we begin with new details in what authorities call a brazen and by all accounts terrifying armed robbery of kim kardashian. perpetrators making off with $10 million in her jewels. how did they gain access to her rented luxury apartment? did her social media posts may a part? here's abc's alec marquardt. >> reporter: tonight, kim kardashian west safely new york, reunited with husband kanye west in this video from tmz after surviving a harrowing ordeal last night in paris. >> kim kardashian found -- >> gagged -- >> held at gunpoint and begging for her life -- >> reporter: authorities tell abc news the mother of two was held at gunpoint, tied up, gagged, and locked in the bathroom by armed men. they stole more than $10 million worth of jewelry, including this nearly $5 million ring that kim showed off on instagram just

back in new york, kanye stopping his show abruptly leaving fans to speculate. kim's bodyguard is seen frequently in pictures with her. but was reportedly not there last night to protect her. >> that bodyguard had been sent elsewhere for the evening because kim was done for the night. and the belief was that she was secure in the location where she was. >> reporter: since the robbery, kim has gone dark on social media. her representative telling us that kim is "badly shaken but it was supposed to be a week full of glamor and flashing bulbs. the kardashians front and center at this year's paris fashion week. attending the off-white women's wear show last thursday. and just one day before the terrifying ordeal, kendall jenner walking the runway. kim, kourtney, and kris in attendance. last night kim was alone in the exclusive luxury apartment she was renting. this snapchat reportedly taken an hour or so before the

kendall, posting this image two miles away at the paris nightclub lark. five people dressed as police officers managed to make their way into the hotel. sources tell us two made their way up to kardashian's apartment and carried out the robbery. it was 2:30 a.m. when the masked men reportedly entered kardashian's room and reportedly tied her up, gagged and locked her in the bathroom. as the robbers in addition with more than $10 million worth of posted about on instagram days earlier. she managed to escape, reportedly frantically trying to reach her husband. an ocean away, kanye abruptly ended his show. >> i'm sorry, there's a family emergency, i have to stop the show. >> reporter: leaving the fans stunned. kardashian's children, north and saint, thankfully far away from the ordeal, home safe in new york. back in paris, police and medics

back to new york this morning. her sister kendall spotted leaving with police protection. those familiar with the luxury rental were surprised. >> given the clientele that comes here, as expensive and exclusive as it is, what's the security like? >> the security is done by the confidential, discreet place no name on the door. they felt that the security is enough because it's very discreet. exclusive hotel industry in paris. he says it's at this hotel where the rich and famous can often find discretion, but believes it was kardashian's social media presence that might have made her a target. >> yesterday, made so many tweets, so many -- >> people knew where she was? >> yes, everything she's wearing, everywhere she's going. so you know where she was. and the kind of jewels she's got. so at the end of the day, she created the situation too.

that has dominated the presidential campaign for two straight days. the "new york times" report that trump may have declared a loss of nearly $1 billion, and may not have paid federal income taxes for 18 years. far from cowering tonight, trump is crowing, calling himself brilliant. here's abc's david wright. >> i understand the tax laws better than almost anyone. which is why i am the one who can fix them. >> reporter: trump's taxes were already officially a thing. even before an anonymous whistleblower mailed the "new york times" a copy of part of his 1995 state returns. now this is no longer just an abstract debate. >> i will release my tax returns, against my lawyers' wishes, when she releases her 33,000 e-mails that have been deleted. >> reporter: every presidential candidate since 1972 has presumably felt the voters are entitled to know -- except one.

right to be -- >> completely in the right to be taking this loss. extremely large amount of money to lose, but in the course of business, nothing was done wrong here. >> reporter: legally trump appears on solid ground. politically? >> most of us pay our taxes. the idea that you can make billions of dollars and not have it taxed is surprising to most people. >> reporter: today in ohio, hillary clinton not only mocked trump's business acumen, she also accused him of not paying his fair where people work hard, look after one another, and yes, pay their taxes. right? >> reporter: it's worth noting that just last year, clinton herself wrote off nearly $700,000 of her own income, using the exact same method. today trump pushed back, insisting it was the clinton-era recession, not his own poor business decisions that led to the loss and he was smart enough to dig himself out. >> i'm a fighter.

and without anything funding the government, it's hard for it to work. >> reporter: consider that the $916 million trump was able to shelter in 1995 would be worth about $1.4 billion in today's dollars, that's a lot money, enough to fund three years' worth of capital investments in america's transportation infrastructure. >> our infrastructure is a disaster. >> reporter: enough to pay the total budget for customs and border protection nearly twice over. >> we will build a pay for a whole year's worth of health care premiums for every enlisted soldier in the u.s. army. >> we're going to take care of our vets. >> reporter: tonight, some veterans are outraged. >> taxes pay for my body armor, they pay for my weapons, ammunition. they pay for the emergency life flight that flew my buddies out of afghanistan when te lost their legs. >> reporter: it may well be a crime for the anonymous whistleblower to have shared trump's tax return without his consent.
