and potentially an overflow location available when temperatures drop below freezing. jordee: once it gets freezing the emergency overflow shelters will open all across cedar rapids. those locations are here at willis dady. as well as catholic workers house and mission of hope. anyone can go to these shelters. the shelters promise it will never turn anyone away. guests have to sign up before hand, at way point services. there, the guest will be directed to the appropriate shelter. the shelters say the main know that several dozen may stay outside that may be under a bridge it may be in someone's garage if they're able to make friend, in car in a lot of places we call not made for human habitaition." jordee: now this year the overflow shelters are open every night its below freezing. this is different rom last year when the shelters were only open at 15 degrees or lower. this change is made possible through funding by the linn county supervisors. in cedar rapids, jordee kalk, kcrg tv9 news. the shelter house in iowa city

winter shelter. its website still lists it at the t-m-1 building on boyrum street - but that is last year's location. the shelter house says it is close to having a new location for this winter and hopes to announce that soon. the salvation army in cedar rapids plans to feed more than 400 people today. the organization is hs the holiday dinner is at 1000 c avenue northwest in cedar rapids. volunteers will serve food from 11:30 this morning to one this afternoon. anyone in need is welcome. turkey and all the trimmings are also available today in iowa city. the salvation army of johnson county is hosting thanksgiving dinner from four to six tonight. anyone can come to 11-16 south gilbert court in iowa city. if you want your turkey to make it to the table for thanksgiving, you'd better join

that means plenty of festive fixings like stuffing and pie. but besides the traditional dishes, some healthier options can be out there. kcrg-tv nine's brea love joins us. brea, what are some of those healthy options? chris and nicole, for those looking to lose weight this season it can be tough. but, i talked with a hy-vee dietitian about some options families can consider this season. according to the calorie control council the average american consumes about 45 by substituting some meals like making something like this a mixed greens & pear salad in substitute to a more fattening dish could be an option. or making pan roasted vegetables instead of mashed potatoes. dietitian nicole johnson says there a few things to remember while enjoying the feast. "11:40it's not going to make or break you diet, you just don't want it to become a habit. most people need about 2,000 calories a day so you're consuming double of what you need in a day. again, it's just

forward. for the fifth year, kcrg-tv9 and the heritage agency on aging are teaming up to "fill the plate." the annual telethon provides funding for meals to older adults throughout eastern iowa. heritage is already accepting donations. you can also join us tuesday during any of our t-v nine newscasts to participate. in a tv-9 follow-up this morning.. a plea deal for trying to abduct and sexually assault a girl who was walking home from school. robert robbins pleaded guilty to enticing a minor under the age of 13 for sexual abuse or exploitation. he originally faced 3rd degree kidnapping. robbins grabbed an 11 year old girl in march of 2015. police say robbins forced the girl to go behind a house. they say he admitted planning to sexually abuse her. but the girl was able to escape. a man from des moines faces charges this morning for a chase and crash that sent

a trooper tried to pull over 20-year-old jeffrey rangle junior on i-80 yesterday morning. that's when troopers say he sped away. that started a chase that led into and out of solon on highway one. the patrol says rangle crashed the car in the 57 hundred block of 160th street around 10:30. the young girl was also in the car. first responders took her to the university of iowa hospital and clinics. troopers did not release her condition or age. rangle wasn't hurt. the national transportation safety board are trying to figure out what caused the deadly school bus crash in tennessee. police say the bus driver was speeding with more than 30 students on board when he lost control. the crash killed 5 elementary-school age children. several others are in critical condition. the bus driver, 24- year- old johnthony walker, is in custody today and facing multiple charges. memorials have appeared near the scene of monday's crash. "just a terrible incident, it was very close to home, we just

precious it's really precious" " public records reveal this is the second bus crash in 2 months walker was involved in. a des moines school is testing seat belts that could save lives in case of a bus crash. a middle school in des moines is trying out three-point belts on some of its buses. those are the same seat belts used in cars. only six states mandate seat belts on large buses. officials say they've already started seeing benefits. "if that means seat belts prevent an accident that's huge. what we're seeing so far in first couple of weeks of our test, is that drivers have a better drive and are less likely to be in an accident." " officials say the seat belts help drivers keep their eyes on the road, and not on the students behind them. dozens of children in des moines have new families to be thankful for this thanksgiving. and the judge presiding over their cases is giving the children something to remember

the dash for dashiell is a two-mile run and walk fundraiser tonight at 6 at the north ridge pavilion. it's also a celebration of dashiell codd's birthday. he died after battling a rare pediatric liver cancer. the money raised will go toward the university of iowa children's hospital and the university of iowa dance marathon. adoption day is always a special moment for families across iowa, as courts grant custody of children to new families. but it's not just the families who are excited for the day. last satua of 70 children. and as part of the celebration, some of the children received some special gifts. judge robert blink made all of them by hand. he works hard -- creating the toys in his basement. "it takes a toll on the judge so you need something that kind of refreshes your soul.
