after a rough 48 hours, unlike anything seen before, what do pundits say, did he stop the bleeding? >> reporter: he did. that's what donald trump's goal was last night. it was an incredible weekend. you had many republicans saying he should drop out of the race, and many elected fig officials gave him support withdrew, incoming john mccain who stood by trump in a very attacks. donald trump comes out last night, and he was not a disaster for those republicans, and in that sense, it's a win for him because tomorrow morning, this week, next couple days, you're not going to see this steady line, steady drum beat of republicans hammering donald trump like you saw over the weekend. >> and, karen, something unorthodox, before the debate started, donald trump held his own press conference with

you think of him bringing up that and having the women there, and was hillary's response, they go low, we go high, was that enough? >> reporter: yeah, diane, i don't think he gained anything out of it. like we said, donald trump had indicated for days that he was going to go after bill clinton so this was not a surprise to the clinton campaign. she was prepared. she knew how to answer the questions last night, but that facebook live appearance was a surprise, popping up out of clinton of sexual misconduct, but what were they hoping to get out of it? they certainly got a burst of activity on the cable networks before the debate, but once the debate started, it was ultimately about donald trump's answer to that audio recording from 2005, and then his own attacks against bill clinton. now, as for hillary clinton's answer, i think it was successful. she didn't answer the question at all. she clearly didn't want to go there. you know, if you're going to

and all those nice pleasantries ending last night will be completely forgotten. >> in 48 hours, there's been buzz online about mike pence possibly dropping off the trump ticket. what's the latest on that front? >> reporter: well, mike pence seemed to put the nail in the coffin on that. last night, he spoke to donald trump after the debate. we were told it was a very positive conversation, and pence congratulated trump on too, so publicly tweeted that donald trump had a big win last night, and that he is looking forward to working with him to make america great again, so, a very public sign of support from mike pence, certainly, going to put to rest some of the talk, but that was really something over the last couple of days, the idea that as more republicans were jumping ship, that his running mate would be one of them. >> so questionable whether he'll attend events scheduled for later today. we'll see. >> and, karen, in addition to

the 19th in one of the crucial swing states of nevada. joins live for that and stay with us throughout the show for more on the debate, and more on "america this morning," and "gma." we move on to the aftermath of hurricane matthew. the main concern this morning is dangerous flooding, particularly in parts of north carolina. the area around fayetteville, north carolina, received more than three months of rain in just a matter of 14 hours over the weekend. look at those scenes. rescuers pulled more than a thousand people from the fast moving water. at least 20 people and several remain missing. the cost of the storm won't be known for some time but expected to be the nation's costliest storm since sandy four years ago. and the hurricane devastated haiti. the first shrimps of united nations food aid are arriving in hard hit areas. reports now indicate at least 900 people killed in the storm that whipped haiti with 145 miles per hour winds.

spread of illness across areas where the devastation is nearly complete. now to california where we're learning some new details about the man suspected of killing two palm springs police officers. 26-year-old john felix expected to be charged with first degree murder this week. authorities say it started saturday when felix's mother called police to say her son was causing a disturbance. shortly after four officers the fallen officers identified as veteran officer jose, and officer lestly, department for 18 months. federal authorities are trying to figure out how two trains side swiped each other on the new york railroad this weekend. 33 people were hurt when a train doing maintenance caused a commuter train to derail. it came ten days after a train in jersey crashed into a terminal, killing one and injuring more than 100. more than a dozen people
