from flood mitigation to the iran nuclear deal, candidates for iowa's first congressiona l district talked tough with less than two weeks until election day. as kcrg-tv9's forrest saunders shows us, republican rod blum and democrat monica vernon made the most of last night's first and only debate - seen on kcrg 9.2 -- trading shots from the start. vernon and blum each fired a few shots at one another from their podiums, wednesday night. claimed blum was playing the blame game in d-c when it came to federal funding for cedar rapids' flood mitigation. "to me, and a lot of other hard working people out here, it just sounds like a lot of finger pointing." blum shot back reminding the audience how long it took for federal dollars to get approval, pointing a finger at vernon. "it took you monica vernon and the city council six years. that's not exactly overnight." later, vernon went after blum's voting record, saying he supported a medicare voucher program and raising the

do those things. i think those are moves that would be very, very destructive." blum said vernon was stretching the truth. that the vote was for a budget bill, which are often full of thousands of ideas, not necessarily policy. "they're not legislation. they're not laws. they are not binding." now on the attack, blum hit vernon on her support of the iran nuclear agreement. he called it was a head scratcher that would allow the middle eastern country to become a nuclear power. vernon called it progress. "it's gotten inspectors in there. there's concrete in the core of that reactor. it's slowed down things." finally, vernon called out blum for his continued support of donald trump. she said blum's endorsement of trump was telling. "this is a guy who has disparaged nearly every ethnic group, every religious group. he's been a sexual predator toward women." blum, turned things around. "he's a crude new york city guy." "i'll say as an aside, most americans agree, hillary clinton is a pathological liar. both of them have personality flaws." polls have shown blum slipping into a dead heat with his opponent. what was once a double digit lead, has dwindled to a one point deficit for the

startegies. they point to trump for blum's slump. in cedar rapids, forrest saunders, kcrg-tv9 news. republican presidential nominee mike pence is campaigning in fort dodge today. the indiana ov central community college at 1:30 p-m. doors open for that event at 11:30. and both presidential candidates will be in cedar rapids on friday. democrat hillary clinton will be at newbo city market at 1:15 p-m.. she will campaign in des moines later that day. and republican donald trump will bring his campaign to the mcgrath amphitheatre. that event begins at 7 p-m on friday. after growing tired of a particular campaign ad, one woman says she is leveling the

billboard she drove past every day in dubuque. so, she raised 600 dollars to buy her own ad on the same digital billboard. parks says the display was up along highway 20 near h & r block for more than a year. she says she doesn't care for trump, but had issues with the lack of representation of other parties. her billboard doesn't mention trump or the clinton campaign. instead it has the word "vote," and lists some words she says describe the values people should consider when cast "those are the values that we really care about as americans, especially as iowans. i think they represent our community more so than some of the rhetoric we've been hearing from the trump campaign and what he's been saying in his message. " parks says the trump campaign has every right to display a billboard whenever and wherever they'd like. but she says she feels there is now more balanced representatio n. tv9 reached out to trump's

comment about the billboard, and didn't hear back. des moines police say they are now following several leads in the shooting that critically injured a 14-year-old boy. this morning, yore jieng is still in hospital after someone shot him in the head. the boy's pastor says this is a time to reach out to young people about stopping violence. every wednesday, jieng attended a youth outreach program at zion lutheran church in des moines. the church's youth pastor says he is on a ventilator and in serious condition after monday night's shooting near incident makes younger people understand the consequences of violence. "i believe it's going to be students like you that get tired of the violence! get tired of going to funerals! how many young people have to die before some of us get a clue that we need to wake up " police say they don't know if jieng was targeted. a decrease in staff is forcing the dubuque county jail to temporarily close its juvenile detention center. according to our coverage

authorities say the training process to transition part-time employees into full-time is taking longer than expected. they hope to reopen in the spring. juvenile offenders will be transferred to facilities in waterloo or des moines. the woman who was involved in a crash with a springville school bus has died, according to an obituary posted online. she was 26-year-old molly zelinskas of dubuque. the linn county sheriff's office says she crashed into the back of the bus on springville on monday afternoon. the bus had stopped to let out a student. a former cedar rapids substitute school teacher is now facing a felony charge for her sexual relationship with a student. mary beth haglin had originally faced a lesser charge of sexual exploitation by a school employee, which was an aggravated misdemeanor. but prosecutors upgraded that to felony sexual exploitation, citing her t-v interviews as evidence for the more serious charge. in those interviews, including one with kcrg t-v9,

at cedar rapids washington high school last school year. most kennedy high school students will be waking up for school soon, in the comfort of their own bed. but tonight, more than 80 students will spend the evening in the cold. the students are doing it to raise money and awareness for the homeless. this is video of a past sleep-out. right now, the cedar rapids school district says about 240 students are homeless. in the past, that number has ranged from 500 to 600 students over a school year. it can sometimes feel almost eat fruits and vegetables. while most kids grow out it, but there is a small chance they may not. that can lead to people who go their whole lives omitting entire food groups from their diet. more extreme cases could even be considered a disorder or an eating anxiety.
