tonight: storms become likely. heavy rain is making news in america this morning, the presidential candidates in some sharp exchanges as they focus on the crucial battleground states. tonight hillary clinton and donald trump get a chance to talk national security in back-to-back tv appearances. breaking overnight, murder suspect recaptured back in custody this morning after days on the run in the las vegas area. tough ta a from the coach of the u.s. hockey team about to head to a big international tournament. his players are now being told, do not protest the national anthem. and cha-ching, a hefty golden nugget found in the golden state. coming up, the reason experts say more pieces like this could be found. a good wednesday morning, i'm diane macedo.

we begin with the ultra tight race for the white house. donald trump and hillary clinton are preparing to talk national security set to appear separately tonight in a televised forum. >> that discussion follows the latest tit for tat on the campaign trail. we turn to abc's maggie rulli in washington for the latest. maggie, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, guys. as new polls show the race for the white house tightening, both candidates are ratcheting up their attacks and narrowing their campaigns in on where it's going to count the most. both candidates are focusing in on key battleground states. hillary clinton wrapping up yesterday in florida where she accused trump of insulting america's veterans. >> his whole campaign has been one long insult to all those who have worn the uniform to protect our most cherished american values. >> reporter: and of lacking any real foreign policy plans.

is, he has no plan. >> reporter: donald trump bashing clinton right back while in north carolina calling out clinton's use of a private e-mail server. >> hillary clinton has taught us all how much of a problem we have by cybersecurity. >> reporter: and saying he's the candidate who can unite america. >> imagine what our country could accomplish if we started working toward one people under one god. >> reporter: and with less than three weeks until the first official presidential debate, the two candidates squared off in back-to-back interviews with abc's david muir pressing clinton about her family's foundation. >> let's look at the trump foundation that was just fined by the irs. the clinton foundation has just been judged by an independent watchdog called the charity navigator to have the highest score. >> reporter: and trump on his immigration policy. >> what's going to happen is if you're going to be a citizen, you're going to have to leave and you're going to have to come

whole campaign to demonize immigrants, to call mexicans rapists and criminals, to do everything he could to stir up all kinds of bad feelings about hard-working people, and he didn't raise it, so he did choke. >> clinton also told reporters that trump sometimes gets a pass because people expect less from him. >> the obama administration has acknowledged that a $1.7 billion payment to iran earlier this year was made entirely in cash. the treasury department says the payments in non-u.s. currency were necessary because sanctions had isolated iran from the international financial system. critics have called the payments ransom for the release of american hostages, but the white house insists that the money was a settlement for a decades old arbitration. president obama is wrapping up his historic two-day visit to laos. he's holing a town hall tile event this morning with young people. earlier the president toured a rehab center that treats survivors of bops the u.s.

the president announced a $90 million program to clear unexploded bombs in the country. we have breaking news from las vegas now. a murder suspect who managed to escape police custody has been recaptured. alonso perez had been a subject of an intense manhunt by both police and the fbi. he escaped from an interview room from police headquarters last week and somehow managed to outside a mcdonald's. a judge has ruled bill cosby will stand trial in a pennsylvania sex assault case setting a june deadline for the trial to start. >> now the big question whether 13 additional accusers will be allowed to testify. abc's danya bacchus has more. >> reporter: bill cosby back in court tuesday learning he will go to trial in june of 2017 to face charges of drugging and sexually assaulting former temple university employee andrea constand at his home in 2004.

and use a phone call recorded by constand's mother. >> the call should come in. it's a call that was made into canada, and it was legally obtained there, and we should be able to use it. >> reporter: cosby's lawyers trying to keep that evidence out of the case wanting to suppress several days of testimony cosby gave in the accuser's lawsuit a decade ago where he acknowledged giving constand several pills and wine before what he calls a consensual sexual encounter. his attorneys claiming cosby is the victim of racial bias and prejudice saying he's already been tried in the court of public opinion. >> to accept the assumption of guilty by numbers or guilt by volume is really the same thing as accepting the assumption of guilt before innocence. >> reporter: danya bacchus, abc news, los angeles. hurricane newton is moving up the baja california peninsula causing some damage power

two people are dead and three missing after a shrimp boat capsized in the gulf of california. newton is expected to reach the u.s. border as a tropical storm by midday today. parts of arizona and new mexico will get several inches of rain with the threat of flash floods and landslides. and this may send more gold diggers to california. a prospector found a gold nugget the size of a steak. it weighs about 18 ounces and could be worth $70,000 when melted down. >> he said t-bone steak, we think filet mignon. not surprisingly, the prospector isn't saying exactly where he found the nugget and isn't giving interviews. the severe california drought has sparked a modern day gold rush with more gold diggers heading into the dried up riverbeds. coming up, apple's big day. what we can expect from the company's unveiling event. plus, the fallout at fox news now that a former anchor's sexual harassment suit against her former boss has been settled. and the coach sending a message to his players about

checking our top stories, hillary clinton and donald trump are taking part in a national security forum tonight. they're now running neck and neck and ratcheting up attacks on the campaign trail. a murder suspect who escaped police custody in las vegas has been recaptured. alonso perez had been the subject of an intense manhunt by police and the fbi after somehow breaking his handcuffs and getting away undetected. hurricane newton is working its way north from mexico and expected to cross into the u.s. around midday. by then it will probably be a tropical storm and drop several inches of rain on arizona and new mexico. looking at the rest of today's weather, there will be rain in the pacific northwest and strong storms and flooding in the upper midwest. showers are also possible in the lower mississippi valley. finally, it was a star-studded event last night, the premiere of the movie about what became known as the miracle on the hudson. >> the movie is called "sully"
