dead following a strong earthquake in italy. a magnitude 6-point-2 earthquake rocked the central part of the country early this morning, collapsing homes on top of people as they slept. we'll have more on the developments there in just a bit. iowa city students will head back to school in just a few hours.

some iowa city schools could make it a little more stressful. kcrg-tv nine's brea love went to the intersection of 1st avenue and bradford drive. brea, what kind of construction did you see there? well chris and nicole, the city is completely redoing 1st avenue. first avenue from bradford drive to mall drive is closed. this closure affects city high school, tate high school, and especially south east jr. high. there's a lot going on just to the right of south east jr. high school. that isn't overcoming students ready for their first day of 7th or 8th grade. but it could slow them down. 7:51 "there's no pedestrian, bike, or vehicle access coming from the south. we've reached out to all parents, if their student is bus eligible they should ride the bus. a lot of our students if the weather is nice they will choose to ride their bikes or walk, but if they're coming from the south there won't be any safe place to cross the railroad tracks." with first avenue closed, bradford drive traffic will go up significantly. parents who choose to drop off need to take their students to mercer aquatic center next door. that way students can use the sidewalk to get to the building. 8:33 "our concern is if parents are pulling up on the street and

grieving the loss of her boyfriend. but she is grateful for her neighbor, who rescued her. "he was trying to get that ladder fixed and i'm like, just catch me, just catch me somebody just catch me" " the cedar rapids fire department plans to nominate her neighbor for one of the state's lifesaving awards next year. a jury will soon decide if a waterloo man is guilty of 1st degree murder. yesterday, jurors heard closing arguments in the trial of perquondis holmes, who is 25 years old. prosecutors say holmes fired gunshots at a apartment building's parking lot in november 20- 13. the shots killed daequan campbell, who was 18. this is the second time holmes is on trial for the death. a judge threw out his previous conviction because the trial included evidence that jurors weren't supposed to see. polk county investigators are trying to learn how 2 people and their dog died inside their home. polk county deputies found them around 4 o'clock yesterday afternoon. the family had asked authorities to do a welfare check. investigators have not

this new trailer. they call it "convoy for a cure." they say the pink trailer with 12 colorful cancer ribbons will grab the attention of other drivers, raising awareness.
