we're going to get to the top story, the devastating earthquake that's developing overnight in italy. most residents were asleep. >> some were buried in the collapsing buildings. the epicenter is about 100 miles north of rome. because there's only six miles deep, it was felt over a wide area off a large portion of central italy. the greatest damage was in the centl where many buildings collapsed. we're going to get a better idea of the extent of the damage as the sun comes up over there. already one mayor says more than half his town is gone. a bridge is danger of collapse. there were some deaths but the number is not known. >> one report says a family of four was killed while they were sleeping. electricity, gas and phone

and roads are blocked by debris. they had an earthquake three years ago. >> the state department is asking people to contact their family and friends as soon as possible, checking in on social media as well. you look at some of these early images that we're getting. you're getting a sense this was a devastating earthquake for central italy. >> the civil protection agency there is already calling the quake severe, 6.2 magnitude. the usgs is saying seven aftershock sometimes the aftershocks can be nearly as damaging or sometimes more than the quake itself. a very developing story here for you. we'll continue to monitor it for you. we'll switch gears and move to politics. hillary clinton has opened up a 16 point lead over donald trump in the key battle ground state of virginia. >> trump is hoping to gain ground as he has a string of attacks accusing clinton for swapping access to her

relatives visiting people in the mountains. this is a mountainous central part of italy among the mountains and on either side of the mountains. people traditionally go to the beach in the summer and also the mountains where it's much cooler. you'll have many families, extended families there. and the great challenge is the location and getting there. that's the big issue right now. because so many roads have been blocked due to falling rocks and downed trees. bridges collapsing. this is going -- a major challenge for rescue workers to get to these areas on time. >> how equipped are they to deal with this again? >> they are much better than they were seven years ago where they came under tremendous criticism for not being ready for such a tremendous natural disaster. i mean, italy gets thousands of tremors every year. it's on a major fault line.

good wednesday morning. i'm kendis gibson. >> i'm diane macedo. we begin with breaking news. a deadly earthquake caused significant damage in central italy. this is the epicenter of the quake about 100 miles northeast of rome. it was felt across a broad section of central italy including the capital. >> here's what we're learning. the quake struck in the middle of the night, about 3:30 in the morning local time. they're six hours ahead of the east coast of the united states, by the way. many residents ran into the streets and spent the rest of the night outside as several aftershocks rocked the area. other people were caught in collapsing buildings. there are deaths, we should tell you. it's too early for the exact numbers at this point. the italian government says the damage is severe. and they are sending heavy equipment to clear the debris. one mayor says half his town is gone. on twitter the state department is urging americans in italy to check in on social media to

destination. especially for italians seeking cool mountain air at the height of summer. the last major quake in italy was in 2009, also in the center part of the country, killing more than 300 people. of course we'll follow the developments as they wake up on the other side of the world and we start to see the damage reports and possibility of casualties come in. >> we're already hearing settled. we'll hold off on reporting them for a little bit. let's move to politics. donald trump admitting for the first time that he may be open to softening his stance on immigration. >> trump is not backing away from his promise to build a wall. at a late night rally in austin, texas, he brought out border control agents and mothers whose children were murdered by illegal immigrants. he's hammering clinch on

foundation and the state department. we get the latest from abc. >> reporter: an aboutface on immigration from donald trump. during a town hall, the nominee said this -- >> there can be a softening because we're not looking to hurt people. we want people -- we have some great people in this country. >> reporter: a hard turn from trump's hard-line on immigration throughout the campaign. with plans to build that border wall and promises to remove all undocumented immigrants, including families. >> we're going to have a deportation force and do it humanely. >> reporter: within the last week that stance slowly disappearing. at one point trump seeming to praise president obama. >> obama got tremendous numbers of people out of the country. bush, the same thing. lots of people brought out of the country with the existing laws. i'm going to do the same thing. >> reporter: at the same time, trump opening up a new line of attack against hillary clinton, calling for special prosecutor to investigate her dealings with clinton foundation donors while she was secretary of state.
