ, and walked away cancer free. during this year's dance marathon, ava will walk across the stage for her five year graduation from the cancer program.

these kids want to dance. and those dancers help the hospital do amazing things. 23:40- "this is revolutionizing how we are treating cancer in the year 2016, and dance marathon has provided steadfast support." last year doctors started using a new method to fight cancer - attacking it as cancer cells change. they look at everything internally and individually, then adjust treatment as the cancer changes. 25:28- "the conventional mechanisms for funding something is thorough the national institute of health or philanthropy and anytime the science is cutting edge or innovative it is also high risk so its very hard to get funds ." only a few hospitals in the nation have access to this technology. 28:57 " its going to be available to you at any center in the united states, but dance marathon wanted that future for us to be today." and they will continue to support it. making parents like swift forever thankful.

for your child as much as you are going to fight for your child." you can donate by calling 800-456-2772 the phone lines open at 6. dance marathon starts tonight at 7 and runs for 24 hours! live in iowa city, brea love, kcrg-tv9 news. 1,700 patients from the university of iowa hospital and clinics may have been exposed to a bacteria during major surgery. u-i-h-c is in the process of talking to those patients now after one patient was diagnosed with non- tuberculous myco-bacteria or n-t-m. u-i-h-c says symptoms of n-t-m include a prolonged fever, pain, redness, heat or irritation around a surgical incision site. it can also cause joint and muscle pain and energy loss. the c-d-c estimates the risk of infection is less than 1%. u-i-h-c is contacting patients who've had major surgeries since 2012 because it can take months or years for infected people to show symptoms. u-i-h-c has sent letters to

been impacted. n-t-m bacteria is found all over the earth, and often in water. the issue is as it grows near the fan of the machine, it blows into the air of the operating room and near the open surgical site. that is how an infection can start. this is not just an issue for u-i-h-c, the c-d-c is asking hospitals that preform major lung, liver and heart transplants to take precautions. officials say the main focus right now is to contact patients. "we need them to understand the risk of association at our hospital and other hospitals because this is something that has potential to impact every hospital in the united states that does these surgeries and we're hearing more and more that there are patients popping up at various places. " officials have started using the machines again, but they have moved them outside of the operating room. n-t-m infections are rarely deadly, but can lead to lung disease. a state in the u-s is now declaring a health emergency because of the spread of the zika virus. as now of symptoms are generally mild, but for

a new two-million-dollar space at the university of iowa is helping future teachers learn how to use advanced technology. items like this robot - which lets homebound students wheel around classrooms in real time - are part of the upgrades inside the lindquist center. smartboards and wires that feed sound directly into hearing aids are also part of the project. it's preparing future teachers to take on their own classroom. 17:10:15 "it's kind of just learning and rolling with the punches and being flexible with your teaching, because this kind of stuff is going to be in our classroom one day.
