closed their case after calling to the witness stand several experts from the iowa division of criminal investigation. prosecutors say robert stern considered his daughter a burden and that she quote "pushed his buttons." they say he killed her so he could make more time in his life for a waitress he was infatuated with. stern's defense attorneys also rested their case but did not call any witnesses to the stand or present any evidence. "to ask for first degree murder based on one statement? she pushed my buttons. " stern's attorney says prosecutors were not able to prove stern was the one who actually shot and killed kimberly. the trial of this man is also in the hands of a jury today. david miller is charged with first degree murder in the death of sabrina janish. investigators say they found her body strangled and stabbed multiple times in the driveway of a home north of shellsburg last year. after spending the day in iowa,

and hillary clinton are onto their next campaign events. republican mike pence is in williamsburg, virginia today. yesterday, he spoke at giese manufacturing in dubuque. like trump, the indiana governor talked about how to prevent homegrown terrorism after bombings in the new york area. he also said the federal government should be more careful about who it allows into the country. " compared to hillary clinton's plan to expand our refugee program by 550%, when donald trump becomes president of the united states, we will have extreme vetting from immigrants coming frm refugee program coming from syria until we know who those people are." earlier, pence met with supporters at the music man square in mason city. democrat tim kaine is in los angles today, taping episodes of the ellen show and jimmy kimmel live. yesterday, kaine spoke at

encouraging younger voters to get out on election day. he also went after donald trump. ""donald trump has had a passion through his whole life too, but the problem is that passion is donald j. trump. nothing about anybody else. nothing about a policy that matters to him. his entire passion has been looking out for number one." kaine also talked about the democratic party's plan to try and make college more affordable by easing the process of refinancing with the election now seven weeks away, a lot of iowa counties are making sure voting equipment works. state law requires a test. johnson county started testing its machines this week. the voting machines are about ten years old, but the county says it's confident the equipment will work on election day. johnson county plans to spend about one million dollars for new machines next year. "we're asking for around a million dollars, hopefully it will come in 2 or 3 hundred thousand dollars less

equipment we want." all ballots in iowa still require pen and paper. weipert says that actually helps keep voting secure. a drug resistant form of lice may have followed eastern iowa students back to school. there are cases of lice every year, but now those cases are becoming more prevalent and difficult. kcrg-tv nine's brea love joins us now. brea, what is this type of lice outbreak that's growing in the u-s? chris and nicole, it's called super lice. bug and they're currently found in 48 states. iowa is one of those. drug resistant lice is something cedar rapids schools have seen before. lice is most commonly found on the elementary level, but can be found in middle and high schools as well. schools do not do classroom head checks anymore, but if a student is feeling itchy a nurse will check them out. if any live nits are found, the school must notify the parent, and there's protocol in place. 48:50 "the parent gets a copy of that so they know what the treatment

notify parents there is a case of head lice in your child's classroom, please check your child's head. " lice is considered a nuisance not a health problem, so it's not reccommended for students to miss school. it's just best to do whatever you can to stop it from spreading. so that means, if you have lice making sure to follow the two week treatment process correctly, and of course no sharing hats or touching heads. chris and nicole, avoiding activities like those can make all the a plane filled with 87 veterans is leaving the eastern iowa airport this morning. it's for the 25th eastern iowa honor flight to washington d-c. the veterans will spend the day touring the various memorials built and dedicated to their service. today, the veterans will also lay a wreath on the tomb of

waterloo is applying for a grant to pay for replacing ash trees the city cuts down. the city council has approved asking the northeast iowa community foundation for more than 15-thousand dollars. the city is in process of removing thousands of trees before emerald ash borers infect them. the invasive beetle made its way into the area in 2014. the iowa county conservation board recently discovered the species at lake iowa park in ladora. the insect has now made its state. most of them are in southeast iowa. with protests against the bakken oil pipeline leading to plenty of arrests last month near boone, now far southeast iowa is a flashpoint for people to gather. protesters rallied along the mississippi river last weekend -- along with yesterday. over the weekend, around 200 protesters showed up at a construction site in lee county, just not of keokuk. most were peaceful, but law officers cited 38 adults and 6 minors for walking through a line of private

dubuque could put solar panels onto more city buildings to cut the use of electricity and to prode proposals to install solar panels on several buildings. that's according to our coverage partner, k-d- t-h. the city wants to install panels on its six fire stations, the carnegie- stout public library and at the dubuque regional airport. so it's asking companies to submit proposals that detail where panels should go, how much they would cost and how much electricity they would produce. proposals are due october 20th. right now, only the city's municipal services building has

hospital. he's charged with attempted murder after shooting two police officers -- as well as getting shot during the exchange. authorities think he may be the one responsible for a bomb that exploded on saturday in new jersey and another in new york. as abc's maggie rulli reports, he's not cooporating with police. the manhunt started here in this new york neighborhood and took police to outside a bar in new jersey... where it ended in a dramatic scene. pkg nats gunfire crossing two states the

gunfire "there's a guy shooting a gun, shots fired, shots fired" unfolding just three hours after police sent a text alert and released an image of the suspect: 28- year-old ahmad khan rahami the owner of this bar in linden new jersey sees a man sleeping in his hallway and calls the police... the officer immediatly recognizes the suspect "within a matter of seconds, the suspect fired on him. rahami flees on foot with a gun in hand shooting randomly.. as other police officers pursue him nats officer: one with multiple shots, the officer's awake. the officers fire back... bringing down rahami - who's now recovering in the hospital. nats up:eyewitness: "oh, man, it was wild!" the first device exploded on this new jersey boardwalk... nats: "shut down the run, get them out of the boardwalk." then this powerful blast rocked a manhattan neighborhood. nats up video "boom" three hours later, a pressure cooker is found just 4 blocks north... and the next night, five pipe bombs are found at this new jersey train station. and as police try to disarm them... video surveillance and information gathered from that unexploded bomb led police to rahami. we now know rahami is a naturalized american citizen born in afghanistan... and the fbi found more bombs when they searced his apartment. officials also tell abc news that rahami travelled to afghanistan and
