charlotte, north carolina, set off a lot of overnight protests. authorities say officers shot an armed man at an apartment complex. several officers were reportedly hurt during the protests. the charlotte mayor identified the man police shot and killed yesterday as keith scott. police say it happened while officers were looking for a different person named in a warrant. officers saw a man get out of a car with a gun, according to a police statement. police say scott, who is black, got back into to his car and officers out again. that's when police shot at him, sending scott to the hospital where he later died. one protester says police could have handled the situation differently. "there was a terrorist - new jersey, new york - he was taken alive. they said they wanted to question him. so because you wanted to question him, does his life mean more than our black men across the nation? it doesn't make any sense." " " our officers are ok. we don't know exactly how many officers fired, but we know at least one officer fired and the rounds were fatal."

involved as brentley vinson. the mayor says vinson is now on paid administrative leave. the waterloo community playhouse is using its production of to kill a mockingbird, as a time to discuss race relations. the theater is recreating the story about racial injustice as part of its 100th anniversary season. organizers say they wanted to invite people to come and talk about racial issues and themes that come up in the play. they say a lot of themes in to kill a mocking bird the play is set in the 1930s. "we thought that we had healed a lot of the wounds of racism and what's happening now a lot of people are pulling back the veil to find out that we really haven't come as far as we thought we had so perhaps the time has come to discuss it again and see what we can do to actually move forward." "it's a famous story and has a lot of racial implications that are coming even more to light today, so it's a very relevant piece and it's a good

organizers say it's important to have discussions to address the current race relations. the play runs through september 25. the university of iowa is aslo taking a deeper look at how safe students feel on its campus, focusing on concerns about sexual misconduct. the university of iowa is releasing the results of its campus climate survey today. the survey looks at students' experiences with sexual harassment, dating violence, stalking and sexual violence. the university is also sharing on campus. students and others throughout iowa city developed the plan. students took the survey last year. the university had 4 reported of sexual assault on campus last year. university police say anyone who believes they may be a victim of sexual misconduct should call them at 335-5022. people in iowa city are again looking to the city for a decision on whether a kinnick stadium-style house will happen.

decision on whether to let a decorah couple build the home last week. today, members will reconsider an appeal on the city's building permit. neighbors say the kinnick- style house would negatively impact the health, welfare and safety of the neighborhood. becoming a mother brings a lot of joy, but can also bring challenges. one in 5 mothers will experience the common mood disorder.. postpartum depression. kcrg-tv nine's brea love joins us live from unity point health luke's want to let more people know about this disorder? chris and nicole, it's something some mothers may try to ignore, but the only way to feel better is to seek treatment. postpartum depression can progress and sometimes even lead to suicide. with september being suicide awareness month, st. luke's wants to bring this type to attention. postpartum depression is a

mother, but the baby and family members too. symptoms can begin after giving birth or anytime in the first year. they can be mild, moderate, or severe. there's plenty of symptoms, but the most prominent are: irritable, tired, and guilty. having trouble sleeping, feeling unable or unwilling to care for your baby, and crying spells for no reason. officials say mood disorders are 100 percent could last weeks, months, and sometimes even years. 54:34 "the three options mothers have for treatment is increased support, so pratcial and emotional, they can offer therapy so they can refer them on to speak with a therapist and then they offer medication." there are resources availible throughout eastern iowa for mothers facing postpartum depression. you can call the foundation ii crisis hotline.

suicide prevention hotline at 1- 800-273-talk st. luke's also offers a postpartum support group, there's one meeting tonight and every wednesday at the st. luke's birth center. for fathers and families, the best thing you can do is be supportive, pay attention to the signs, and get your loved one help. for a full list of all of this information i've placed a link on kcrg dot com. live in cedar rapids, brea love, kcrg-tv nine news. university of iowa doctors are excited about a new treatment of muscular dystrophy. just yesterday the f-d-a approved the drug eteplirsen . the drug provides therapy to kids with duchenne muscular dystrophy, and may help increase protein in the muscles. kids with muscular distrophy often need wheelchairs at young ages and may only live into their 20's and 30's. the drug has been on trial at the university of iowa for months. one family says it can tell it's already helping their 5-year old son. "it's probably more stabilization that we're seeing with him, which is fantastic, so it's not as steep

the f-d-a has been heavily criticized for approving the new drug before doing more extensive clinical trials. some critics say they fear the drug could give families false hope. in a tv-9 follow-up this morning.. the dubuque man who shot and killed his daughter is sentenced to spend the rest of his life in prison. the jury took only a few hours to find robert stern guilty of 1st-degree murder. both the prosecution and defense rested monday. the 63 year old's to the stand. they alleged the prosecution didn't prove stern killed his daughter, beyond a reasonable doubt. stern shot his 27-year-old daughter, kimberly, 17 times in their dubuque home last year. kimberly had autism. several people who spent time with stern and his daughter testified monday to how he treated her. "he was always on top of her. i never saw him as an encouraging parent. " friends and family described

say mentally, she was much like a small child rather than a young woman. a judge has re-sentenced a man-- who was convicted as a teenager-- for killing his grandparents in manchester. isaiah sweet will serve life in prison with a chance for parole. he was serving that sentence without parole. sweet appealed to the iowa supreme court. earlier this year, it banned life without parole sentences for juveniles convicted of first-degree murder. sweet shot and killed his grandparents in 20-12, when he was 17. an organization that helps feed pets feared the loss of a barn would close its doors. quick-thinking and a generous offer is now allowing ani-meals to continue

told you ani- meals was in danger of shutting down. the owners of its current storage location, an old barn, are demolishing that building. the nonprofit couldn't afford much else. group officials put out a call for help and a local landlord, steve emerson, stepped up. he's donating a space that will keep ani-meals going. and a story of two iowa state troopers who used a detailed description and quick eyes to help last weekend at a hawkeye game. a call went out over trooper frank burns and troope at the game. because there was such a great description of him, the troopers were able to find the boy in a black number 6 jersey within a minute. burns went into the stands and calmed down the boy while reicks found his parents. burns says it was satisfying to be able to re-unite a boy with his parents. a new study is questioning the benefit of fitness trackers and whether they actually improve your chance of losing weight. that's in today's tech

information this morning in the terror bombings that rocked new york and new jersey. a-b-c's maggie rulli reports federal authorities have charged the bombing suspect on 4 counts, including use of weapons of mass destruction. we now know that federal officials had been warned about suspected bomber ahmad rahami years ago... and the 28 year old had been planning months. in this chilling new video - we see what authorities believe is rahami about to plant bombs in his suitcase and backpack... that pressure cooker bomb he allegedly set off in new york... poweful enough to shatter windows about 400 feet away... and propel a nearby dumpster 120 feet... injuring 31 people.the criminal
