republican donald trump and democrat bernie sanders are celebrating big wins this morning. voters in new hampshire chose those two as the winners for the primary. trump won with 35% support. while ohio governor john kasich also outperformed the polls -- nearly hitting 16%. ted cruz was third with 11.6% with 89% reporting. vermont senator bernie sanders overwhelmingly won with 60-percent. clinton got 38-percent of the vote. kcrg-tv9's washington bureau chief jacqueline policastro found some excited sanders supporters. jacqueline policastro/co ncord, nh @ :01 it's a good morning for bernie sanders! he pulled off a big win here in new hampshire telling voters that he defied expectations. we talked to a lot of supporters take a listen. in concord. he also said that his performance shows that staying away from negative campaigning works. presidential candidates are moving on this morning. chris christie says he's going home to new jersey to reevaluate. republicans have a primary vote in south carolina on the 20th. nevada democrats caucus that same day. republicans in nevada caucus on the 23rd. and the democratic primary for south carolina is on the 27th. it will come to peak on march 1st --super tuesday-- with 14 republican and 11 democratic primaries or caucuses. cedar rapids students are heading to des moines this morning to talk to lawmakers. this group of dozens of high schools students is going to lobby legislators in hopes of increasing school funding. last month, the republican- controlled house approved a 2% increase in funding for fiscal 2017. but the democratic- majority senate says that's not enough, and passed a 4% increase yesterday. lawmakers expect the issue to go back and forth between the chambers before it heads to special legislative

kcrg-tv 9's brea love joins us at the desk this morning. brea, students are saying this a chance to show lawmakers what they need... that's right. until recently, students say they didn't fully understand how a school's budget worked. but, once they learned programs could be cut, some decided to speak up. students will load charter buses later this morning in route to the capitol. there they will stand in front of iowa legislators telling their stories, explaing why they want lawmakers to make education funding a priority. students say the programs that are in jeopardy at their schools are important for their future. they want to show lawmakers how essential it is to invest in the next generation. "19:30:46 i think i would tell them that i know that it's hard and we have a lot of different departments that need a lot of money, but this is something that you invest in - invest in your community, especially in iowans and stuff like that. it helps the future. " school officials went over how

persuasive argument and what to expect as the students took the podium. officials say out of all of the students only a couple have been to the capitol. so this will be a great experience for students no matter what the outcome is. chris, nicole they leave at 8:15 this morning and hoping to make an impact. thanks a lot brea. governor terry branstad says an upcoming conference will look at how to align high school class work with iowa's workforce needs. he discussed the idea while touring waterloo west high school yesterday. as part of his stop, branstad learned about the school's culinary class. waterloo officials say adding more career and technical options is tough without additional money. one week ago, voters in waterloo rejected a $47 million bond that would have earmarked most of the money for exactly that. branstad says working with existing resources is a reality with the state's budget. 12:26:54 "even with existing facilities, there's a lot you can do. and also partnering with the community colleges, like hawkeye, as with the private sector business, we just need to be smart about the way we work together and find ways to collaborate and utilize the resources we have."

address those collaboration issues is set to happen april 19 in des moines. it's called the future ready iowa summit. some parents in the iowa city school district say walking isn't possible for their kids after the district cut free busing for them for next school year. the district says it's saving $400,000 by doing so. " i'm surprised that the decision was made, the money concerns are real for the district and they have to make some hard choices, but i'm confused as to why they made this choice as opposed to one that would have less of an impact on some families and some kids. " the district is cutting busing for kids who live within 2 miles of 9 elementary schools. it says part of its plan will be to increase busing in some lower income areas. in a tv-9 follow-up this morning.. a tama county man will be

helping his mother kill his wife 3 years ago. yesterday, a newton jury convicted 40 year old dustin jefferson for aiding and abetting first degree murder. this was jefferson's third trial for his wife's death. the first ended during jury selection, and the second ended in a mistrial. authorities say 32 year old kerry o'clair jefferson died from a stab wound to the neck in september 2013. police found her body when they went to a home in tama to arrest dustin jefferson on a different charge. in 2014, a jury found jefferson's mother, ginger, guilty of first degree murder. she's now serving a life sentence. testimony during that trial implicated dustin jefferson's involvement in the murder. emerald ash borer is now on the university of iowa campus. a member of the landscape services staff found it. the invasive pest destroys ash trees. ash trees only account for about 7% of all of the campus trees. u-i facilities staff say they were trying to be proactive and diversified in what trees they planted on

the city is encouraging people across iowa city to diversify the trees in their yards. the iowa city parks and forestry superintenden t also says it isn't necessary for people to cut down their ash trees immediately. he says it can take 8 to 12 years for the insect to decimate the local ash tree population. the emerald ash borer is now in 30 iowa counties. that includes black hawk, dubuque, linn and bremer. the iowa department of natural resources has instituted a statewide quarantine. this means ash trees in any form cannot be transported across state lines. two eastern iowa photographers are bringing train safety into focus. they say people are being reckless around trains in cedar rapids. alex jordan and lance schaeffer are train enthusiasts, who have spent hours recording video of trains. they say they have captured many people breaking the law by crossing the tracks once warning lights signal an approaching train. some of the worst offenders are pedestrians. for example, a group of runners missed a speeding train only by about

"i don't want to be the person to have to call 911 if you get hit. or if you almost get hit and the train has to go into an emergency. i don't want you family friends and engineer a conductor to go through that." the safety manager for cedar rapids and iowa city railway says employees and engineers are told to keep an eye out for people illegally crossing railroad tracks. they turn over descriptions or license plate numbers to police. the environmental protection agency is going to discuss cleaning up a contaminated former industrial site in waterloo. waterloo industries operated on a 10-acre property near highway 218 until 1997. an environmental study that same year revealed contaminated soil and groundwater. the e-p-a is proposing a vacuum system to remove vapors from beneath buildings there now, which include a recycling operation, self-storage and a gym.

the new hampshire primary brought different presidential candidates to the forefront than the iowa caucuses. university of iowa students are on alert after two more reports of sexual misconduct on campus. the school didn't provide much information. will be talking to learn how to ask legislators for more money.
