good evening. we begin with the new cell phone video showing the fatal encounter between keith scott and police in charlotte, north carolina. the video was recorded by scott's wife and we'll warn you

>> reporter: the pressure on charlotte police is growing tonight with calls for them to throw more light on a police shooting that's cast a shadow over the city. people are once again filling the streets, responding to this disturbing cell phone video. >> don't you do it! >> reporter: recorded by the wife of 43-year-old keith lamont scott, shared by her attorneys. the recording does more to explain how scott was killed than so far but it also raises so many more questions. tuesday afternoon police are here to serve a warrant. as they arrive police say they see keith scott sitting in a car with a gun and they react. >> don't shoot him! >> reporter: you can hear the panic in her voice when the video begins, lakeyia scott is already well away from the group of cast where police have their guns drawn and are shouting at her husband. you can hear her beg not to shoot. >> don't shoot him, he has 92 weapon. >> reporter: in the video you

point, no way to see if he has a gun. police keep shouting he has a weapon, telling him to put it down. >> don't shoot him, he didn't do anything. >> drop the gun! >> he doesn't have a gun, he has a tbi, he's not going to do anything to you guys, he just took his medicine. >> reporter: you hear her telling him he has a traumatic brain injury. now she starts speaking directly to her husband. >> don't let them break the windows, come on out of the car. >> drop the gun! >> keith, don't do it. >> reporter: it's not clear in the video what she's now telling her husband not to again, you can't see him and the officers are still telling him to drop a weapon. >> keith! keith! keith, don't you do it! >> reporter: her cell phone keeps rolling during the tragic moment as she watches the gunfire bring her husband down. >> did you shoot him? he better not be [ bleep ] dead. he better not be [ bleep ] dead, i know that [ bleep ] much. >> reporter: now for the fires are time we can see scott clearly. he's on the ground and officers

>> yes, we're over here at 9453 lexington court. these are the police officers that shot my husband. and he better live. he better live. because he didn't do nothing to them. that's okay, did you all call the police? did you all call the ambulance? >> reporter: scott could not be saved. he was taken to the carolinas medical center where he was pronounced dead. other witnesses outside the apartment complex where he was killed were saying he was no threat to police at >> he's standing like this telling them, i don't have anything. you hear four shots. boom, boom, boom, boom. that man hit the ground. then they just standing there looking at him. >> reporter: according to his family the father of seven was sitting in his car reading a book while he was waiting for one of his children to get off the bus from school. one of his daughters posted live video from the scene online saying there's an awful reason police killed her father. >> the police just shot my daddy four times for being black. >> reporter: this time the charlotte police officer who

well. for that matter, so is the city's police chief and many of its officers. police say officer brett lee vinson was forced to shoot because police say scott had a gun and looked like he was going to use it. >> one of the officers felt a lethal threat and fired his weapon because of it. >> reporter: police say this is a picture of the gun. the many not buying it say the photo isn't clear. >> when you look at the picture they released it's hard to tell what it is. it could be a gun butt's not clear. >> reporter: scott's family says gun. police say they recovered one but haven't shared many other details. there is however police body camera and dash cam videos from the shooting, according to police, which could possibly answer some of the many questions. but despite calls far and wide to release them, police have so far refused. the attorneys for scott's family have released this statement. the family is still hopeful that the charlotte mecklenburg police department and the city of charlotte will release all available video of the incident to the public so at people can

keith's death. even democratic presidential nominee hillary clinton has weighed in on twitter saying, charlotte should release police video of the keith lamont scott shooting without delay. we must ensure justice and work to bridge divides. but authorities say they don't plan on sharing their videos until the investigation is over. >> transparency is a big issue, obviously, in police shootings. because they've now created so much anger and resentment around the country. so i'm sure what's goinghr this particular police chief's mind is, what can i tell the public but to keep the integrity of the investigating together? >> reporter: the public and the streets, desperate for answers, are left to decipher this. >> drop the gun! >> he doesn't have a gun, he has a tbi, he's not going to do anything to you guys, he just took his medicine. >> that should have been a trigger for the police to say, look, we're dealing with somebody that may have some mental challenges here. this also might have been a good

over to talk to her. obviously she knows all about this guy. >> reporter: then there's this moment in question. >> keith, don't do it. keith, get out of the car. keith, keith, don't you do it. don't you do it. keith! >> we don't know what she's talking about. but it sounds like to me keith now has stepped out of the pickup truck and has something in his hand. the presumption being a gun. >> reporter: after the shooting on tuesday, hundreds took to the they set fires and smashed police cars. the night air filled with smoke and tear gas. from the sky you could see the battle between police and the crowds. images that have grown all too familiar in a nation used to reacting to deadly police encounters. wednesday night those protests took a deadly turn. >> shots fired, shots fired! >> police say someone in the crowd started shooting. then a young man who came to march was seriously wounded. justin carr later died in the

didn't fire any live rounds. on thursday, officers themselves were injured. >> overall, we had one officer who was treated for a minor hand injury. two who were treated after being sprayed with some chemical agent by some protesters. one national guard member was treated by medical for a minor injury. >> reporter: what's happening in north carolina is just the latest flash point in a violent summer of controversial police shootings. >> do the shoot! >> reporter: where the victims >> he's got his hands up for her now. >> reporter: last friday in tulsa, oklahoma, 40-year-old 10 rence crutcher, walking toward his car with his hands up, was shot by a police officer. officer betty shelby told homicide detectives, i was never so scared in my life as in that moment right then. yesterday that officer was charged with man slaughter in the first degree. she turned herself in, released on a $50,000 bond. she has not entered a plea yet. in july the shootings of alton

