kendis, things are much calmer now. hundreds of protesters, though, still defying the order to maintain that city-wide curfew, and they are continuing to march through the streets of suptown charlotte. they've been here for hours, at times, laying down in the streets whil streets. while demonstrations have remained peaceful, there have been tense moments. at one point, protesters blocked the interstate outside of uptown, and police deployed tear gas to get the crowd to disperse of the who officers sprayed by a chemical agent by civilians and treated by emergency morningers. so far, no reports of any injuries to civilians. as you mentioned, more than 400 national guard troops are here on the ground assisting the police tonight, antecity's mayor saying the nightly curfew will remain in effect until the state of emergency is lefted. meantime, the family of scott

the police shooting, and there continues to be two sides of the story. the police saying the suspect did have some kind of weapon, a gun, but the family says he was carrying a book, and this morning, they are not commenting on what they saw in that video. kendis, diane? >> so different tales, completely, but where does the investigation do from here? >> reporter: well, right now, we know that the fbi and the department of justice are here on the ground. they will be assisting with that investigation, and, you wanted to let you know, one of the reasons why protesters believe that tonight's protests were so calm is because there are leaders here. earlier tonight, the naacp held a gathering outside the hotel where the protester last night was shot and killed, and then just down the road, we had people gather at a church for a prayer vigil to pray for peace so we should be learning in the next several hours what's planned for the today, and what

in front of government buildings and it seemed to have an effect in toning down violation. one protesters who was shot, apparently by another protester wednesday night died of his injury. justin carr 26 years old. they imposed a curfew. they will study effectiveness of the action to decide whether it should be extended into the weekend. family members have seen dash cam video of the shooting. the police chief says it shows the 43-year-old was holding a gun at the time, and that officer was justified in pulling the trigger. vincent, who like scott, is black, is on leave during the investigation. the family says the video is still inconclusive and insists scott had a book in his hand when shot to death. >> thanks to jim ryan there. abc in charlotte. now to tulsa where arrangements are made for police officer surrender after being charged in

this morning on "world news now," hundreds of protesters took to the streets in north carolina despite an overnight curfew. >> still, the scene there is relatively peaceful despite the video of the deadly police shooting of keith scott. scott's family has now seen that caught on tape. we're live in charlotte with the latest. and the candidates are taking the day off to prepare for the big first presidential debate. meanwhile, donald trump is clarifying his stance on the continue vishlg stop and frisk tactic. we'll tell you what he meant to say. and severe weather bringinging heavy winds and rain and knocking out power ask damaging homes as it tore across the region.

that city-wide curfew is now in effect, but hundreds of protesters continue to ignore the order as they march in the streets of uptown charlotte. >> no justice -- >> no peace. >> reporter: for a third straight night, protesters took to the streets of charlotte, a heavy police presence backed up by more than 400 national guard troops didn't detemperature crowds from demonstrating agai sheeting of keith lamont scott, a 43-year-old black man. scott was shot by a black officer, brantley. some witnesses say scott had no gun. others say he held a book. thursday, authorities allowed scott's family their first look at videos of the incident. in a statement, their lawyer said after watching the videos,

scott's hands were by his side and he was slowly walking backwards. police say they will not make the videos public until the investigation is over. >> this family does not agree with rioting or incident individuals being injured or killed. on wednesday, demonstrations and with bedlam as angry crowds clashed with police. tear gas and flash grenades were not enough to keep some masking their faces, from smashing windows and blocking roads. this man was shot, police say not by them. he later died. and at one point, protesters blocked part of the interstate just outside of uptown. police had to deploy tear gas to disperse the crowds. the city's mayor says thor curfew will remain in effect until the state of emergency is lifted the.

that was the scene of a lot of violence last night. things are a lot more calm this night. any issues so far? >> well, charlotte meclanburg police say two of their officers were sprayed with some kind of chemical agent by civilians. they were treated by emergency worke workers. we have not heard reports of any civilians being injured. police continue to monitor the situation from about 1200 cameras placed throughout the city. >> heather, what do we know about where things progress from the investigation here? >> protesters are still very angry. they say they will continue to demonstrate. they're still calling or the release of that police video footage. the police chief saying he will not be releasing that video. we know the fbi and the department of justice are here on the ground investigating and tonight the family still calling for calm. kendis, diane. >> heather live in charlotte, thank you.

a police officer turning herself in in the shooting death of an unarmed black man. prosecutors say officer betty shelby acted unreasonably when she shot terence crutcher last friday. police video shows crutcher with his hands up during most of the encounter. the district attorney praising the police department's reaction. >> it is the shared the ability to control their reactions to do just that. >> crutcher's funeral is scheduled for tomorrow night. in the meantime, shelby posted bond after turning herself in. she faced four years to life in prison if convicted. a judge is actually going to decide if the case goes to trial. police in western maryland say officer rs there were justified in perpendicular spraying a 15-year-old girl.

that handcuffed teen into their cruiser. she's sprayed after refuse to go put her feet inside. she was cuffed after kicking and cursing at the officers. the girl allegedly had ridden her back through a red light and hit a car. hillary clinton reached out to the mayor of charlotte to discuss the unrest and not to be undone, trump tweeted last night that he spoke with north carolina's governor and trump is also clarifying his position on and frisk. tom llamas is on the campaign trail. >> reporter: with the issue of race red hot, donald trump keeping praise on police but also offered this. >> we must do everything we can to ensure that they are properly trained, that they respect all members of the public, and that any wrongdoing is always and it will be by them, vigorously addressed.
