good thursday morning, everyone. good morning to you. things are shifting into high gear for the presidential candidates barnstorming the critical battleground states. >> new poll numbers out of florida show donald trump with a razor thin two-point lead, a statistical dead heat, but hillary clinton is still ahead in the national polls. trump sat down for an exclusive interview with abc's george decision to briefly veer off the campaign trail. >> and hillary clinton will be joined today by one of her most powerful cheerleaders. we turn now to abc's kenneth moton in d.c. for the latest. kenneth, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, kendis and mara. 12 days to go, and it's all about hitting as many battleground states as possible for the candidates. and if you look at who's been on the trail for hillary clinton, it's obvious she's been trying to get under donald trump's skin. today, donald trump is ohio

white house, believe me. last night he was in north carolina going tit for tat with rival hillary clinton who called him out for taking a break to open his new hotel in d.c. >> she said i used illegal immigrants to build the building, except i didn't use one. >> reporter: clinton spent her 69th birthday in florida where she campaigned with jose andres, the spanish-american chef who pulled out of trump's d.c. hotel because of his comments about mexicans. >> today was a perfect time to have jose be with us. >> reporter: the latest polls have clinton up, but she's not taking anything for granted as millions vote early. >> we cannot stop for a minute. no complacency here. nobody -- nobody flagging. we've got to get everybody out to vote. >> reporter: also on the trail for clinton in virginia, the father of army captain humayun khan, the muslim soldier who was killed in iraq in 2004. trump attacked khan's parents after they spoke at the dnc.

george stephanopoulos for "gma," trump said he had great respect for the khan family but -- >> if i were president at that time, captain khan would be alive today. >> reporter: khizr khan called trump's comments cruel. >> there is no sincerity in those remarks. >> reporter: and senator ted cruz is making headlines this morning raising the possibility of leaving a supreme court vacant seat if hillary clinton wins the election. republicans may block anyone nominated by clinton. so far the gop led senate has refused to even hold hearings for president obama's nominee. kendis and mara. >> and senator john mccain had a similar comment just last week. kenneth moton in d.c., thank you. well, trump is still insisting that he knows more than the country's military experts. >> in that exclusive interview with abc news, trump had tough words for the americans heading up the operation against isis in mosul.

one of the reasons they wanted mosul, they wanted to get the isis leaders who they thought were in mosul. those people have all left. as soon as they heard they're going to be attacked, they left. the resistance -- >> they said 35 of them have been taken out. >> excuse me. the resistance is much greater now because they knew about the attack. why can't they win first and talk later? why do they have to say three months before the attack, we're going in, so you can tell your military expert that i'll sit down and i'll teach him a couple of things. trump referred to had said trump's comments show he doesn't know a thing about military strategy, and the defense secretary tells abc news and abc's "this week" that the fight against isis is going according to plan. now, george will have much more of his exclusive interview and conversation with donald trump, his wife, melania, and his children. that's later on "good morning america" this morning. well, donald trump is stumping for votes in ohio today holding three rallies across the state.

iowa. as we mentioned earlier, hillary clinton is campaigning in north carolina holding her first joint rally with first lady michelle obama, and tim kaine will address supporters at two early voting events in ohio. all across the country there. >> yeah, they are, but we want to turn our attention overseas and daylight is revealing the extent of the earthquake damage in italy. two strong aftershocks struck e central region of the country. an area still reeling from a quake back in august that killed nearly 300 people. no reports of serious injuries or signs of people trapped in rubble. but one man did die of a heart attack apparently brought on by stress. the worst hit town appears to be ussita where the mayor called the damage catastrophic. the quakes were also felt 60 miles away in rome where buildings shook and the foreign ministry was evacuated. turning back now to the u.s., a first taste of winter overnight for people in the great lakes and northeast. you can see the massive system

upstate new york. one to three inches of snow is expected in vermont and new hampshire, and a coating is possible in parts of connecticut and massachusetts. the pentagon has launched air strikes in afghanistan aimed at taking out two of al qaeda's most senior leaders. this morning defense officials are trying to figure out if some of those strikes killed those leaders. the strikes described as the most significant against al qaeda in afghanistan in years. now, one of the targets is farouk al kahtani and was an associate of osama bin laden who planned attacks on u.s. forces in afghanistan. a break for national guard soldiers told to repay thousands of dollars in bonuses. defense secretary ash carter has confirmed that repayment efforts be suspended. the announcement does not end the reimbursement process, but it gives the pentagon and congress a chance to resolve this crisis. well, turning now to sports, the chicago cubs fans are

donald trump's star on the hollywood walk of fame has been destroyed. a man dressed as a construction worker smashed the star with a sledgehammer then tried to pry it out of the sidewalk with a pickax. the man reportedly said he wanted to auction the star and raise money on behalf of the women accusing trump of sexual assault. a southwest pilot -- a skywest pilot rather has been too drunk to fly. russell duszak was taken into custody in the cockpit at the airport in rapid city, south dakota before a flight to salt lake city. police were notified after a tsa agent noticed the smell of alcohol on him. pilots face a stricter standard. a blood alcohol level of just 0.04 is what's considered illegal. to boston now where the morning commute is expected to be back to normal after a scare halted service yesterday

smoke caused by an overheated motor filled the back bay station and some of the cars and you can see panicked passengers there breaking windows in order to get out. there was a similar smoke incident last year and now city officials are demanding the aging system be upgraded. a houston area man is trying to find a tow truck driver who picked up his car but did not take it to the shop. instead that driver took the car on a day-long, high-speed joyride without his permission but what the driver didn't know, the car's dash cam was rolling he got the whole caper on video. the owner says he hopes the video will be enough to press charges once police track down that driver. >> put on a lot of miles on his wheels there. so, listen up. apple is delaying the release of its new airpods. it was thought the wireless earphones designed for iphones might debut today. apple is expected to unveil its new mac line at an event in san francisco. now, reports indicate the tech giant will also reveal a new
