community and classrooms. the march was several days after an sudanese- american family found this note outside their home in iowa city. it reads quote "you can go home now" followed by derogatory remarks and hashtag trump. police are investigating the incident as a hate crime. kcrg t-v-nine's jordee kalk reports on the concerns circling iowa city. hundreds in iowa city gathered one week after the presidential election to protest hate and discrimination in their community. through downtown iowa city for about 15 minutes before landing at the pentacrest. there, students, parents and concerned community members joined hand in hand, and chanted for a future that's free of hate and discrimination. iowa city west high school students organized this rally. students say discrimination is not just happening on the streets of their community, but also in school hallways. lujayne hamad29:12, "i felt i was too young as a 15 year old to lose hope in the world but this has made me feel a lot better." jordee:now students hope

the bill also targets schools using taxpayer dollars to fund election-related sit-ins and grief counseling beyond what is normally available to students. " using new tax dollars when tuition rates are skyrocketing is absolutely unacceptable to me. " state representativ e phyllis thede says kaufmann's legislation threatens freedom of speech. ""i don't want to go after somebody because they're fearful or they're upset or they're angry. that's not what legislators do." " universities say they haven't spent any extra money on election- related events. university of northern iowa students and faculty gathered for three sessions to discuss the election and their fears. iowa state university students and faculty held a rally, and university of iowa student groups also held events. the iowa city city council has voted to allow its police department to temporarily "overhire," increasing the diversity of the police force.

uniformed officers working the streets. one officer recently left and another will retire by the end of the year. but police can now hire four officers because three of the next four candidates on the certified list are minorities. kcrg t-v nine's brea love joins us in the studio. brea, a lot of police departments are trying to increase diversity. nicole, police in iowa city say if city council didn't approve the over hiring, iowa city police would have probably lost candidates to and because the city typically needs to hire five or six new officers a year.. officials say it wouldn't cost the city a lot to hirer sooner rather than later. the extra cost will come from temporarily over-staffing. the city will have to find an additional 77-hundred dollars a month for each officer. that's until numbers drop from current officers leaving or retiring. iowa city police say they were lucky to get a number of diverse applicants. "if i wait eight months from now, that won't be the case just because those qualified

go work anywhere they want" " iowa city reserved four training spots at the state law enforcement academy for january. the extra minority officers hired will bring police close to the racial makeup of the entire community. right now, white officers make up slightly more than 92 percent of the iowa city department... and black officers just over three percent. with the new hires, that department's makeup would change to 88 percent white officers and almost eight 2010 census put the black population in the city at just under six percent. and nicole, cedar rapids police are also looking to hire officers for full time positions. you can find more information about qualifications and salary with this story on kcrg dot com. donations are pouring in to buy coffee for police officers in cedar rapids. it's after a woman verbally attacked police and posted her remarks on facebook. nats - we got popo wearing a

whacked. the woman live streamed herself cussing out three officers who were wearing black bands in honor of two officers a gunman killed in des moines this month. the woman's outburst happened at brewhemia in the newbo district. the owners had police kick her out for trespassing. now, customers of brewhemia are donating to a cause called operation "blue"-hemia. the coffee shop's owners say it started with a couple of customers offering to buy officers. the shop has since moved the campaign to go fund me and has raised more than 12- hundred dollars. blue-hemia" in this story on kcrg dot com. casey's general stores is now donating 50- thousand-dollars for two scholarships in memory of the two des moines area police officers killed in a ambush. the scholarships are for simpson college. both sergeant tony beminio and officer justin martin graduated from simpson with criminal justice degrees. faculty members say they hope the donation helps the officers' memory live on. "both of them have been shining examples to our current to turn out as officers who are serving the public, and i think that is probably their greatest legacy. " these are endowed annual scholarships. simpson college will determine the criteria for the recipients. for families with critically ill children, all of their time is focused on that child. today, a group continues to raise money to help parents address other aspects of daily life.
