ek. night: mostly clear. wind: s 5-10 w61 alo: 62 breaking news in america this morning -- another explosion in the new york city area has the nation's largest metropolis on edge. authorities working to find out if that new blast is connected to the others that rattled nerves in both new york and new jersey. we're live. >> those explosions come as new york for the start of the annual united nations general assembly. security concerns are much higher than usual for that event right now. security also high at the emmy awards. emotions running high for tv's biggest night. the winners, surprises, and the show's top moments ahead. and a close call for a race official. he thought no cars were coming.

good monday morning, everyone. we have major developments in the string of explosive devices in new york and new jersey. >> a device found last night near a railroad station in elizabeth, new jersey, exploded overnight. it was one of five devices discovered inside a backpack in a garbage can. it detonated when a bomb squad was working to disarm it. >> so that happened around the same time, get this, that five people were taken into custody in connection with saturday's explosion in manhattan. the scene there from elizabeth, new jersey, at this hour. those five people were picked up during a traffic stop at the verrazano bridge. this is the scene. this was the scene on the belt parkway last night during that investigation where those five people were taken into custody just for questioning. it's not clear what their connection might have been. >> we have video from inside a

away from the manhattan blast. no one inside the restaurant was hurt. when listening to the blast, you can hear it very clearly. they stayed surprisingly calm. watching that video. >> so many people in the new york area were on edge and remain on edge. all of this happening as the u.n. general assembly is set to begin in just a few hours. >> the normally tight security has been increased even more, as world leaders, including president obama, arrive in new york city. abc's ray raimundi joins us from the scene of saturday's bombing, manhattan's chelsea neighborhood. >> reporter: security is very tight here in this area. ahead of the world leaders coming here. we know multiple law enforcement agencies are telling abc news that the explosion in manhattan actually right behind me, and the one that happened in seaside park in new jersey on saturday

to be similar cell phones used to detonate those devices. those arrests are happening right now or those five individuals are being questioned by fbi agents right now. the new york metro area. on edge this morning. another device discovered overnight in new jersey. just miles away from new york city. five devices found inside of a backpack. one of them exploding after bomb experts attempted to disarm it. this while authorities say it was right near the verrazano bridge late sunday night where fbi agents stopped what they call a vehicle of interest connected to the bombings. federal authorities trying to get a clearer picture as to who is responsible for placing the device in the manhattan neighborhood. the explosion. the chaos all happening on a balmy saturday night. law enforcement on the hunt. >> the evidence we've collected is being taken to our lab at quantico for review. and we're following every viable

>> reporter: piece by piece, investigators are analyzing every particle of debris left, including looking closely at this dumpster. twisted and mangled in the aftermath of the explosion. >> it was louder than thunder. but i could feel like -- it was just a large boom. where the building kind of shook. >> i got some type of explosion inside of a garbage can. >> reporter: meanwhile, federal authorities looking into whether a pipe bomb which exploded in this trash can 60 miles away in new jersey is related to the bombings in new york city. >> the pressure cookers. that they were certainly similar in construct. >> reporter: the explosions and a stabbing rampage over the weekend in a minnesota mall which investigators are calling a potential act of terrorism sparking renewed fears across the country. and in light of those new fears, we understand that law enforcement officials here in new york city are urging everyone to be vigilant and to report anything suspicious here

>> and ray, so many ens dents on so many scenes right now. let's get back to the story we were talking about. what's happening in elizabeth, new jersey. what are you learning from your post? >> reporter: yeah, kendis. what we can tell you, and what we have learned from law enforcement officials is that one of the five devices found in that backpack -- bomb squad experts were trying to disarm one of them, to cut wires, that's when it exploded. we understand that this explosion was not controlled. but thankfully, no one was hurt and no one was around the area at the time of this explosion. we do know that law enforcement agents are trying to go through surveillance video to see who exactly placed that device there in elizabeth, new jersey. we understand shrapnel and other evidence from that explosion are now being sent to fbi headquarters in quantico in hopes of piecing together this investigation. diane and kendis, back to you. >> we hear so often see something, say something. sounds like in that case, that may have saved lives. so far, none of the cases

looking at important clues. >> former fbi special agent in charge and abc news contributor steve gomez takes a look at who might be responsible. >> the profile is definitely somebody who was willing to plan and to basically develop these types of bombs. the more we're learning about the devices, the more it seems there's some sophistication. it would require some kind of research, some planning. and there's information online. and quad and isis have put a lot of that on the internet to where people here in the u.s. could research and try to develop the devices themselves. in this case, we saw, new york city, one that went off. one that did not. so that's typical of the kinds of people that are just trying to do it themselves. so they're probably people that are trying to do it on their own, using the internet to research and then develop. >> our thanks to steve gomez there. the presidential candidates are reacting to the explosions