philando castille, once again a video from a cell phone recorded their deaths for all to say. so far this year, 708 people have been shot and killed by police. more than 40 officers have been killed on the job in gunfire this year. and the world will never forget the five brave police officers killed by a cowardly sniper during this protest in dallas this summer. tonight a curfew remains in place in charlotte as the city braces for more fallout. the governor of has declared a state of emergency and called in the national guard. >> i'm not going to come to you, i'm going to record you! >> i think there are a number of circumstances where police are being less aggressive or even proactive because the concern of being videotaped and then that videotape being used against them. >> reporter: cameras may be in every pocket and are certainly bringing many of these shootings to light. but they haven't ended them or encouraged more trust. for "nightline," i'm steve

it's the beginning of rush season on college campuses across america. young people are deciding if and with whom they want to go greek. the vetting process can have unintended and even deadly cons consequences. a new movie paints a graphic picture of an aspect of campus life notorious for spinning out of control, fraternity hazing.

chang sits down with the star, nick jonas. >> hello? >> get your ugly ass to the house in 11 minutes or your dead. >> reporter: they call it hell week for a reason. >> welcome to hell week, goat sclams. >> sir, yes, sir! >> reporter: a secret ritual first tee picketed on camera. >> who was the president? >> george washington, sir! >> wrong, drink! >> reporter: pledging a fraternity a rite of passage. the n nick jonas chronicles the psychological and physical toll hazing can take on some young pledges. >> what do you think the movie says about masculinity? >> this film in particular shows the dark side of when you leave 20, 20-something, young men with no real consequences for their actions. >> reporter: jonas standard as brett land, a popular member of a fraternity who encourages brother brad to pledge.

the weak ones. >> reporter: there can be benefits to the fraternity of brotherhood. i think when it becomes a pack mentality and when there aren't consequences the lines can start to get blurred. >> ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the night's main event! >> reporter: in hollywood, greek life is usually comic. think "old school." >> are you sure you're okay with this? >> just ring the [ bleep ] bell, you pansy. >> reporter: "an ? >> reporter: "neighbors." >> oh, yeah, magic mushrooms! >> this is the first film that is set against the backdrop of a fraternity that i can think of that's not a comedy. >> reporter: there are over 6,000 fraternities on campuses around the country. >> a brotherhood you'll be proud to be part of. >> reporter: recruitment videos posted online glamorize the cool kids party atmosphere. the life-long friendships.

which i love, which is one of the guys says, i'm having sex for the first time, i'm going to parties for the first time. your desires drive your ability to sort of put the craziness aside, craziness being some of the hazing. >> reporter: but pledging a fraternity can have harsh and sometimes dangerous consequences. at least one person has died from hazing every year since 1969. among them, 19-yr-old chun michael dang. of the pi delta psi frat from barouk college forced dang and other pledges to run across a frozen field, weighed down with 30-pound backpacks, all being assaulted. >> he was singled out and treated harsher than the other pledges. >> reporter: dang lost consciousness and police say it took the students almost two hours before driving him to a hospital. he later died. >> a lot of individuals refuse to cooperate.

they try to hide evidence. >> reporter: now five members of the frat are on trial for third-degree murder. they pled not guilty. and their lawyers say it was a tragedy, not murder. the case is ongoing. hazing has always been a part of greek life. andrew lowes was in sigma alpha epsilon at dartmouth. >> pledges had to go through initiation rituals ranging from constant binge drinking, chugging vinegar to vomit, competitive eating challenges. >> reporter: he admits he perpetuated. >> seeing that on the other side as a brother was traumatizing. just really weird. so it was not long after that that i left. >> reporter: dartmouth says hazing is strictly prohibited and charged his fraternity with violating that policy. sigma alpha epsilon says they weren't able to validate his account but have since removed the pledging process altogether. >> it is about manipulation,

it is not about bonds of brotherhood. >> reporter: roslyn weissman is an expert on young adults and the author of "master minds and wingmen." >> unfortunately what happens in practice tearties is that young men are bonding through the most superficial ways of being a man. by drinking as much as you can. by partying as hard as you can. by going after as many women as super fflly as you can. >> reporter: the movie is based on the memoir "goat" by brad lands. >> i think what lies at the part of it is relationship between two brothers. >> reporter: brad fledged his younger brother brett's fraternity at clemson. >> watching some of these scenes, the duct tape, the cage scene, i'm thinking, this can't be true. >> i think it's tame. it can be a bit tame, actually. >> you think it's worse in real life? >> yes. it was worse. >> reporter: brad says the hazing broke his spirit. eventually both brothers dropped out of the fraternity, choosing true brotherhood, they say, over the greek version of it.

these groups is so immense in total when y're on a college campus. if you weren't in a fraternity as a guy you couldn't do anything, there was no social life, there was no other outlet. >> reporter: clemson university had no comment and kappa sigma didn't respond to our inquiry. nick jonas spent his youth in showbiz as a member of the boy band the jonas brothers. ? ? this is an sos ? >> reporter: goat is part big screen. >> you went to a dark place. >> yeah. and it wasn't hard. >> punch me in the face. >> i didn't have a traditional college experience, or i wasn't in a fraternity, you know. it was scary how easy it came. to go there. >> reporter: in addition to his two former band mates, jonas has a younger brother who just started college. >> it's a very serious conversation. i said, i know you know i made this movie and i really think it's important that you watch it.
