flowers, balloons, and heartfelt messages outside of the urbandale police department. the two officers who died are urbandale police officer justin martin and des moines police sgt. tony beminio. around 1 am yesterday, a man shot and killed officer martin near urbandale high school. just 20 minutes later, a shooter killed took the life of sergeant beminio a few blocks south of merle hay mall. police say this is the man who killed the officers: scott greene, of urbandale. he is 46 years old. the law, including resisting an officer trying to pat him down for a weapon. and threatening to kill another man during a confrontatio n in a parking lot. police now say he targeted officers. possible rifle rounds, there is an officer down ... polk county does confirm an officer down police say greene shot and killed officer martin while martin was in his squad car at 70th and aurora in urbandale. minutes later, and two miles to the southeast, police say greene fired into another squad car, killing

several hours later, police named greene as a suspect. flagging down a d-n-r employee, greene turned himself in on a road in dallas county, west of des moines. investigators took him to a local hospital for treatment. as of this morning, greene appears to still be at the hospital. investigators also began searching greene's urbandale home yesterday. they say a greene had a history of confrontatio ns with police and making racial slurs. family, friends, and co-workers of officer justin martin and sg. sudden loss has stunned them. in urbandale, people came out to pay their respects for officer justin martin. martin's friends were there as he graduated with a degree in criminal justice from simpson college. they say becoming a urbandale police officer was his dream. yesterday, his former professor read an email martin had sent her shortly after graduating. "

eastern iowa -- as a graduate of iowa city west high school before graduating from simpson college. he then went on to work at the indianola police department and then the des moines police department in 2005. "i was always impressed by him. always impressed by how genuine he was, how he treated everybody the same. " friends say beminio was known as a loving father, a proud member of des moines swat team, and spent time as a schoo officer. officer beminio graduated from iowa city west in 1996 before going onto simpson college. kcrg tv9's jordee kalk spoke to his classmates and former teachers, who say his protective instincts as a football player carried over to his life as a police officer. friends knew officer beminio as tony, the gentle giant. iowa city west classmates say they will never forget how beminio led the 1995 football team to state

wymr their time in high school going from a team that was a laughing stock of the conference to a state champion team brad wymer helped coach the team that year. he says the boys learned how to trust each other that year, that's why they went 13 and 0 and won state. wymer says beminio was a key factor in the 1995 team. he also says beminio was an all around good guy. brad wymer 18:20, 'i was a young teacher at the time it was my second third fourth year teaching he was a teenager but when it came down to it he wanted to work hard and do what was right wymer says these skills stayed with beminio throughout hi lessons helped make beminio successful as a cop. in iowa city, jordee kalk, kcrg tv9 news. governor terry branstad talked

during a campaign stop for other republicans in hiawatha. "our thoughts and prayers are with the families of the police officers. so tragic that they were targeted and shot in their own police cars. and uh, we want to do everything we can. and i'm fortunate that the person they suspect did this has already been captured." this was from the hiawatha g-o-p office yesterday... governor branstad campaigned yesterd former new york city mayor rudy giuliani. and president obama also issued his condolences. in a statement, he said, in part, "sergeant anthony beminio and officer justin martin represented our best, most decent instincts as human beings - to serve our neighbors, to put ourselves in harm's way for someone else." iowa is now part of a national uptick in violence against law enforcement. from 2000 to 2015, the "officer down memorial

with yesterday's killings, 5 officers have died in iowa just in 2016.. nationally, 112 officers have died in the line of duty this year, which is already 6% more than all of last year. 48 of those have been by gunfire, which is - by far - the leading cause. some businesses are raising money for the families of the fallen officers. hy-vee says all des moines- area stores will collect donations for the families. and the company will give $25,000 dollars to each officer's family. hurts donuts in coralville is s officers' families. through noon tomorrow, the shop will sell "thin blue line" donuts with all proceeds going to the families. yesterday, people were lined up through the doors to get the donuts. the owner of hurts donuts says he just wanted to give back. 11:50 "we have a business that's about to open up there so were new to that community. we want to show support for that community show our support " hurts donuts sold more than a 1,000 of these thin- blue- line donuts in the first 4 hours yesterday. in a tv-9 follow-up this

daughter has a hearing on request for new trial this morning. 63-year-old robert stern claims his first trial was unfair. his lawyers say prosecutors shouldn't have been allowed to present stern's initial statements to police -- along with some crime scene photos. stern is awaiting sentencing for the death of his daughter, kimberly stern. the cedar rapids community school district is trying to be more active in stopping students from chronically missing school. the state allows 15 absences a semester. but the district doesn't want that's why - after 3 unexcused days a letter - gets sent to parents. at 5, the school starts making phone calls. at 8, officials will go out to homes to check in on the situation. and finally at 15 the family is sent to linn county district court. the district says this is an informal meeting between itself and the family. tonight at 10, hear how the district "holistic student" approach that works to help these families. this is going to be a tough play, and he makes t
