[ cheers and applause ] you know, this thing kind of knocked me out, this adults take mental health days off once in a while, and a blogger on parenting site scary that kids need them too. they say that the pressures of school can hit them so hard once in a while this they need to let off steam. would you allow your kid to say to you, i can't take it today? >> 100%. >> yeah. let them stay home and curse all day. let off the steam. >> i think if we're going to be open and honest about mental health and the fact that we don't recognize it and there's still a sigma involved, we need to start young because it starts young. and i think recognizing that

depression, anxiety, just feeling overwhelmed socially, to remind them that it's just as important to stay home for their mind and their heart as it is a cold or a sore throat. >> right, right. >> i grew up wanting to have perfect attendance and my mom was a teacher and i had to be on my death bed to take a day off from school. it was like, get up and go to school, get up and go to school. >> are you like that with your kids? >> i was and recently my son called me from the school and he was h other kids. he called and he's like, i need you to come pick me up. i was like, why, are you sick? did you fall? he was like, i'm having trouble and i just need you to pick me up. i was like, no, i'm not picking you up. and then i heard his voice and i said mom will be right there, and i picked him up and he just needed it. he just needed it and i let him stay home the next day, too. >> how long would you let that go on? >> as long as he needed it. like that was where i came down.

in a hole." why did you decide to put this out? >> the truth is i had no intention of making an album. but i had written a bunch of songs that i was really proud of and that i liked. i took them to a friend of mine, jude cole who's been one of my best friends and a musician. i wanted to see if i could send them to bmi or sony and get one of their artists to record them. and he convinced me, because he sounded and the way we recorded them, he convinced me to go forward with that. and the truth is i owe him a great deal because it ended up being one of the great creative experiences of my life. here to perform "calling out your name" from "down in a hole," give it up for kiefer sutherland.
