picking them up on the northwest side near ellis park and make their way south. and they'll only make one pass. people should put sandbags in the public curb, on the street on lightly-traveled streets, or on any portion of a driveway. the city says it will take about 3 weeks to pickup the sandbags at a cost of nearly half a million dollars. cedar rapids has taken a first step in building permanent flood protection. the city broke ground on the levee that will protect the newbo district from most flooding yesterday. that levee will stretch from south of the sinclair site

eliminate the need for many of the hesco barriers that helped protect the area from last month's flood. cedar rapids mayor ron corbett says this project is just the start. " it's a great starting point, it's the lowest area of town and when we finish this, we'll move over and protect czech village " the city says the levee will hold back water of a cedar river level of up to 20 feet -- the flooding last month reached 22 feet. it expects it to be completed by the end of next year. but the city is still short the full flood protection plan. the cedar rapids city council is looking at paying millions of dollars for flood protection on the city's west side. the council agreed to ask for bids for moving underground utilities that are near the river in czech village. the city believes the work could cost $4 million dollars, and it would prepare the area for a permanent flood berm. plans call for opening the bids in november. there's no timetable yet on when work would start on building the berm. iowa's two senators want to know why cedar rapids isn't

other cities when it comes to federal money for permanent flood protection. senators chuck grassley and joni ernst have sent a letter to the u.s. army corps of engineers, asking why the city ranks low on a funding list for flood projects. they say the formula the corps uses is flawed because it doesn't give enough consideration to public safety. the senators also argued the city spent about $6 million dollars for only temporary flood protection last month. and that could add up, funding for the cedar rapids flood protection plan, but the corps of engineers has never included that funding in its budget requests. there are a couple of events planned for the newbo district after last month's flood. one is this friday, from 5 to 9. the newbo celebration is at the city market with music, food and drinks. the second event is party on the nobo side, and it goes all day saturday. "nobo" refers to the part of newbo where floodwaters reached -- south of 16th avenue se. tornado's grub and pub organized the event as a way to raise money for the

the temporary levees. a partnership between cedar rapids police and adcraft printing are helping those battling homelessness find food and shelter. kcrg-tv9's samantha myers reports on how a simple card is providing assistance. cards like this one are helping homeless find food, shelter and other services in the cedar rapids area. adcraft printing volunteered to print the cards for free. cedar rapids police officers carry the cards around with them and in the area. adcraft says it initially printed 10,000 cards two months ago, but printed 10,000 more when they ran out. police officers say about half of the people they give the cards to are appreciative. ,' 07:03:37;22 it doesn't help the community so much, it helps the person that we give them to. so it gives them resources for medical care, food and shelter, homeless shelter information, some of those phone numbers that are critical. shower information, some of those things. the basic human needs. to homeless people makes more of an impact than just donating money, she also says the cards will help people find warm shelter as it gets colder. in cedar rapids samantha myer kcrg tv9 news. the iowa state patrol is looking for a man for a stabbing this year at the iowa state fair. the search is for 21-year- old craig hunt on an arrest warrant for attempted murder. the patrol believes he's in the des moines area to be armed and dangerous. the state patrol says hunt stabbed another man twice at the iowa state fairgrounds on august 21st. since then the victim has recovered. after interviewing witnesses, the patrol identified hunt as the suspect in the stabbing. authorities are also investigating him for several shootings in the area. a waterloo girl is going to be okay after an s-u-v hit her outside a school on the city's east side. waterloo police say it happened on idaho street across
