and we say good tuesday morning, everyone. we're going to get started with the race for the white house. it appears to be tightening up. >> the latest monmouth university poll shows clinton seven points ahead of donald trump among likely voters. that's down from 13 percentage points, a lead she had just a few weeks ago after the conventions. >> and more voters have a favorable view of clinton compared to trump, 33% to case creates an unfortunate case of deja vu for hillary clinton's top aide and provides ammunition for donald trump. kenneth moton has the latest. >> reporter: this morning, donald trump is increasing attacks on hillary clinton's closest aide, huma abedin announced her split monday from disgraced former new york congressman anthony weiner caught up in yet another sexting scandal. >> she's married to a guy that is uncontrolled and uncontrollable. he's a sick person, and she has access to classified information.

statement saying after a long and painful consideration and work on my marriage, i have made the decision to separate from my husband. weiner is back in the tabloids after "the new york post" published raunchy pictures allegedly sent by weiner to a woman identified only as a 40 something divorcee and trump supporter. weiner resigned from congress in 2011 in embarrass many. he accidentally tweeted a lewd photo of himself. >> i'm here today again to apologize. >> reporter: the sexting allegations from several women piled up and abedin stayed by her husband's side. >> i love him. i have forgiven him. i believe in him. >> reporter: their marriage was featured in a documentary on weiner's scandal and his failed run for new york city mayor in 2013. >> it's like living a nightmare. >> reporter: the relationship and abedin's closeness to clinton has been a line of attack for months for trump. abedin is also at the center of newly released state department e-mails raising questions about her role in setting up

state. diane and kendis, while donald trump is responding to abedin and weiner's split, hillary clinton is not. abedin who has been with the democratic nominee on a fund-raising swing in the hampt hamptons, well, she did not attend any of her events yesterday. >> that's abc's kenneth moton for us in washington. kenneth, thank you. and it appears donald trump's former campaign manager isn't really out of the fold. sources tell abc news trump and corey lewandowski speak almost every day. their relationship is now lewandowski was fired in june with the gop candidate lagging in the polls. he was then hired by cnn shortly afterwards as a political commentator. and the senate's top democrat wants the fbi to look into possible russian tampering with the u.s. election results. minority leader harry reid sent a letter to bureau chief james comey. it claims mounting evidence of a connection between the russian government and donald trump's presidential campaign. reid went on to say the public

and on that note, the fbi is also alerting states to keep a close watch on their voting systems after uncovering two cases of russian hacking. the cyberattacks targeted voter registration systems in arizona in june and illinois last month. reports indicate no data was tampered with in either instance but the illinois case reportedly is the first successful compromise of a state voter registration database. well, today is primary day in arizona, and longtime senator john mccain appears to be in t the five-term incumbent is facing two challengers for his seat. he's up in most of the polls that we're seeing, but he is also looking at the prospect of a tough general election fight. mccain also does not have the support at the top of the republican ticket. donald trump declining to endorse him. several states are bracing for severe weather now. >> well, for one we have two tropical depressions that are south of florida, both expected to become tropical storms in the next few days.

toward northern florida. >> residents in the tampa/st. petersburg area are already filling sandbags and getting ready for heavy rain there, as well. >> and then there's depression 8, which is moving up the east coast toward north carolina's outer banks and expected to become a tropical storm later today. beachgoers actually already seeing rough surf and rip currents there with heavy rain ahead. more now from abc's ginger zee. >> reporter: td 8, as you see on the map there, that's they don't get a name until they become a storm and this looks like tropical warnings in place. the storm that is now dropping quite a bit of rain for south florida through cuba, well, that one has to become a tropical storm and then make its northeastward turn between tallahassee and tampa. >> well, there's also nasty weather in the pacific with a hurricane watch for hawaii's big island for hurricane madeline, that's a category 3 storm and hurricane lester, a more powerful category 4 is further out and not an immediate threat to land.

the false alarm that shut down l.a.x. are now focusing on 911 calls. there were several of those calls from multiple terminals, all reporting shots fired, and while those reports turned out not to be true, they still spread by word of mouth and on social media, and it took two hours for police to finally say all was clear. in all 200 flights were delayed and three people were even hurt in the incident from getting trampled. passengers on a southwest airlines flight got scare in albuquerque. their flight to nver was evacuated after a suspicious package was spotted in the cabin. the boeing 737 taxied to a remote part of the airport and was searched. luckily investigators didn't find anything dangerous on the plane. secretary of state john kerry making headlines this morning suggesting the media can play a role in reducing terrorism by reducing its coverage of attacks. speaking in bangladesh, kerry echoed comments that he made last year at the united nations. he says the media might do

cover terrorism so much, but kerry cautions there may be no single answer as to why someone becomes a terrorist. well, the u.s. is warning two key allies in the middle east to stop fighting each other and instead focus on isis. this comes after a series of clashes between turkey and kurdish forces in syria over the weekend. the issues likely to come up when president obama and the turkish president holds face-to-face talks this weekend. the italian coast guard is reporting one of the biggest migrant rescues to date. the agency teamed up with a few other groups to pull 6500 mike grants from overcrowded boats off the coast of libya. those rescued are said to be from somalia and eritrea. the u.n. says more than 100,000 migrants have been rescued so far this year. the entertainment world is mourning the loss of a genius. gene wilder starred in several comedy classics including "young frankenstein" and "blazing saddles." he started his career on the stage but rose to fame in all those funny movies. >> wilder was married to comedienne gilda radner in

both men were treated at the hospital for some minor injuries. chicago is heading toward a record no city wants. during the month of august there have been more than 400 people shot and at least 78 homicides making august the city's most violent month in nearly 20 years. so far this year chicago has had more murders and shootings than new york and los angeles combined. and the white house is now weighing in on 49ers quarterback colin kaepernick's protest of the national anthem. a spokesman calls kaepernick's refusal to stand for the anthem, that he is entitled to express his views. in a radio interview, donald trump also offered his take saying maybe kaepernick should find a country that works better for him, and trump added, that won't happen. facing mounting criticism over pricing, the makers of the epipen will offer a cheaper generic version. drugmaker mylan plans to start selling the generic version of the life-saving allergy drug within weeks for $300 for a

>> well, police are hunting for his killers. a young life may have ended because an apology wasn't enough. abc's gio benitez with more. >> reporter: a murder mystery rocking an ivy league school. the search is on for people who stabbed two ithaca college students on cornell's campus early sunday morning killing one. >> be advised. i have two patients. part number one, unresponsive. stabbed in the upper left quadrant of the chest. >> reporter: police say 19-year-old anthony nazaire and a friend both from ithaca college were both attending a student organized party at cornell when a brawl broke out. >> his friend bumped a girl by accident and he apologized. the both of them apologized. even my brother apologized. >> reporter: police say they do not believe there is any current threat to safety on campus and they're continuing to investigate what happened. >> we've had a lot of videos that have been submitted by folks that were in the area. >> reporter: gio benitez, abc

intervening several witnesses that someone may have captured the killing on video. two u.s. pilots are free on bail after being charged with attempting to fly while under the influence of alcohol. they were identified in court documents as carlos licona and paul grebenc. the united pilots were arrested saturday morning as they tried to check in at scotland's glasgow airport shortly before takeoff to newark. travels deaths have seen their largest spike in decades. newly released government finds that deaths from auto accidents rose 7.2% last year. the last time there was such a large single year increase was 1966. officials say the increase can be attributed to more people driving. and we're getting our first look at dramatic video from a ten-car pileup in central new york. this is in binghamton. now, police are using the video from a citizen's dash camera to help identify the bystanders who saved a woman from her car that was caught on fire.
