to a hail mary. why this is one weekend college football fans will never forget. and good evening. i'm tom llamas, and we begin with the race for the white house and a major development involving donald trump's taxes. the "new york times" obtaining information had a loss of more than $900 million? 1 in 1995. as trump's supporters defend what they say is the candidate's genius, the second presidential debate is one week from tonight. mary bruce gets us started. >> reporter: tonight, an october surprise for donald trump.

that i can tell you. >> reporter: tonight, we're learning donald trump could have paid no interest taxes for years. records sent by an anonymous tipster to the "new york times" show in 1995, trump reported a jaw-dropping $916 million loss, the result of the collapse of his atlantic city casinos, his airline and the purchase of new york's plaza hotel. a loss so large, he could have legally avoided paying federal income taxes for up to 18 years, a strategy he seemed to brag about at last week's debate. >> maybe he doesn't want the american people, all of you watching tonight, that know that he's paid nothing in federal taxes. >> that makes me smart. >> reporter: tonight, trump's campaign isn't denying the report. trump tweeting, i know the tax laws better than anyone that has run for president, and how to fix them. his surrogates, today, launched a vigorous defense.

i mean, the reality is. >> a genius? >> absolute genius. >> there's no one who has shown more genius in their way to maneuver around the tax code and rightfully use the laws to do that. >> reporter: but trump hasn't always described it that way. >> i know people that are making a tremendous amount of money and paying virtually no tax, and i think it's unfair. >> reporter: voters in florida also seeing it both ways. >> i'm a working class citizen, and i pay my taxes. i don't understand how he's not paying his. >> i t it that way. >> reporter: clinton's campaign is pouncing on the new report, saying it reveals the colossal nature of his past business failures. "now that the gig is up, why doesn't he release his returns to show us all how smart he really is?" bottom line, experts say trump didn't do anything illegal. but the magnitude of the nearly $1 billion loss is amazing.

island of st. vincent as it slowly marches north. gaining strength. right now, a category 4, this could be the strongest hurricane to hit haiti in decades, a country still rebuilding after the devastating earthquake in 2010, and tropical storm isaac in 2012. from here in jamaica, all the way to the bahamas, the state department is urging all saying there's limited time for a safe departure. >> thank you. let's bring in rob marciano. >> it's been since the 1960s since a storm like this hit in haiti, and thousands died. here's a computer model showing landfall in western haiti, sometime tomorrow night.

>> reporter: thomas gallagher says he has no memory of the accident. only waking up on the floor of can cab. and this event recorder recovered from the back of the train wasn't working. >> we want to get in and get the exact speed of the train. >> reporter: new jersey transit had been under investigation by the federal railroad administration f violations, some related to employee drug and alcohol use, and almost $5 million in damage to tracks and equipment. the train is required by law to have a working front event recorder so investigators are hopeful that front car will hold some much needed answers when they are able to get in there. tom? >> thank you. next to the potential cyber threat that may cast a shadow

november? here's pierre thomas. >> reporter: homeland security secretary jeh johnson acknowledging tonight that election officials in 21 states have requested help in blocking cyber-attacks. sources tell abc news that investigators believe the hacking tied to the highest levels of the russian government. >> we're doing an awful lot of work to understand just what mischief is russia up to in connection with our election. >> reporter: concerns mounting after abc news first reported this week that hackers believed to be tied to russia had targeted the voter registration computers of at least 20 states. >> if we retaliate against russia with a cyber-attack of some sort, we could get into a spiral that would be a cyber-war. >> reporter: abc news has learned that in four cases, hackers actually got inside those voter registration databases and likely copied information about thousands of voters. >> potentially, the presidential

divorce that was ongoing. >> reporter: his relatives have not been charged and deny any connection. >> even my family who thought i'd been mistreated would never do something like this. never. >> reporter: but police allege that katherine magbanua, arrested saturday, is the link between the adelson family and the alleged hitmen. investigators claiming in this affidavit that she had past romantic relationships with one of the accused hitmen, as well the family telling abc news magbanua was an employee. police also claim the accused hitmen's first call after the murder was to magbanua, her attorney telling us she has no prior convictions, and their priority is getting her out on bond. while tonight, police aren't saying whether there could still be more arrests. marci gonzalez, abc news, new
