the congolese community in cedar rapids is dealing with the sudden loss of three lives. many gathered last night in a church to remember them. michka kabeya, platini namputu, and dickson mandiki, all from the democratic republic of the congo, died in a crash on u-s highway 30 near keystone early thursday morning. they were among 9 people who were traveling to work in tama in a minivan, when the iowa state patrol says it hit ice and lost control. singing members and representativ es of the congolese community sang prayers and talked about funeral plans at central assembly of god church. people there say they need any

prayer support for the others still recovering from the crash, and donations to cover burial costs. peter nkumu says people came together to get more information. "we wanted to get together to get more information about the accident itself, get more information about what the community is going to do in order to plan for their funerals. " "these people did not have close family members here and now the community's coming together and planned this to put them to rest." nkumu says anyone who wants to help will be able to donate to a memorial fund for the congolese community. that's being set up at wells fargo bank locations, and nkumu said it should be ready to accept donations by today or tomorrow. after several months in a legal battle, builders can move forward with a new high-rise in downtown iowa city. church appealed a judge's decision to dismiss a

"expanding healthy living, and serving our communities is our mission, and diabetes is a growing epidemic and something that the ymca feels we are in a unique position to be able to address." the solution is a year long group based course, shaped around shifting a person's life. the class has three goals.. reduce bodyweight by 7%, perform physical

"what studies have shown is lifestyles and behavior change is the most effective way." to qualify for the class, participants have to be at risk for prediabetes. this can be determined by a blood test, or filling out a risk assessment. the course is taught by a lifestyle coach, who follows a specific cdc curriculum. with a goal of bringing awareness to a serious issue. "a lot people don't like to say that they have it or want to admit that they need to start taking care of themselves." coaches go over how to read nutrition labels, and provide encourageme nt as participants track their weight, grams, and physical activity. "some people have lost over 40 pounds within the course of a year, they are grateful to have the class because now that they've done the class they have prevented their risk of getting diabetes." hoeger says the course doesn't force participants on a diet or hold them accountable, but gives them a chance to encourage each other. "they lean on each other, and support each other, we've had classes that meet before class and they walk together before class. they really have creating their own little
