kcrg-tv 9's brea love joins us at the desk this morning. brea, students are saying this a chance to show lawmakers what they need... that's right. until recently, students say they didn't fully understand how a school's budget worked. but, once they learned programs could be cut, some decided to speak up. students will load charter buses later this morning in route to the capitol. there they will stand in front of iowa legislators telling their stories, explaing why they want lawmakers to make education funding a priority. students say the programs that are in jeopardy at their schools are important for their future. they want to show lawmakers how essential it is to invest in the next generation. " i'm surprised that the decision was made, the money concerns are real for the district and they have to make some hard choices, but i'm confused as to why they made this choice as opposed to one that would have less of an impact on some families and some kids. helping his mother kill his wife 3 years ago. yesterday, a newton jury convicted 40 year old dustin jefferson for aiding and abetting first degree murder. this was jefferson's third trial for his wife's death. the first ended during jury selection, and the second ended in a mistrial. authorities say 32 year old kerry o'clair jefferson died from a stab wound to the neck in september 2013. police found her body when they went to a home in tama to arrest dustin jefferson on a different charge. in 2014, a jury found jefferson's mother, ginger, guilty of first degree murder. she's now serving a life sentence. testimony during that trial implicated dustin jefferson's involvement in the murder. emerald ash borer is now on the university of iowa campus. a member of the landscape services staff found it. the invasive pest destroys ash trees. ash trees only account for about 7% of all of the campus trees. u-i facilities staff say they were trying to be proactive and diversified in what trees they planted on

the city is encouraging people across iowa city to diversify the trees in their yards. the iowa city parks and forestry superintenden t also says it isn't necessary for people to cut down their ash trees immediately. he says it can take 8 to 12 years for the insect to decimate the local ash tree population. the emerald ash borer is now in 30 iowa counties. that includes black hawk, dubuque, linn and bremer. the iowa department of natural resources has instituted a statewide quarantine. this means ash trees in any form cannot be transported across state lines. two eastern iowa photographers are bringing train safety into focus. they say people are being reckless around trains in cedar rapids. alex jordan and lance schaeffer are train enthusiasts, who have spent hours recording video of trains. they say they have captured many people breaking the law by crossing the tracks once warning lights signal an approaching train. some of the worst offenders are pedestrians. for example, a group of runners missed a speeding train only by about
