yesterday afternoon. the pastors read various scriptures dealing with interpretations of the law and service. those at the prayer service say they wanted to show law enforcement they also support law enforcement. ""we're not here to protest were here to have dialogue with them and put some faith and ethics into them so they can make better decisions in their day to day difficult jobs " on friday, a wisconsin- based group, freedom from religion foundation, sent this letter to c-r- event could violate the constitution's guarantee of the separation of church and state. the letter says, quote, "police officers and staff may not be present at religious events in their official capacity and may not appear in uniform." local law enforcement has disputed part of that claim, saying officers can wear uniforms. but they will not be paid if they choose to attend. still, some people says that's not how the event was first advertised. " this officer was driving down the road and he was ambushed by an individual who pointed a gun at him from inside of his car and shot at the police officer's window." injustice. more than a hundred people walked through dubuque yesterday. the mostly white group was protesting police brutality against black people. some said an open dialogue about racial issues in the u-s is a start to addressing the problem. "there's a large percent of white americans that understand that all lives do matter. and right now we're currently concentrating on black lives and that's what the march is for. to recognize that we do understand that all lives matter, but today in america black lives are suffering greatly." others said they were there to protest what they call hateful comments against minorities from president-elect donald trump. the pre-trial conference for a former washington high school substitute teacher is today. mary beth haglin is charged with sexual exploitation. a week from today, she will go to trial in tama county. a cedar rapids judge approved a change of venue. haglin's lawyer says the news coverage of the case would

haglin admitted to having a relationship with a student in several t-v interviews. authorities have since increased her charge to a felony. today, the dubuque community school district is reviewing a book that some parents say contains obscene material. "the perks of being a wallflower" is required reading for students in one class at hempstead high school. the parents say the book's "graphic sex scenes" and depictions of drugs and alcohol use surprised them. tonight during an open meeting, a committee will discuss the use of the book. the forum on 2300 chaney road. five kids face charges for carrying weapons. iowa city police took three dozen reports of damage from b-b guns. police say the juveniles confessed after officers questioned them saturday night. over the past several days, people on the east and southeast parts of town have reported damaged to homes and vehicles. at least one person was shot with a b-b gun. authorities say that person is ok. waterloo investigators say they are going to re-

one was arrested. officials say the 45 year old died earlier this year from complications related to his gunshot wounds. waterloo police say they've now reclassified the case from an assault to a homicide. they also plan to talk with witnesses to identify potential leads. so far, police haven't made any arrests in this case. this friday, the hawkeyes and nebraska cornhuskers will be rivals on the football field. several days before kickoff, fans from the two schools are teaming up for veteran suicide awareness. last year, the university of iowa veterans association spent about a week on a ruck walk, marching 280 miles from minneapolis to iowa city. this year, the group is working with a nebraska veterans student organization to march from lincoln, nebraska to iowa city. that's about 344 miles. more than 200 volunteers will carry the game ball plus 22 pounds of weight to represent the 22 veterans who commit suicide every day.
