1958. he moved to washington in 1974 to serve in the house before joining the senate in 1980. grassley says he will aim to remain a conservative but independent voice in washington. "we have made him work harder and have made him answer questions from iowans and i'm proud of that " judge told the crowd she tried to call grassley to offer her congratulatio ns. but he made his victory speech before she had a chance. republican rod blum will representing iowa's 1st congressional district for a second term. he beat out democrat monica vernon. blum won yesterday's election with 54% of the vote to vernon's 46%. kcrg-tv9's katie wiedeman talked with the dubuque businessman on how he has his sights set on tightening security on the u-s's southern border. rod blum says he believes he kept his seat because he kept his campaign promises. as blum arrived at the best western for his

that's now synonumous with the 1st congressional district of iowa. blum says he'll continue to stand up to democrats and even his own republican colleagues. he says he'll keep pushing for congressiona l term limits as well as border security. "we need to secure the southern border. isis is coming through the border. illegible drugs are coming across the border. human trafficking is coming across the border. secure the border. " blum thanked his supporters here in in him before everyone else did. in dubuque katie wiedemann kcrg tv-9 news. on the democratic side, monica vernon's supporters rallied around their candidate after her loss. she addressed the crowd shortly after the official results came out. vernon says she called blum and congratulate d him. she also told him she wants to work with him in any way she can. vernon says she's not done working for iowa.

" vernon said she's going to take break before she plans her next step. democrat dave loebsack is returning for a 6th term representing iowa's 2nd congressional district. he defeated republican christopher peters with 54% of the vote, to peters' 46%. kcrg-tv9's jordee kalk spoke with the congressman on his plans in washington d-c. jordee: so another two years in d.c. how are you feeling right now? loebsack: well its not what i was hoping to feel i'm going to remain the only democrat in the iowa federal delegation i will continue to work with folks. i'm going to work on the issues i need to , on economic development, education, broadband. making sure we move this economy forward. keep protecting the middle class.

acceptance speech you really stressed the need to focus on the next presidential election and the next election cycle. what exactly do you mean by this? loebsack: 2018 is coming up in just a couple of years in iowa democrats are going to be thinking long and hard about who we are going to put up for governor who we are going to put up on these races because i believe were on the wrong path. and the governor has done some things that are not good for the state. but i'm confident that democrats can get on the right path again. jordee: what's your goal for the next two years? loebsack: economic recovery, continue the economic recovery more jobs better jobs better paying jobs that's what i'm going to work towards. that's a big source of the angt election and that's how we resolve that issue dr. chris peters has conceded

to loebsack but says his campaign isn't a loss. at a university of iowa college campaign was more successful than others in the past. he says he hopes this election season sparks a change in american politics. "we need to talk about issues, we need to talk to about solutions, we need to do a more thorough manner, we need to behave ourselves in a more civil manner and we need to start getting the special interest groups our of our politics going forward." peters says he is not ruling out the possibility of

in iowa's 3rd district, republican david young is going back for a second term. young won his re- election bid over democrat jim mowrer, grabbing 54% of the vote. mowrer had 40%. republican steve king has been re-elected to an 8th term in the u-s house. he is representing iowa's 4th congressiona l district. king beat democrat kim weaver 61 to 39%. all 4 of iowa's incumbents will return to the house of representatives in washington d.c.. republicans now hold a majority in the state's senate. the iowa senate now holds 30 republicans an open seat up for election in december. the state's g-o-p picked up six seats. that gives the g-o-p control of both legislative chambers and the governor's office. iowa house: gop 55, dems 45. dems pick up 2 seats and in iowa's house, there are now 55 republicans and 45 democrats. iowa democrats picked up 2 seats. in just a bit, we'll break down how counties across iowa voted for election 2016. but right now, here's a look at

and mitigate flooding. some would also pay for improving parks and trails. in a close vote, linn county voters have decided to cut the number of supervisors from 5 to 3. you can see there 51% of the votes picked yes. 10 years ago, voters decided to increase the number from 3 to 5. in marion, people approved a measure to change how to elect their city council members. 79% of voters said yes to the change. right now, the entire city votes on three at- ward members. this change would only have people voting for three at-large spots, plus one member from their own ward. in iowa city, voters approved a measure that would lower the number of signatures needed to bring initiatives in front of the city council. right now, at least 25 percent of the people who voted in the last city election has to sign the document. now that the measure has passed that percentage of signatures needed drops to 10 percent. online shopping is expected to

barack obama won most of the counties in the tv-9 viewing area - not just linn, johnson and dubuque counties. he won northeast iowa... cedar, jackson, jones and other rural counties... kcrg-tv9 talked with university of iowa political science professor cary covington about this election. he says iowa was an ideal state for donald trump to be successful last night. "iowa is really in trump's demographic sweet spot. we have a lot of people with high school e are a very white state. not as many people with college degrees.and those white high school educated voters were the people who turned out for trump. iowa was a good state for him. " we'll have more from dr. covington in our next half hour about how trump helped elect other republicans downballot in iowa.
