debate, republican governor mike pence and democratic senator tim kaine battled, including donald trump's tax records and hillary clinton's email scandal. we'll recap the debate later in the newscast. the vice presidential debates often struggle to attract the attention of viewers -- that could be especially true in 2016 with so much attention for trump and clinton. but as kcrg-tv9's jordee kalk and tim kaine have a different goal -- to shore up any perceived weaknesses with the presidential candidates who picked them. jordee: most political experts agree this november's election is unique. one university of iowa political science professor says this year is particularly different because the vp candidates are actually more favored than the presidential candidates professor tim hagle says many americans don't trust hillary clinton. hagle says many other

their severe environmental allergies have ripped izzy and hazel parsons from their cedar rapids home. because of that the parsons family had to uproot their life to keep the girls safe, but that comes at a cost. meet izzy and hazel. these girls love to play with their sister in their backyard garden. but right now... this is the only safe place for them. the problems s a year ago. the girls dealt with daily headaches, stomach aches, and bad reactions. after many doctors visits, their allergies were brought to attention. 18:27 "it shocked the allergist how allergic they are to environmental so all the trees, all the molds, all the grasses." knowing severity, the parsons wanted to make sure a leak in their washer wouldn't cause mold. that's when they found the big problem. it turns out mold wasn't only in one part of their home, there were serious problems throughout. 19:19 "in parts of the house the mold levels are 27 times the amount

right here at thomas park. there's a silent auction with donations from the community all in effort to keep the girls and this family comfortable. live in marion, brea love, kcrg-tv nine news. iowans are being asked to get out and move with a short walk today. it's to support the healthiest state initiative, which hopes to turn iowa into the fittest state it city square park in marion at noon. a group walk was scheduled in cedar rapids, but cancelled because of flooding -- still you're free to walk anywhere. while body cameras for police such a vocal issue in 2016, some officers in des moines are working to try and raise money for them. they are doing it through a program called the guardian project. the project raises money in the private sector to buy body cameras for each des moines police officer. des moines police say there is

cameras, but there is no funding plan for the next 5 or 6 years in the city budget. that's why they say they're thankful for this help. "thank you to everyone in this room for not only standing behind your police department, but for taking it to a whole other level and standing alongside your police department...in a very important time in our nation we are going to show that des moines is different" " the cost for 300 body cameras and their storage million dollars. right now, the project raised close to $600,000. every police officer in cedar falls will also soon use a body camera while on duty. last month, the department raised the $30,000 dollars to pay for the cameras. the story of an iowa little league baseball team became a national inspiration over the summer. a player's mother was battling

cancer. the johnston mother still made the trip to williamsport, pennsyvlania to watch her son j-t and his teammates in the little league world series this summer. it was there that... the amazing happened. while being interviewed live on e-s-p-n, her son smashed a home run out of the park. a moment that touched youth baseball parents in iowa... and people everywhere. the red cross is taking nominations for heroes who'll receive recognition at the annual hy-vee heroes game between iowa and nebraska. judges will choose 1 hero from each state, and they will be honored at the game next month. you can nominate someone on the red cross's website from now until october 24th. a clown who runs a costume store in cedar rapids says recent clown sightings in eastern iowa aren't anything to joke about. some people have reported being spooked after seeing suspicious clowns near parks, schools, and other public areas. police in cedar rapids and waterloo have taken multiple reports of clown sightings over the past few days. university

such sightings. in all these cases, the clowns have not been a credible threat. now police are stressing that dressing up as a clown is not illegal. but they say threatening someone could lead to arrest. they also warn that people dressing up as clowns could be putting their own safety at risk because of the panic the phenomenon has created. sparkles the clown says he's seen a increasing number of people buying clown costumes at his cedar rapids store. he says he's angry that some people are using clown costumes to frighten people. he says that approah clowning. "09:52:51;29 i am definitely worried about it, i mean there are people that are on edge about clowns as a whole right now, where the true clowns aren't gonna harm anybody or affect anybody in those ways. i mean, how do you know? " he expects the popularity of the costume to grow in the coming weeks, as halloween approaches. creepy clown sightings are being reported all over the nation. according to police in

clown threats. some students at wichita east high had clown sightings and saw threats on social media. between 50 and 100 people reported the threats to police. police did arrest a 14- year-old boy from wichita on monday for the threats. "false stories on clown sightings, and individuals dressing up like clowns to cause fear and unrest within our community can be a serious felony crime " a few other states responding to clown sightings include maryland, californi virginia. owners of a hotel, just a block from the cedar river in cedar rapids, constantly have to watch for high water... now the cooper's mill is looking to sell to the city. but right now, here's a look at

the west bank of the cedar river in cedar rapids will not reopen after last week's flood scare. but it's not due to any damages. the owners of the best western cooper's mill have decided to accept a city buyout offer, selling their business for $5.2 million dollars. the land will eventually become part of a west-side flood protection levee, but one city council member says the recent scare apparently moved up plans to close cooper's mill. "i certainly agree, i think it's the right thing to do for the whole of the city " the city says cooper's mill's owners had planned to close the business later this winter but apparently speeded up plans after the flood evacuation last week. the council will vote on the deal on october 11th. demolition could take place next spring. this morning yahoo faces privacy questions after a new report claims the company scanned all incoming emails for the n-s-a. that's in today's tech bytes.