>> donald trump tweeted overnight that he'll make america safe again. he's blaming the policies of president obama and hillary clinton for not protecting the the country after the blasts went off in new york. trump immediately called that a bomb. clinton said she wanted to wait for the fact. she later condemned the incidents as apparent terrorist attacks. a stabbing in a minnesota mall is being looked at as a potential act of terror as well. saturday's attack in st. cloud left nine people wounded. all are expected to be okay. isis is claiming the attacker was a quote soldier of the islamic state. the suspect has not been officially identified. reports describe him as a 22-year-old former college student born in somalia. central minnesota's somali community has condemned the attack. in other news, the crisis in syria is at the top of the agenda later today when the u.n. general assembly meets here in new york.

killed syrian troops this weekend in an errant air strike. the mistake led to harsh criticism from syria and russia. secretary of state kerry fired back, accusing russia of grandstanding and showboating. it wasn't on water but it was the coast guard to the rescue in oregon. a hiker had injuries to her head and leg and needed to be air-lifted from the trail, about 17 miles inland. the coast guard couldn't get a helicopter in there saturday night because of conditions. the rescue mission was it was television's biggest night. the primetime emmy awards being handed out in l.a. let's get to some of the winners. >> hbo was a big winner. the series, "veep" repeated as best comedy series. as did its star, julia louis-dreyfus who won a report sixth emmy for best comedy actress. >> another repeat winner?

also watch out for wet roads along the great lakes and pacific northwest. if you're flying, expect airport delays in charlotte, washington, philadelphia, new york, and boston. updating our breaking news right now, more explosive devices have turned up overnight in the greater new york city area. five of them found in a backpack near a train station in elizabeth, new jersey. >> one of those devices actually detonated as police were trying to dism no one was injured. amtrak service in the area was suspended. five people have also been questioned in connection with saturday's explosion in manhattan. they were detained after a traffic stop in brooklyn last night. but so far, no one has been charged. >> an official tells "the new york times" that all or most of the five people in custody may have been from the same family and may have been on their way to the airport. 29 people were injured in manhattan over the weekend. and a second device was found just a few blocks away.

street, with things -- with wires coming out of it. and then the wires went into like there was something the size of a cell phone. and i thought, that looks like a child's science experiment that they threw out. >> that's the woman that found a second device in new york city. investigators are trying to determine if the new york attack was linked to an earlier explosion in seaside heights, new jersey. a small plane crashed into an arizona house this weekend. no one was seriously hurt. you can see the plane on its way down. as that fireball in the who managed to bail out before impact. no one in the home was hurt either. the pilot suffered burns. but he's expected to be okay. he told officials the wings were on fire before that crash. and there was a close call at the singapore grand prix for a race marshal. a quick restart of the race after a crash caught him and everyone else by surprise. he was told it would be safe to go out on the track and pick up one last bit of debris from that accident.

>> abc producer joshua hoyas is there on the scene in new jersey. the fbi field office for that area in newark just released a series of tweets and updates. what are we hearing? >> that's right. at this point, what we're hearing from the fbi in newark is that the area has been rendered safe and secure. there was a big question for a long period of time about the number of devices that was still around. one device did -- was detonated by officers. at this point, no other updates on the other four. the area is cu >> and joshua, what is it like at the scene? you arrived shortly after the detonation. what is the tone there? >> no, the area is still very tense, diane. there's a lot of security coming through. a lot of different agencies, fire trucks. the sheriff's department. the area is still on high alert. even though we've gotten the okay from the fbi. >> and josh, this is also, we say that it's a rail station.
