after a shed fire in cedar rapids. police and fire crews resesnded to 314 30th street drive se just after midnight for a report of a shed fire. no one was hurt. the fire department put out the fire and police arrested richard alatalo for arson and public intoxication. officers found him shortly after the fire started. alatalo was arrested for arson last october. after weeks of debate, this morning the cedar rapids school district has set a calendar. the discussion has focused onon which day of the week teachers would get professional development time. last night, the school board approved an early dismissal for students every friday next year. superintendent brad buck says research proves weekly professional development for teachers leads to better

"18:32:29 we are excited about that as a concept and ultimately to implement it. we'll make friday afternoons work. thehe will be a few thingng related to coachch for example that we may need to figure out some of those details." the district also says it plans to develop some more options and programs for kids on those early dismissal fridays. to an update on the district's magnet school efforts. mmnet schools focus on specific subjects and are designed to attract students from diverse backgrounds. the district says it hopes to transform roosevelt middle school, mckinley middle school and taylor elementary into future magnet schools. that's in addition to johnson and kenwood elementaries, which are already in progress. the future of additional magnet schools depends on if the district receives federal grant money. waterloo schools also unanimously approved next year's calendar that will give students select fridays off. the district will use the

the iowa board of educational examiners is reviewing the claims some linn-mar high school parents have filed about an assistant football coach. the parents say matt casebolt has been verbally, mentally, emotionally, and physically abusing players. the parents also filed complaints with the state against the district's athletic director and head football coach. they both oversee casebolt. this all started in december when parents from 4 families took concerns to the linn mar high school principal. the district spent more than a month investigating and interviewing dozens of people before dismissing the abuse claims the spokesperson for the parents, mark henrichs , says the group was not satisfied. " our complaints were dismissed. we believe there's evidence that we provided that these are not incidents that should have been dismissed in the manner that they were." the board of examiners said it will review the claims and determine if they meet the criteria for assigning an investigator. a high-profile trial is underway in decorah for a n accused of killing his wife.

yesterday in 41-year-old alexander fazzino's trial. he's charged with first- degree murder in the death of emily fazzino. police found her dead ininde at the coupup's home in boone back in 2012. a judge moved the trial to winneshiek county because of pre-trial publicity. emily fazzino's grandfather founded the fareway stores grocery chain. investigators are trying to find the cause of this fire at an apartment complex in cedar rapids. this is video, courtesy of viewer hayley lietz. it happened yesterday y rning at shamrock apartments off jacolyn drive southwest. one person went to the hospital. a group is urging state lawmakers to oppose a bill that would eliminate age restrictions for children to use handguns. iowans for gun safety delivered a petition yesterday to house members asking them to vote against it. the bill would allow children of any age to use handguns with adult supervision. current law prevents children under 14 from using handguns. iowans for gun safety says it expects the

johnson county sheriff lonny pulkrabek says he's disappointed lawmakers aren't taking distracted driving seriously. a bill that would have barred the use of hand- held cell phones for drivers failed to pass the funnel deadline last week. it would have also made texting while driving a primary offense. right now, law enforcement can only pull someone over for texting if the driver is violating another law. " the legislature is talking about a bunch of different things like raising the speed limit and regulating some other things... and frankly, my interest is in public safety, and their interest is, well, i'm not sure what all their interest is. " state troopers say they wrote 228 texting while driving tickets in the last 2 years. in a tv-9 follow-up this morning.. the waverly city council has made a decision on the historic 3rd avenue bridge. they voted to save the nearly 100 year old bridge in a 5 to 2 vote. city council members decided to go with a 20 year plan, but did not discuss the cost last night. the

last year because of structural problems. the cedar rapids police department wants to replace some of its sedans with s-u-vs. it says the sedans are too expensive to maintain. the gazette reports the police department has 53 vehicles in its patrol fleet. 40 are sedans, and 13 are s- u-vs the city plans to buy 12 more s-u-vs in the next fiscal yeye, if the city councici approves the police budget. police say s-u-vs have more room for technology, and they're just as fuel efficient as sedans. the dubuque police department says it's tryii to make sure there aren't any racial stops. police want the city council to traffic stopassociated with race. the department does not believe it's doing anything provide citizens with hard data. other cities in iowa have done this kind of study. "we try to be as transparent as possible. we've always given our data freely but when you put out this data, you have to have

dinosaurs ararcoming to dubuque. the national mississippi river museum will host a summer exhibit called dinosaurs unearthed. the exhibit will feature 15 robotic dinosaurs that blink, move, and make sounds that mimic the real-life prehistoric creatures, along with dinosaur skeletons. the exhibit opens may 14th and will run through october.
