western crew saiders. u.s. and britain said there's little desire for civil war, and instead, they want more sanctions against russia. the european union meets this week to keep up the pressure on russia. well, emotions high as some nigerian schoolgirls were reunited with parents after spending two years as hostages. 21 girls were released from boko families on sunday. there were the first girls released after negotiations between the group and nigeria oo's government, but nearly 200 are still captive. police in alaska asked for the public's help for finding a suspect accused of shooting an officer. from the officer's car, it shows the suspect walking down the sidewalk and then crossing to the officer's side of the car. another video shows the alleged gunman walking away from the

abandon it blocks away after shooting the officer who was seriously injured. mourners gathered to pay respects for four people killed in an accident. it took place saturday when a pickup truck plunged off the bridge falling into the middle of a festival. here's the details. >> the driver of this demolished pickup truck, a member of the u.s. navy charged with four counts of vehicular homicide and dui. >> sounded like gunfire, and seen the vehicle come down. >> vehicle on its side. it's going to roll back over. >> the cell phone video shows chaos and panic in a crowded fair in san diego after that truck flew off a bridge and plunged 60 feet on to a vendor in a packed motorcycle festival. >> when they arrived, they did find the vehicle on its side, and on top of four individuals.

nine injured. authorities say the driver, 24-year-old richard anthony seen here treated at the scene was under the influence when he lost control. >> there's no other thought that, you know, but what's going -- what you see is somebody's got tbe dead. >> reporter: he survived the crash and is in the hospital with serious injuries. he is not yet entered a plea. this crash could have been even worse. the truck came to a stop just feet from a stage where a band was playing. no w doing. eva pilgrim, abc news, new york. as expected, san francisco quarterback, colin kaepernick continued protests of the national anthem before the team's game in buffalo. kaepernick and two teammates knelt down prompting boos from buffalo fans. kneels is kaepernick's protest against police brutality. kaepernick questioned why the actions are questioned by some as unpatriotic.

average. cubs and dodgers are in the running, and those are some of the top stories on this monday, it is october 17th. from abc news, this is "world news now." good monday morning, everyone. we're starting overseas this half hour in a battle taking place right now. artillery and air strikes by the u.s. led coalition have been softening up iraqi city of mosul as government troops begin to move in. defense secretary ash carter says it could be a decisive moment in the battle against isis. >> the group held the city for more than two years. government forces are moving in from the south and east, and here's more from the front lines. >> reporter: battered humvees and soldiers roll out as iraq announced all-out battle with

prime minister said and the liberation for mosul started. 30,000 troops are backed by u.s. special forces advisers on the ground, and american jets carrying out air strikes. isis has held the city for over two years, and it's digging in to defend its biggest prize, burning oil and tires for cover, digging tums and setting traps for advancing forces. we visited a base looking at the front line, post face-to-face with the enemy. this is the closest to the positions in the area. in fact, there's an isis flag on the next ridge over a mile away. it routinely is under fire. these fighters have lost friends and tell us they are impatient for this battle for mosul to get underway. including this soldier who did not want to be seen for security reasons, leaving a life in canada to fight isis. >> one of the worst
