the congolese community in cedar rapids is dealing with the sudden loss of three lives. many gathered last night in a church to remember them. michka kabeya, platini namputu, and dickson mandiki, all from the democratic republic of the congo, died in a crash on u-s highway 30 near keystone early thursday morning. they were among 9 people who were traveling to work in tama in a minivan, when the iowa state patrol says it hit ice and lost control. singing members and representativ es of the congolese community sang prayers and talked about funeral plans at central assembly of god church. people there say they need any

prayer support for the others still recovering from the crash, and donations to cover burial costs. peter nkumu says people came together to get more information. "we wanted to get together to get more information about the accident itself, get more information about what the community is going to do in order to plan for their funerals. " "these people did not have close family members here and now the community's coming together and planned this to put them to rest." nkumu says anyone who wants to help will be able to donate to a memorial fund for the congolese community. that's being set up at wells fargo bank locations, and nkumu said it should be ready to accept donations by today or tomorrow. after several months in a legal battle, builders can move forward with a new high-rise in downtown iowa city. church appealed a judge's decision to dismiss a

last week, the city council approved the settlement between the church and the tower's developers. then on saturday, the church officially withdrew its appeal. as part of that agreement, the company will make donations to trinity episcopal's outreach program - the shelter house - over the next three years. the 15-story building will go up on the corner of gilbert and college streets in iowa city. plans call for the tower to house dozens of movie theatre, and a bowling alley. presidential candidates just have one day left until the new hampshire primaries. some are chasing a victory tomorrow night -- while others are just trying to stay in contention. republicans debated in the state over the weekend, where the attacks were sharp. new jersey governor chris christie came out, almost from the start, targeting florida senator marco rubio. christie argued rubio isn't ready to face hillary clinton in a general election, or serve as president. he called out rubio for having "scripted responses," and being inexperienced. " other topics covered in saturday night's debate were isis, the north korean missile launch and the affordable care act. it's official. hillary clinton did come away with a win over bernie sanders in the iowa caucuses. the iowa democratic party finished its review of the results. the party reviewed the results at 14 of the precincts. it found that there were errors in the results that came out of 5 of those. but it wasn't enough to change the statewide results. clinton got 49.8% support, while bernie sanders got 49.6% support, still an incredibly close finish for those 2 candidates. the iowa attorney general's office has a backlog of about 100 criminal appeal cases. chief deputy attorney general eric tabor says this comes after a 2012 iowa supreme court rule change. it requires more appeal briefs, which means more office work. tabor asked for and got permission from the iowa

hire three temporary lawyers to handle the extra workload. the agency has been telling the state about this backlog since 2013. an eastern iowa man faces a criminal mischief charge for setting off a sprinkler at covenant medical center. it caused more than 10- thousand dollars in damage. police say 42 year-old douglas hala, formerly of toledo, is a patient in the mental health unit at the hospital. according to the waterloo-cedar falls courier, he got bored around 5:30 yesterday morning and hit a sprinkler nozzle with his knuckles. after the sprinkler went off, he punched two holes in the wall. police say water from the sprinkler head flooded his fifth floor room and leaked down to lower floors. according to court records, hala pleaded guilty last year to an assault charge for allegedly threatening a nurse at covenant. 86 million people in the u-s have prediabites. that's according to the centers for disease and control. and the c-d-c says of that number, 10% don't realize it.

now at the desk. brea, the y-m-c-a in cedar rapids has a plan to help those who are aware? that's right. prediabetes is what leads to type 2 diabetes. it's when an individual's blood glucose level is elevated, but not high enough for a full diabetes diagnosis. according to the c-d-c, prediabetes is on the rise in the u-s and linn county public health says the county is no exception. that's why the y- is taking the steps to stop it through a special course. preventing diabetes requires a complete life style change. and that's the goal of the cedar rapids metropolitan y-m-c-a, one of the 1,000 programs across the country. "expanding healthy living, and serving our communities is our mission, and diabetes is a growing epidemic and something that the ymca feels we are in a unique position to be able to address." the solution is a year long group based course, shaped around shifting a person's life. the class has three goals.. reduce bodyweight by 7%, perform physical

stop diabetes. "what studies have shown is lifestyles and behavior change is the most effective way." to qualify for the class, participants have to be at risk for prediabetes. this can be determined by a blood test, or filling out a risk assessment. the course is taught by a lifestyle coach, who follows a specific cdc curriculum. with a goal of bringing awareness to a serious issue. "a lot people don't like to say that they have it or want to admit that they need to start taking care of themselves." coaches go over how to read nutrition labels, and provide encourageme nt as participants track their weight, grams, and physical activity. "some people have lost over 40 pounds within the course of a year, they are grateful to have the class because now that they've done the class they have prevented their risk of getting diabetes." hoeger says the course doesn't force participants on a diet or hold them accountable, but gives them a chance to encourage each other. "they lean on each other, and support each other, we've had classes that meet before class and they walk together before class. they really have creating their own little
