domain to acquire property rights for it. they're also concerned about possible harm to the environment. the pipeline will go through 18 counties in iowa. after their hearing this morning at the boone county courthouse, protesters are holding a news conference detailing their plan to fight the pipeline. yesterday dozens of members of the resistance coalition protested in des moines. they delivered a petition with 33,000 signatures to people from the department of justice at the federal courthouse. they are calling on presiden reject pending permits and rescind existing permits for the pipeline. last week, the obama administration temporarily halted construction of a part of the pipeline in north dakota. the iowa supreme court is deciding whether to weigh in on a lawsuit pitting des moines water works against upstream farmers. the farmers are accused of contaminating rivers with nitrates from fertilizer. the justices heard arguments yesterday in the case, which asks the court to decide

immunity from the lawsuit. if not, the water utility can ask for monetary damages. water works officials say removing excess nitrate from water cost one point five million dollars last year. the agency sued three northwest iowa counties that oversee 10 drainage districts. the lawsuit is on hold until the iowa supreme court makes its ruling. neighbors in iowa city must wait a little longer to find out if a plan to build a house resembling forward. the iowa city board of adjustment postponed its decision on whether to let a decorah couple build the home. the neighbors of manville heights association and some property owners in the area are appealing the city's building permit. one person says that construction of the kinnick-style house would negatively impact the health, welfare and safety of the neighborhood. meetings will continue next wednesday. mount vernon school's superintendent wants to know why a bond issue failed so badly with voters. a 15-point-9 million dollar bond

arts and athletics complexes, plus renovations to classrooms. only 36 percent of voters said yes. the superintenden t says the district will ask why approval was so low. "we have to look at what the public tells us. we'll be surveying folks. we'll probably have some other opportunities for people to explain." o'malley says the district can't put the bond on the ballot again for six months. iowa biw dollars to provide opportunities to students in the cedar rapids area. the program gives students a capstone like experience through a real world project. iowa big recently applied for grant money through the x-q super school project, which had a bus tour through cedar rapids. that project encourages people to rethink the high school experience. it didn't win the grand prize. but organizers liked iowa big and will give the program one million

and new horseback riding area are just a few of the renovations girl scouts can now enjoy in north liberty. the camp is showing off the updates today at a ribbon cutting ceremony. the changes create a central resident-camp property. this summer, the camp hosted more than 1,300 girls, nearly double the number from last year. people in cedar rapids can now use an interactive tool to see where the city's money comes from and where it goes. the city launched open gov. it shows the city's revenue and expenses, dating back can see how much the city gets from the streets local option sales tax, or how much it spends on police and fire. the city says it lets you visualize data, instead of just seeing rows of numbers. the city also has its annual budget and other financial documents available on its website. a dubuque man is facing charges today for a fight 3 years ago after a concert in wisconsin. the sheriff's office in crawford county wisconsin says anthony runde and joshua milligan had a grudge against

fighting at the rock on the river concert in bridgeport township, wisconsin. later, officers found milligan unconscious with head injuries in a campsite area near the concert. after a 3-year investigation, officers arrested runde tuesday. runde faces charges of attempted homicide and aggravated battery. prosecutors say robert stern killed his daughter who has autism because she was a burden. that was part of opening statement in stern's murder trial, which continues today. robert stern has pleaded not guilty to first degree in june of 2015, police say he admitted to shooting every round of three guns at his daughter, kimberly stern, killing her in the home they shared. she was 27. prosecutors say stern admitted to police officers that he killed her. then on the way to the police station, stern faked a medical emergency so they took him to the hospital. that's where they say officers were going to record stern confessing he killed his daughter because she quote "pushed his

hit record on his cell phone to capture that confession. police described stern as frail and confused when he was talking to them. "as passed by him through the kitchen, mr. stern made a couple of statements, as i am passing by. one was, ' i am dying of cancer'. the other is, 'i heard voices'." stern's attorney described kimberly as having severe autism. stern's wife had recently died, and he'd become kimberly's only care provider. the defense says kimberly diagnosis. iowa senator chuck grassley say people who are in the country illegally should not be driving. he re-emphasized on his stance during his weekly conference call yesterday. grassley was talking about a man who he says had been living in the u-s illegally. that man, fernando aguilar, was involved in a crash last week that killed lea phann , a 12 year old girl from des moines. grassley says he's requested aguilar's immigration records from the department of homeland security.
