the district says it cleaned the area where it found asbestos and tested the air when the work was done. bills in the iowa legislature have until the end of the week to make it out committee. this friday is the first funnel, which means the bill committee. if the bill started in the house committee it must make it to the house floor by friday. same goes for bills that started with senate committees. the second funneis not until march 11th. by then,n,ll senate bills mustst make it out of house committees and vice versa. one bill up for discussion today would expand medical marijuana. the house bill would allow medical marijuana production and distribution in iowa. as of now, people with epilepsy can use cannabis oil and must get it out of state. today, nearly 100 cancer patients, survivors and caregivers from across iowa will travel to the state capitol. they are asking lawmakers to pass a bill that would not let minors use tanning beds. last year, those with american cancer society tried to

lawmakers for the same law. next month, the state is scheduled to transision to a privatized medicaid program that 3 companies will manage. but some say the state is still not ready to make the itch. they shared their concerns with lawmakers in des moineneyesterday. one retired doctor said changing an entire healthcare system could set people back years and compromise quality of health. " when you have to lose your provider, or case manager, or change the medical system you don't understand how devastating it is " the democratic- led senate passed a bill earlier this month to stop the privatizationon representative art staed - a democrat from cedar rapids - has proposed a similar bill in the republican-led house. but that likely won't make it to the floor for debate. a district court judge has sided with the state's decisisi to terminate its contract with wellcare of iowa for managing medicaid. the department of human services threw out the contract with the health care company in december. it said wellcare had not disclosed some information during the bidding process.

in response to the decision. 3.3 million women are at risk of exposing their growing baby to alcohol according to the centers for disease and control. the organization released a new report this month urging women who are sexually active to use birth control. kcrg-tv nine's brea love joins us now. brea, doctors e saying this study is important? that's right. the c-d-c performed a survey between women ages 15 to 44. they were asked if they drink, if they use birth control, or if they or their partners have had any procedures preventing them@from pregnancy the study found that women who are not using a a rm of protection arereutting their babies at risk. alcohol usage within even the first four to six weeks can cause lasting effects oh a developing baby. doctors ask if a woman is trying to have a baby she should refrain from alcohol, long before finding out. 43:35 "what the study is really saying is up to 50 percent of pregnancies in the us are unintended, with unintended pregnancies being so common, if you are having intercourse, you

the two council memeers say eliminating or reducing the planned salary increase would put less of a burden on taxpayers. right now, city leaders have recommended a 1-point-7 percent property tax increase for next year. a minnesota company that produces coatings for various materials is opening a new facility in dubuque. r-i-e coatings will set up shop in t dubuque industrial district. the 25-thousand square foot space will serve customers in iowa, illinois and indiana. the dubuque development corporation says companies like r-i-e are exactly the kind it's trying to bring ttthe area. "what it means is eventually it's going to be their showcase facility, this is where they are going to be bringing their costumers. so, it's access to markets illinois, iowa, and indiana, but also they provide services that are existing in industries that are utilized so that's important for the city of dubuque, the industry, and the community. "

employ 12 to 15 production workers in dubuque. it hopes to start manufacturing on july first. the university of iowa now has a $2.6 million dollar grant to help save marines from injury. the grant from the office of naval research will help create a simulation program to try and prevent injuries to u-s marines. the university's virtual human model, santos, will help create software that will allow mamanes to use their own characteristics like height, weight, and strength. the simulation program will be able to accurately predict injuries and help recommend training for individual marines. "in 2006 there w 1.9 million injuries just in the u.s. marines. so if we're able to reduce that just by 20 or 30 percent, then that would be fantastic.
